Exactly, this isn't a pimped out street racer! Purely functional and clean design. A stretched Mac Mini that's worked well for some years. Needed some upgradable memory and storage, but that's Apple of old coming back, closing off the design package.

...with stupid Apple incompatibilities that Apple wasted huge amounts of engineering time on just to say f@#$. you Users. It is not performing as promised, on some tasks it is actually slower. Once you add mouse, keyboard, speakers, microphone, camera and display it is not cheap. One user reports it will not start up with 3rd party mouse and keyboard either wirelessly or plugged into the USB ports. WTF? IMHO anyone buying one will see it valueless in a very few short years just like the Mac Pro, iMac Pro and the Trrashintosh.

Yes, Microsoft has auto driver installer, that may help you, by installing wrong (old/obsolete) driver, that may somehow work, but it is not a solution. WOW was my response when I set my Mac studio up today. I was about pull the trigger on a M1 Mac Mini 16 gig before researching the Mac Studio. Of all places I ordered online at Costco, which gives that extra warranty built into the purchase. I have always purchased from the Apple Store, but none of the stores around had inventory. I ordered it on Monday and It arrived today! Coming from a maxed out 2012 Mac Pro 5, 1 and Retina 5k 27 imac this base model Mac Studio checked all my boxes. The speed and ports alone just blew me away. The joy of editing has returned as the Mac Studio just ate Final Cut Pro for breakfast. I have also the M1 Macbook 13" for reference, but I have always been more of desktop consumer. I am was so used to my loud Mac Pro, but this little machine is whisper quiet in comparison. Maybe I am off base, but I actually really like the industrial design and feel of this Mac. As an audio nerd the built in speaker is not a deal breaker at all. I just plug in my dedicated desk speakers/receiver to the headphone port in the back and my ears were happy. The sound was better for me, so I need to research why that is because I wasn't expecting that. Did I mention all these ports were gold for me, including that front SD card slot. Such a simple concept, but It is a winning design to simply put your SD card in the front. I have every port accounted for this beast including my external 4k Blu-ray burner that feeds into 80 TB Plex server. I know this product had a lot of bashing, but hats off to the engineers for designing a product for a long time Mac desktop user that checks every box for me. From my old bluetooth issues and an aging Intel CPU experience I fell in love with this Mac today! It was flawless in both the setup and performance. No more headphones disconnecting so far or other bluetooth devices! For 2K you get a ton of value especially if you are not already in the M1 product line. If you already have an M1 Mac as a daily driver I would wait to see what is around the corner with the M2 chips coming out. I tend to keep my Mac's for a very long time, so I feel confident about this purchase lasting a long time. I pulled out the 2009 Mac Mini for a little photo shoot today for nostalgic purpose and I just had to laugh how far Apple has come. Hey that bad boy had 5 USB ports, so they were doing something right back in those days and I could upgrade the ram to 8 Gigs haha! I hope others give this studio a try if you are in the market for a desktop solution.

It’s not just video editing, it’s also people who want to run virtual machines, game occasionally, use windows in Parallels or Linux in a virtual machine. Really if you upgrade the m1 mini or the iMac or a MacBook then you are almost at the price of this base model studio. Not to mention the other m1 machines top of at 16GB Ram and you only get one added monitor for laptops or iMac, and two total displays for the mini. Honestly it just a better value once you start upgrading ssd and ram on the other models. Just a few hundred more and you get a machine you can use for years and years with no issues. It’s just a more future proof model.

Miles is one of my favourite reviewers because he doesn't tell us about how the absolute most high spec Mac that most people can't afford is the best thing since sliced bread, but picks more affordable stuff and discusses how it's personally benefitted him. As for the design, I kinda think Apple may have spent ages looking at fancy designs and clever stuff, but could never agree on one that looked better than the rest - so instead settled on purely functional. I bet this design doesn't age badly over the years.

The last part where you talked about RAM is really the ONLY reason to upgrade. M1 bottle necks pretty quick when using illustrator, photoshop, and premiere at the same time with any sort of complexity. And After Effects eats up the RAM in half a second once you start doing RAM previews. Still love my M1 but since switching from my intel Mac mini while my M1 is faster in many ways I’m realizing I need a machine that has at least 64GB RAM in order to run consistently smooth.

I wish that Apple had went with a design that was more of a modern version of the G4 Cube except with an actual fan and a metal shell as opposed to the polycarbonate that was the original G4 Cube. I’ve been dreaming of Apple to bring back the Cube design and while this is close, I feel like they should have given Jony a call and got his input on how he designed the Cube and then incorporated that in the design of the Mac Studio.

@@Hajiroku Yeah I think the mini shines for anything basic, and even irregular heavy tasks like videos and occasionally making music. It just isn’t as good a deal as a base studio due to the ram and ssd size the base mini. But I do think the power consumption and noise level of the mini is impressive for a desktop. Especially if you wanted to use one in a camper or mobile setup with solar. Then the mini would win over the Studio for sure.

