As an IT Exec at a major global company, I personally made the switch to an iPad Pro M1 11” with the Brydge Keyboard then switched to an Apple Magic Keyboard. Day 1 - iOS 16 w/ stage manager made the switch possible. Don’t think I could’ve done it using normal app switching. 400 days later, I’m on iOS 17 and using Azure Remote Desktop for a few apps (ie Excel Pivots, Data manipulation options, etc. ). I’m using a wide angle Dell monitor with native USB-C and USB-A charging. Once the remote Logitech camera is supported, it’ll be a professional laptop replacement game changer. Would be nice if the computer continued to run whilst closed. I’ll never go back to 100% PC - in fact, I’m working on moving our company to mixed iPad / thin client VDI mode to have the greatest agility. Big thanks to this channel for helping convince me to make the switch - it’s been an amazing experience that has made my worklife beyond productive.

I got my 2018 iPad Pro back in May 2019, just before I started college. At first I used it a lot as my main computer, and I enjoyed it a lot. However, as my needs for a computer changed to become more demanding, the limitations of iPadOS began to bother me. To make things worse for the iPad Pro, the iPhone and Mac improved quite a lot over the past four years in both hardware and software. As a result, I use my iPad less and less, especially after going into content creation and graduated college. Overall, the iPad Pro for me is a great device. But it just hasn't improved fast enough for me to keep up with my changing demands for a computer while the Mac and iPhone did. I still have my iPad Pro, but only for when I need to occasionally doodle something which is rather rare because I'm not much of a drawer, even though it is something I'd like to learn.

I bought an M1 iPad Pro back when they came out. Got the Apple Pencil and a folio case to go with it. I'm in my 40s and thought about how much I missed drawing back in my school days. Ended up getting Procreate and a few other apps, but honestly, I'm too overwhelmed to dive into them. So many brush options. I used to be a pencil and paper drawer. Jumping into the digital art world is very intimidating, but I still want to do it. Just having a hard time actually trying to do it. So instead, I use my iPad as a big iPhone, basically. I much rather watch videos on it, rather than my phone, if not my 2014 MacBook Pro, which I should have replaced instead of buying the iPad. The MacBook though is for my work. Lots of spreadsheets, Slack, Zoom, and websites. Thought about trying to use the iPad for work instead of the MacBook, but I multitask so much with the MacBook + a 2nd display, I don't think I could make the iPad my go-to for work.

Like you said, the hardware is just perfect. My iPad Pro 12” M2 1TB SSD is doing great. But… iPadOS is just so limiting. As a developer, I really, really, would love to use my iPad as my main computer. But Apple makes it so hard to love this device. The reason for purchasing my iPad Pro M2 was it to be my main computer. But until this day after a year and a lot of retries to like it again, I would not buy it again. I would go for a Macbook. I mostly use my iPad Pro to watch video’s, my email and writing documents by hand or by keyboard. But at the price I paid for this device and Apple keeps limiting it via iPadOS, it is too much and too high. And the price, for the Magic Keyboard which is a great piece of hardware but with _no_ function keys, is also completely insane. Period. For that price alone I bought a Logitech MX Keys Mini, a Magic Trackpad and a solid metal magnetic stand.

Have watched a lot of your "iPad Pro as laptop replacement" videos (and many others), and I have tried hard, really hard to get any normal workflow on the iPad as my main driver. But I can only see this work if you are a student or a person that doesn't need a laptop for normal web-based content management systems or workflows that uses docs and files for which you need "preview" by pressing the spacebar on the mac. Content creators who write scripts, edit photos and videos and use the device as a media consumption device can supposedly get everything done on an iPad. But, even though I am by no means a serious heavy user who needs coding or working with heavy spreadsheets, I work mainly on websites that I own from a management POV, so I rely fully on a web browser where I have generally 20+ tabs open (chrome on the mac), email with 10+ email accounts and allot of meeting apps such as Whatsapp, Zoom, Slack etc (Whatsapp sucks in the web browser). The main thing I don't understand is how people are using the iPad even with only the limited web browser capabilities. Chrome on the iPad totally sucks, it's way slower than on a macbook and doesn't support 50% of the features but also Safari doesn't load the admin portals that I need to work in. All in all, I wish Apple made the iPad run a version of MacOSx because until then it will still be only a light media consumption device.

