The base model looks pretty perfect for my "Studio" environment. I got 4 editors on 10gig ethernet hooked to a massive media server for video editing commercials and TV shows. We usually spend about $3000 per computer and keep them for like 6 years. The storage doesn't bother me by more is always better. The only things our machines use internal storage for is fonts, web browser, photoshop, and Resolve.

Yeah, it's great but factor in as long a period of applecare as you can because if the ram, ssd, power supply, gpu or logic board fails, you are looking at a VERY expensive brick.

Yes - I am having the same experiences with my new Base Studio Max also. I softened the $$ with trade in of my Mac Mini M1 and simply plugged this one in and now I am smiling at the power of this beast in a box. I has external storage options in place with the Mac mini - a Hagibis USB hub with 2TB SSD that fits under the Studio perfectly - then a OWC Thunderbolt 4 hub with with drives and Ethernet to my NAS - so the 512GB was not an issue up front. This Studio Max has been perfectly silent and the desktop clean. Love it - I use Resolve and the Affinity Photo/Designer/Publisher which run great. Life is good with the Studio.

In the late 1980s I had a customer who sold his car so he could buy a MacSE/30 and a LaserWriter NT, all well worth it. The ability to silently print documents at both high speed and high quality was a tremendous advantage over infernally noisy dot-matrix and daisy wheel printers or very-expensive-per-page inkjet printers. Those who pay the right price get the rewards.

Gary truly awesome overview / review of Apple's MacStudio (M1 Max)... It was refreshing that you took the time to note indirectly the front I/O differences between M1 Max vs M1 Ultra... Kudos for general performance when running Resolve... Your proactive bit to prevent "sticker shock" was inspired (but whoever said Apple's computers were cheap)! Thank you for great content!!

Upgrading worked for me but I may be the exception, not the rule. I have a 2010 Mac Pro. I took out the standard hard drive and replaced with a solid-state. I took out the included graphics card and installed a sapphire 7970 (or is is 7980? Something like that - huge thing, two fans, barely fits….), added the accelsior from other world computing for a PCIe solid state drive to edit off of. All of those certainly helped to extend the life. I was also able to max out the ram by buying third-party. I do all of this tune allow my computer to run more games, but more importantly to play, edit and render 4K video projects. I hit my limit however when I got the black magic pocket cinema camera 6K pro and wanted to shoot 6K Blackmagic raw. That needs a minimum operating system requirement that my computer is just not allowed to install no matter those other upgrades. Sad sad…. I can’t even view the 6K raw files… :(

That's great you have the technical skill and knowledge to perform those kind of upgrades. I've updated RAM in my PC before, but like I said I just got to the point I don't want to mess with that stuff anymore. At best it seemed to only buy another year or so.

@@timdaugherty7612 I started tinkering in very minor ways with my first Power Mac in the early 2000s. After that I grew a bit of confidence to tinker a bit more, and then a bit more. To the point where I was doing all of this in my 2010 machine. It doesn’t look pretty though, things are all jammed up in there lol. But considering the 2010 machine was working for me as recently as 2021… I have a feeling (or at least I hope) that a 2022 machine can last another 10 years, so long as they DO “make them like they used to.”

If you're looking for a reason to love an integrated SoC, look at the Affinity Photo benchmark (1920 I think). It shows good independent CPU and good GPU scores compared with a 12900K+RTX3090 but now take a look at the combined workload score - WOW! That's Unified Memory Architecture folks (the only benchmark I can see to show it).

I spend days or weeks on editing my videos on DaVinci Resolve and honestly rendering time is the least of my concerns, I don’t mind having it render over night if so needed. How does it behave during editing compared to the M1 mini? Maybe you don’t do enough fusion, color grading and other effects to actually see a difference but it would be nice to get your feedback. Another comment... I am a knowledge worker by day and a prosumer photographer/photo editor on the weekend. I don't have nearly the set of requirements I should have to justify a $2000 computer. But I just had to get one. Buyer's remorse? Not even close. This thing is FAST. I have been blazing though Capture One photo edits. There was always a lag when bringing up a new photo and a small lag when applying an edit. Not huge on the M1 Mac Mini but noticeable. I barely notice any lag now. Not sure if it's the GPU power or the CPU power. Who cares. It's fun is what it is. Everything else I do is almost instantaneous. I feel like I did when I first got a computer. I've heard so much belly-aching about this computer. I can't understand it.

All depends on what you're doing with the computer and how you are going about those tasks. For example, in 2014 I edited a 90-min feature film that was shot on a 4K RED with a 15" 2013 MBP. That was only quad core with 16GB of RAM (ie. unified memory). I edited in proxies and I wasn't in charge of the final export (ie. adding color correction, VFX, 5.1 mix, etc). However, that machine got me through an edit of entire feature. Which, looking back, I kind wish I never spent money upgrading computers in the years since. I probably could have used that laptop for longer than I did, haha. Again, it all depends on your expected tasks. What do you expect to use the computer for?

Otherwise, because I can't repair this machine myself, or do any upgrades, any project should probably be saved on external storage or NAS. I'm treating this machine more as a mega processing I/O tool. Yet because of the design, I have to store or keep a copy of my data on external storage. I think this is wise. No matter how fast and amazing the storage is, have a redundancy and disaster plan.

@@iam_riro there are several good choices for external thunderbolt storage, or 10GB NAS storage. It's all based on your requirements. Personally, I would only install apps on the internal drives. Note that the front USB-C ports on the Mac Studio M1 MAX are slower than the back Thunderbolt 4 ports (but not on the Ultra) so you might want to use the back ports if you test this.