I like the small footprint. I tuck mine away in the back corner of my desk behind my second monitor. You can barely see it. I don't care about "stylish". I chuckled at your mention of the lack of fan noise/presence -- could that have something to do with the cooling system which is why the case is so tall? C'mon -- you can't have everything.

My base Mac Studio is arriving tomorrow, and I've been utterly baffled how some people like Miles say its basically silent, while others have said it's the loudest Mac, making more noise than even an Intel iMac or Mac Pro. I bought this to replace my custom PC that, even with $100 of Noctua fans, still would spin up intermittently and ruin audio recordings and the like, so I'm hoping my experience mirrors what's talked about here, otherwise I made a $2000 mistake.

The audio quality isn’t important at all. Also, it would have made the box bigger. It wouldn’t have made any sense to make the speakers great. The Studio Display has great speakers. Or you can use an Audio Interface and external monitors.

@@9to5Mac So there is a significant difference with respect to amount of memory? Base 14 inch MBP is 16 GB memory whereas Base M1 Max Mac Studio is 32 GB, right? How much of the speed difference do you think is attributable to the difference in RAM and how much due to the M1 Ultra itself?

Please help: I was seriously considering getting a Mac Mini but have discovered that its only downfall is a long history of bad Bluetooth issues. So now I am considering a base version of the Mac Studio. Did you experience any Bluetooth issues with your Mini or Studio? Also, when you say "base model" I am curious how much Memory and Storage you chose... (and thank you for the perfectly timed and wonderful video - I appreciate your channel very much).

Would it be an option to just order one, and return it when you do experience Bluetooth issues? I do not own a Mac Studio (yet), but I do have an M1 mini. The small Bluetooth issues I had for a short time were fixed by an early update of MacOS. I think the Bluetooth problems might be overblown. The fact it's being complained about a lot online does not have to mean it's an actual design fault. Wireless technology can be finicky in general. Strangely enough I do have persistent *wired* connection issues though: I've had exactly the same kind of USB problems on all of my four Macs since 2013, and I can only find a hand full of people discussing this online. (The issues being: irregular cutting out of my Apple USB keyboards, third party USB mice and the occasional USB thumb drive. The solution: just put any cheap USB extension or expansion adapter/hub in between - et voilà).

I have had the base model Mac Studio for about two days now and haven’t noticed any issues. It’s a short window to know anything definitive one way or the other, but so far so good. I did see in one of the tear down videos of the Mac Studio that it seems like Apple has completely changed the location of the antennas in the machine and they are also larger. Seems like this was done specifically to address those bluetooth issues with the prior design. I also have an M1 Mac Mini and, while I have experienced the bluetooth issue, the degree to which it’s a problem varies. For the most part it’s perfectly fine and then every once in a while it just drops something and reconnects to it or loses connection while sleeping. It’s annoying but ultimately it’s up to you if that’s worth the difference in price between the machines. If you were considering it, It sounds like you’ve determined that M1 Mini would be enough for your needs but the only thing holding you back is the bluetooth. Personally, I wouldn’t pay the difference between the cost of the two machines just because of the bluetooth issue on the Mini. In my experience it generally isn’t a problem and even if it loses connection it usually reconnects in a second or two.

@@KHefty86 Thank you. That really helps. The bluetooth thing certainly bothers me and I think the Mac Mini is all I need... but as I am trading in a 2015 iMac (Apple quoted $260) and going new, I was thinking it would be wise to invest (squeeze) a little more. The Mac Studio's I/O + 32 GB Memory are major considerations for the future. Plus the Studio has the M1 MAX. Do you see a big difference with that?

@@thomasgarner-actingthestor5695 I think it’s safe to assume that the Studio is a bit more future proof if that’s factoring in to your decision. As far as the difference between them (with the RAM and M1 Max vs M1) it largely depends on what you are doing. For most things, using the Studio feels no different than using the M1 Mini- there’s no discernible difference. It’s really only when you would want to throw really heavy workloads at them that you would see the advantages of the Studio. The M1 Mini is pretty capable, I only bought the base model of that as well (8GB RAM) and you’d really have to push things to see a noticeable difference because the way the SoC handles memory and swap is pretty seamless. If you want to avoid too much swap though I would- in hindsight- recommend getting the 16GB RAM Mini over the 8GB version. I think if you are coming from a 7 year old iMac either choice is going to be a major upgrade for you. I’ve been really impressed so far with all of these machines now that Apple is making their own chips.

If the Mac mini M1 would support two Thunderbolt ports with full speed, non blocking, I would go for it again. Also 32GB would be great. Apple‘s marketshare is about 18%, so they can‘t push 8k to the masses.

I wonder if the design is an attempt to draw both crowds to the machine; the users who enjoyed Jony Ive‘s design aesthetic, and the pro users who want power and ports. If this machine is designed to be middle of the road between Prosumer and pro user… than it would make sense that the design pulls from both ends.