The fact that the 12.9" base line, with the Magic Keyboard and the Apple Pencil, is short of 2100 in Italy means it absolutely makes ZERO sense whatsoever buying one if you are not loaded or an artist. I own an 11" M1 Pro with those two accessories and it is a beauty, but it's not a computer and it will never be, it's just too small. The 12.9", on the other hand, could replace a laptop if it were, say, 500 euros cheaper (more like the US price). I don't regret buying the iPad, nor the Pencil, but I do regret investing in the Magic Keyboard and trying to use the iPad as my sole device. I ended up buying and M1 air a few months later and I'm getting a MacBook Pro at the end of this year. Btw, the fun fact is I'm a damn student, I'm literally the target for that device, and it is absolutely insane how inaccessible it is. For 2k I can get a MacBook Pro refurbished or just upgrade to a new one for a little bit of money, like 15% increase in price. That price tag is okay in the US because you have an education system built around debt, so you can easily invest that kind of money if you are confident enough you will be able to pay back you tuition (I think is't called, not sure tho). In EU you either come from a rich family or you just can't afford an iPad Pro. I had two jobs for a year to be able to buy myself the 11" and the full combo was like 1.5k. Let's be real, iPads are only good for students (and a very small group of grown-ups that don't even make a market altogether) and students can't afford them... recommending an iPad Pro 12.9" is cool, I mean if I had one I'd be mad in love with it, but you have to be realistic guys... it's one of the worst value for money there is in the tech world by a mile, or at least it is outside the cozy bubble Apple keeps alive around the US.

🐬 Really awesome to see your perspective on this. I appreciate hearing about this from someone who has real experience with it, rather than someone who just switches for a week. It’s definitely one of those “it depends” answers when it comes to whether someone can use it as a full time machine. I love my 2020 iPad Pro, but I’m also an accounting major so certain apps aren’t quite there for me to switch. An app like Excel doesn’t have the capabilities for when I’m using things like power query or anything other than basic formulas. But that doesn’t mean i don’t LOVE my iPad, cause I really do. This is the ultimate secondary device for my MacBook. It allows me to work anywhere with two screens. Even universal control can be amazing when I’m using GoodNotes on my iPad while going through assignments on my laptop. I’d say that from a student perspective to be cautious to recommend students an iPad as their full time machine. While my initial major (marketing) would have worked with an iPad, my current one won’t. I think getting something like an MacBook Air is the best flexible option when there’s so much uncertainty. And then, if you’re able to, grab a refurbished iPad Air as a fantastic secondary option.

I very much prefer the iPad Pro for day to day use not only for the fluidity of the tablet but also the touch screen operating system. The combination of the SIM card for internet access and phone, near computer capability, the touch screen and the iPadOS App Store is worth the premium price of the Ipad vs a MacBook. I choose to use less expensive peripherals rather than apple products and find them adequate without the extra expense. The ability to use cellular data anywhere I go instead of depending on Wi-Fi is a huge advantage as well. I use T Mobile Digits which also allows me to use the tablet to receive and send calls and texts seamlessly (even to people who don’t have iPhones). My iPad is a combination 12.9” computer/iPhone. I use a messenger bag and heavy duty case with a handle to carry the tablet everywhere I go. As an older person with less than perfect eyesight the tablet is used 95% of the time the phone 4% and a computer as needed.

In my use case, I check transit times via the Transit app and look up directions in Google and Apple Maps without having to retrieve my phone while commuting via public transit and doing work on my iPad. I have also used my iPad for GPS while driving when I rented a van. It was a nice experience. I can also receive notifications on my iPad at any point of the day, which means I can choose which notifications to appear on my iPhone and which ones to appear on my iPad. Another plus. Using my phone to hotspot has proven to be annoying for me. I’m not always accessing data when working on my iPad. So, if there is no activity detected, the iPhone will timeout and disconnect the hotspot. The amount of times I have had to reconnect my iPad to my iPhone, because I took too long to use internet data, has had me vow to never buy a WiFi only iPad again for as long as I intend to work with it out of the house. It’s so much easier to use a cellular iPad. No need to worry about finding a place with public WiFi, either. I went to my favourite cafe one time when their internet was down. Didn’t even realize that happened until I saw they had a sign saying it’ll be back up the next day.

I use my iPad Pro for everything except when I’m working with exchange admin. Office products are still janky, but the work around is the online versions of those apps. iPadOS 17 will help. I have an old dell xps for when I absolutely cannot use my iPad.

Yea I find my sysadmin stuff for O365 and some linux administration suffers when using the iPad pro. I can usually just RDP to a VM to get something done, but that isn't the best experience either (especially OOB interfaces like DRAC and ILO). I enjoy using for communication and calls\meetings though.