External thunderbolt enclosures with nvme ssd are super fast (on rear TB ports) but ssd's like the Samsung T7 still have slower transfer speeds than a Mac with Intel chips (front and back ports same transfer speeds). I think this is the only downside of the M1 chips and I don't think Apple will ever bother to sort it out.

Low noise level. Feel the cooling solution may have been designed with the Intel processor since that was a major issues in previous Mac products. So take Intel processor out, and put Apple M1 series processor in without making any changes, and you have a system that just does not get hot. Thing is Apple can keep the same design for years to come. This normal made a purchase, and was thinking hard about the purchase of a Mac Studio with Studio Monitor. Steve Jobs unveiled my first Apple Macintosh computer with a $2,500 price tag, on Jan. 24, 1984. In todays dollars on March 8, 2022 adjusted for inflation would now cost $6,764.87. So if I was going for overkill for a normal I could purchase the new Studio Mac, and 27 inch Studio Monitor in the configuration I would like today it would cost me $4,198.00 which is less than the original Apple Macintosh computer adjusted for inflation would cost today. Us Homebrew people have spent a lot of money over the decades. After thinking about it for a few days, and speaking with my best friend this normal decided to purchase a Macbook Air M1 chip with 8‑core CPU, 7‑core GPU, and 16‑core Neural Engine, 16GB unified memory, 2TB SSD storage. Was going to purchase the 27 inch Studio Monitor to make it a KISS Apple solution. 27-inch is the sweet spot I am looking for. Thing was unlike the MacBook Air I purchased could not order/purchase the Studio Display for store delivery. So I purchased a 27" LG Ultra HD 5K Ultra Slim USB-C Monitor Widescreen LED IPS LCD w/ Webcam - Black - 27MD5KA-B which Apple was selling in in the past in its stores. Why did I not purchase the Mac mini? Almost came down to flip of a coin Mac mini, or Macbook Air. Thing is with the Macbook Air, and an external monitor like the Studio Monitor I can set these up in a two screen configuration if I want to. Also the Macbook Air gives me the option to take it with me, and use remotely if I have the need. Feel that Apple may be going back to the four quadrant product grid of consumer, desktop, laptop. Professional, desktop, laptop. With that I feel Apple should just have the Mac mini as it is now. No replacement for the 27-inch iMac product line. Normals can just purchase a base M series device, and for the professionals need to step up to the Mac Studio with Studio Monitor to replace the 27-inch iMac Pro. Mac Studio is a professional product after all it comes with black Apple Stickers.

It just has the same IO as my Intel macMini from 2018. I need three monitors and have an external nvmi and an external local 12 TB harddisk + NAS. I do only programming. So i would love to have more cpu cores but this is not giving enough for the bucks. If they can push the specs to 15/30 cores it would be nice and a sure buy. But so far i use my intel 12900k linux to develop the algorithm and then simply port it on macos

That's exactly what I said. I wanted the M1 Max, but it was just going to be on my desk, closed up for 90% of the time, so why spend the extra $1000 to have the option of unplugging all the dongles to take it somewhere else and not use it? My other idea was the M1 iMac, but limited ports and no Pro or Max version made me wait. I decided to get 1 TB storage, so now I have to wait another 3 weeks for it to show up. Until then I'm just going to watch KZbinrs with their Mac Studios... I'm a graphic designer, working in Illustrator and Photoshop daily, with the occasional tinkering in After Effects and Premiere Pro, so I don't think I'll need the Ultra, can't wait to try the M1 Max!

I use Premiere Pro and occasionally After Effects. If I purchase the Mac Studio M1 Max do you think I would be okay with the 32 Gb of ram? Also, what are your thoughts of upgrading to the 32-core GPU.

People use After effects on the m1 mini. You already are well beyond those specs with this base model. Depending on how often or how crazy you use it, I would get the base model.

Great review. I'm still waiting for mine - even though I bought mine on DAY ONE! So, I'm a little jealous. But... $8000 for top-o-the-line Mac Studio - is the price of a car? Where do you buy your cars? An $8000 used car is suspicious.

I admit, I was VERY pessimistic when Apple announced they were doing their own SOC. First thoughts I had: "yikes, we're going back to the days of mediocrity ... of Motorola and PowerPC". ... But damn. This M1 seems it came out of nowhere ... and now is in a position to potentially dictate the future of laptop/desktop CPU architecture.

If you do huge 50gb video and animation then its not on the ssd. I usually leave that alone and have fast external storage. I am sure someone is already designing a screen that fits off from the vents to catch most of the dust. My screens are so good now I clean my computer maybe every year and half, mainly just clean the screens. Main reason to upgrade SSD to 1 TB is that the larger SSD last longer. Dude, gpu alone are around 1000 or higher.

I am divided between Mac Mini (16/512) or base model of Studio. Currently have MBP 2017(15”) and it’s hanging a lot. I want to use it for Data Science/Analytics/ML/VM’s (Docker)/Plex/File Server and light video editing and regular applications. What do you think?

The Mini is plenty powerful. I run Plex on mine and also have a bunch of dev tools via Homebrew. It edits videos better than my Ryzen 2700x/Nvidia 2060 rig with 32GB of RAM. And I just have the 8GB version. Only thing lacking is ports. They make a pretty cool stacking hub though that gives you front ports including SD.
