Sadly, the problem with ALL other media boxes has been audio passthrough support for Plex. The shield is still the only thing that does it. Google could have crushed the market if they had done it.

HDMI 2.1 port does nothing for a streaming device. The shield can do Dolby Vision at 4k 60 which is more than enough. Only thing I would really want is HDR from KZbin on Shield.

Instead of dropping a proper streamer for enthusiasts as well as non techy consumers with a Tensor G2 processor they gave us a nest hub with streaming as an afterthought. I really want to buy a shield pro especially for emulation but I beard its glitchy. I will stay with the Onn 4k Pro for $50. Maybe Walmart will make a Ultimate version. 😊

I have the Chromecast for Google TV where I live (3 of them) and I would consider upgrading. I agree with your thoughts about the two. For me, the Shield is better in some ways but it cost's $195. The Google Streamer is $99 and has the upgraded interface and an extra gig of RAM. For my casual watching (I don't game) it's more than fine for me. I am also intrigued about Walmart's Onn Google TV 4k box. I'd love to see a comparison between that and these two that you just posted the video about.

The Shield Pro has turned into a rather buggy device for me. The past 4 years have been great with it, but I can recount the last 8 months I keep running into random freezing, apps failing to play videos, youtube having weird display errors, and constant reinstalling of some apps to fix random issues. The Google Tv not having a backlit remote is why I chose the Fire TV cube + Fire Pro Remote that is backlit.

The Shield’s longevity is as much to do with no one making a viable mainstream alternative as anything else. All Google or Apple would have to do is enable lossless audio passthrough on their devices and the Shield would basically die overnight. As it is an Apple TV for general streaming and a Shield for local content is still the way to go as far as mainstream boxes but there’s a healthy appetite among the enthusiast market for a no compromises, do it all in one box and they’d pay good money for it!

I had the Shield Pro 2017 which I used until Jan 2024 which became very laggy along with the lack of updates turned it into a brick. I then used a Fire TV Cube 2nd generation until yesterday when I bought the Google TV Streamer. Obviously not as good as a Shield, but miles better than the Fire TV Cube. I use it for sideloading apps from abroad rather than use it as my main streaming device as I have Sky Stream for the UK apps.

I feel like tvs today already come with capabilities similar to what the Google TV streamer offers. The Sheild offers a far better performance, gaming, and AI upscaling, but the Google TV streamer brings nothing new comparing to what my LG TV already does natively with WebOS. The chromecast with Google TV seems like a better option than the Google TV streamer in general.

The chip is still one of the strongest on the market. Twice as good as the new Google TV Streamer shown in the video. And yes I believe it's the only one with 4K upscaling or at least the only one to do it as well as they do it.

I tried both streamers. I was needing a streamer that could stream my playlist from Tidal to my Sonos stereo\theater setup without buffering and just downright arresting the stream. Playback would just pause for minutes at a time with my Chromecast. Unfortunately, i had the same exact result with the Google streamer. But, when i added the Nvidia shield pro, the stream from my mobile device never stuttered. The shield with AI enhancement is sort of mind blowing! It handles regular KZbin TV without a glitch. Voice sync to picture issues are gone! Shield made cord cutting an absolute delight and KZbin TV works like a dream! I can't speak on every streaming device out there, but the Shield Pro made me completely forget about a cable box!

It’s really sad that no manufacture has chosen, and I say has chosen because they could have made a device more powerful than the Nvidia Shield Amazon had a chance to do it when they brought out the new Amazon Fire TV cube three and they didn’t do it. For me the best device and Amazon had got discontinued pretty quick. It was the Amazon Fire TV box. It was a box such as any android box it just said on your table top or whatever at the time it probably was ahead of a lot other devices, but it could only do 4K at 30 frames per second. No HDR or anything, but they could have improved on it. As far as Google they could have and should have made the Google TV streamer as powerful or more powerful than the Nvidia Shield but once again they took the shortcut and did not. It’s not that nobody can make a more powerful device. Nobody chooses to make a more powerful device to date as far as devices that are licensed I would say the Amazon fire TV cube third generation is the closest in power to the Nvidia Shield .

I believe the google streamer does not support audio passthrough, so when you connect it the your avr 1st then from avr to your tv you will not get surround sound. Where as the Shield will. Does anyone know if this is correct?

The Shield is the better performer whereas roku is a bit clunky to navigate. If you can tolerate Google being up in your business then go for it. Then again Roku pulls some shady stuff too sometimes.

Shield still wins. It is still the best even though it is getting a little creaky. The Streamer is a step in the right direction but it still falls short. I was sold on the AI upscaling of the Shield; by no means is it perfect, but it is still impressive, and I won't be replacing my unit until something similar is offered. Like Logitech's Harmony remotes, I fear there just won't be a viable successor to the Shield for a very long time (if ever; our demands are perhaps just too niche), unless nVidia decide to produce a Shield 2 given the Switch 2's release next year. I doubt it though. So, until my Shield dies completely or someone, somewhere, releases something better, I just won't consider anything else.

Lack of proper options in Google's market is such a tragedy. One good device was made in 2019, Another on by Apple some years ago. the new UI is snappy and the 4K interface over the 1080p upscale to 4k interface on the Shield is appreciated, but it just doesn't have the performance where I need it. I ordered one in hopes that it could replace my Shield TV Pro for local game streaming over Sunshine and Moonlight, but the performance for that was abysmal. literally unplayable.

When we say a tv streamer, it should only be about best video and audio, not like nest or door cam and what not useless things. Google tv streamer cannot compete with a almost 10 year old Nvedia which supports DTS or 7 years old apple tv which supports more audio codecs. I have an apple tv which is the only device of apple I have, which supports more audio codecs and so I do not wish to replace it with Google tv as it cannot even compete with it. Dont know what they were thinking designing it, google cannot match with a 9 year old hardware and software of Nvedia, what a shame.

Look into the firetv cube. I believe you can connect an external hard drive to it. That way you keep the interface the same as the firestock so the change will be invisible for the family