Im sure youve heard this before or similar but I think if the iPad functioned as just that in “tablet mode” and then when connected to the magic keyboard it turned more into a MacOS experience as in a full blown file system, having a REAL desktop and the option to download real full blown computer programs. Something kinda like Samsungs DexOS on their phones/tablets. IDK man to mean its a no brainer because this then can truly replace the laptop for most people.

I still feel like the 12.9 model isn’t really a device you hold while using. I had a 2018 12.9 12z and never got comfortable with the size for a portable device. Fast forward to today I have an 11 inch iPad Pro with 2 TB storage and 16 gigs of ram and I think it’s the perfect size. I can hold it with one hand easily without fatigue and it also works well with the keyboard. The only things I want changed is the position of the camera, and to get an OLED screen as I prefer that to even mini LED on the 12.9.

My M1 Air 5 plugged into an external monitor has been a game changer. External mouse+keyboard too. The only thing that’s annoying is that if I’m watching a movie or episodes and won’t need the iPad’s screen, I can’t turn the screen off like a clam-shell laptop. I have the keep the iPad screen on no matter what to keep my monitor’s screen displaying iPadOS. Potentially leading to screen burn-in. Display tech has improved compared to decade ago but the chances of screen burn-in is never 0% 👀

I've tried using it as my main computer for years now, but I've given up. Multitasking to this day is still bad. You can't export a video in the background, it just stops. I've tried multiple mice and scrolling is not great if they're not from Apple, also sometimes my cursor would just disappear. MS Office is a kid's version on iPad OS, not useful to anyone who really works with it. Sometimes apps are lacking features available on the web but when you try to use the web version it redirects you to the app and there's not much you can do about it. In some case using incognito mode solves it, but for Apple TV for example, it's impossible to load the web version on the iPad unless you use a third party browser. And if you're wondering why I want the web version, it's cause the Apple TV app displays content in really low brightness even when it's all the way up. On the web it's fine. Also, the battery is not as good as a Mac.

I moved to an 11’ iPad Pro from 2020 when the newer form factor came out. I was super excited cause I had a way outdated desktop and a laptop from 2007 so I needed a refresh. I was bummed when just a few months after I invested heavily into the 2020 ipad then the newer M1 came out and a thicker Smart Folio case so I was pasted by return, but over all it has done an amazing job for about 2.5 years then I had some more complicated work where I had to get a M1 MacBook Air. I STILL use the iPad MORE than my laptop some days. I would love to upgrade but not unless something comes out that convinces me to upgrade. USB-C and the functionary its a great primary device.

I got an 11 inch M2 cellular model for school. I know it's overkill but I'm the type of person to use something till it's last breath. So far it's quite useful for classes and other things. I have a windows laptop and android phone, so I use a USB c thumb drive to transfer files from between the devices. And it works well. The ipad gives me enough performance to finish my work. I have to admit that part of the reason why I got it instead of the air was the 120hz display. I'm waiting for the ipados 17 stage manager update so I can use the ipad just like a computer.

yeah same for me. My iPad mini 4 and iPad 7 lasted long enough for me to trust iPads over android tablets even though I have an android phone. I feel like with the M2 and 120hz it could last 5+ years. I only use it for note-taking and entertainment stuff but the jump from iPad 7 to iPad Pro is very huge.

Great video. I’m working now with Apple ecosystem and ipad only. Never regret it. My work is complex and difficult and I don’t need windows mess and time killers like notion. Lack of notifications and overcomplication of simple tasks pushed me away from the Macbook. I have a Macstudio for the tasks I cannot do on ipad but I do that in the evening and I’m astonished every day how few they are.

I have not used an iPad since 2014. I stopped using it because it was to cumbersome to try and have it as my daily driver. Now that ten years has passed and the os has changed a lot since I last used it I am looking forward to getting my iPad delivered to me this week to make the transition to having a iPad as a main computer. I went through cheap route of the iPad 10th gen to ease into it. I have a M1 MBA as my main computer for photo editing so we will see how it goes.

The biggest addition for me was getting a 1 TB external hard drive where I backup my large files and pictures off and on

My fingers are crossed for the rumored updated version of the next iPad Pro. I have an M1 12.9” inch pro, and I use it for everything from content consumption, digital artwork, and video editing. I don’t have a computer, and use my ps5 for gaming. For my use case it is 90% of the way there. Just a slightly larger display. The only time it feels a little cramped is when digital painting in Split View, and having a reference photo in procreate. The video editing apps I use are Davinci resolve, and Final Cut. Just get some of the weird kinks worked out with the files, and some weird stuff in resolve and Final Cut, and it will be the perfect device for me. I already don’t feel the need to ever go back to getting an actual Mac or laptop. Here’s hoping that the next one is everything I hope it to be. Thanks for the great videos and reviews.

iPad is seriously great because u make comics on the side so using it for a drawing tablet is easy (especially when getting a good screen) and I can also do school notes, work, and all the in between. Really good with small drawbacks. I do recommend getting a laptop tho so you can use some things that iPads can’t do.

Very interesting video. I switch between Mac OS on a Mac and a MacBook Pro and my iPad Pro M1. Therein lies the problem. I have to remember too many ‘workarounds’ using the iPad compared with what I can do at great speed on OS. Finder v File Manager is the biggest drawback as you have aluded to. In saying that the lightning fast response of the iPad M1 makes it an absolute joy to use. I really want to switch to the iPad Pro completely and that is a lot to to with the 2nd Generation Apple Pencil. Solution - I need a divorce from Mac OS and concentrate on workflow improvements until Apple make the next steps. Btw I am reliably informed that iOS is significantly more secure than Mac OS? - Is that true?

Great video. Yeah I have a M1 iPad Air and tbh, honestly what’s so important that a regular person can’t do on a iPad that they would on a Mac. I’m in college, anything with the web browser works amazing, it’s fast, tons of useful apps, great pencil options, it can literally emulate your laptop, phone, and notebook all in one. I don’t even use the Magic Keyboard (I think it’s a gimmick) and I still get a very good faux laptop experience. Get a Logitech k380, get a good case that you like, a mouse, a $30 Apple Pencil off of Amazon, and a paper feel screen protector and your all set.

Lightroom Classic and something like Backblaze, or Backblaze itself, for actual, versioned, robust data backup. Those two things and I’d move tomorrow. Everything else I think I could work around, though I do use an Epson V600 for some side projects. Doubt that’s compatible with anything on the iPad.

My laptop has been collecting dust ever since I got my iPad Pro 11" paired with a Logitech Combo Touch. I use it to take notes, edit photos and videos, watch videos, take video calls on Zoom, make documents using Word and Excel, and also when I play games, I can easily remove the keyboard or rotate it on the back of my iPad while my iPad is still protected by the case.

I had the dream to replace a MacBook with an iPad cause i like to have a convertible setup like for consuming KZbin, Netflix etc an iPad is a great device especially on the go. That’s why i ordered the iPad Pro back in 2018. To be able to get the work done, i got the Magic Keyboard as well. A few years and WWDC with iPadOS updates later, it has improved a lot but i think it is still a way of workarounds. The file management at first, goes along with pro apps usage like Photoshop, LR, FCPX but still working on office stuff (copy, pasting, working on sheets or presentations) it is not as simple as on Mac. I am tired of using workarounds so i started using my Mac more often what wasn’t my real intention. I still want to get rid of a MacBook but i don’t want to go the extra steps only because its an iPad.

I think you pretty much nailed it towards the end. You can pay an awful lot for an iPad Pro setup with keyboard and trackpad that JUST ABOUT suffices as a computer, or pay half that for a full-day Mac. It’s a really tough sell, but I suppose that Apple’s answer to that is now the iPad Air, which like the MacBook Air does basically everything that its Pro sibling does, just not quite as well.

Thank you for this. I put a lil too much pressure on my new MacBook’s screen opening it up, and now have to pay $900 to get it fixed. Don’t have that, so looking to see if refurbished iPad’s can do the trick instead. Just researching to see if I can edit videos with iMovie on the iPad or if I need anything else. Because Zoom calls and editing selftape auditions is all I actually need the laptop for. This was helpful.

The younger generations are being given iPads when they begin the third grade and that’s what they use for their computer all the way through high school. That’s all the kids growing up know how to use, so I can clearly see iPad becoming the main computer for the next generation. Especially if Apple continues to improve it and add more desktop like features to it.

I have a the 12,9 M1 iPad Pro 5G. I enjoy it a versatile travel device. I always have it with me and can leave my work computer at work and my personal laptop at home. I like it for quickly being able to withe emails, sign a contract, sketch up an idea or work in a spreadsheet while one the road and being online without having to tether. It’s not replacing my laptops but somehow it improves my life just enough to justify the steep price point. I am super frustrated with the front facing camera placement thought. 🐬 solo Question, do you ever have an issue transferring a ton of photos or video from a memory card to the iPad and I guess you'd try to transfer to files in the cloud if you don't have a ton of space. I don't have an iPad Pro, mine is about a year and a half old. The 10.9”. I am considering getting a Mac Air but if I could use the iPad that would be cool. Thanks!
