I was having the same hard drive issue on both my Mac Studio and Intel Mac Mini when I updated to the latest pro tools. I was prompted by PT to set my hard drive to “R” (which I think literally means record lol 😒) inside PT via the workspace (I think) to able to record to my drive. That solved it for me.

unrelated-but..... a few years ago I was working on a broadcast automation system where we replaced a VTR with a mini server, for tapeless delivery of commercials. the vendor promised us that the server would emulate a VTR in regard to its remote control protocol.... but being tapeless, when the automation tried to cue the clip in the server, the response was almost instantaneous- "I'm cued", which threw an exception in the automation because no VTR on earth ever cues instantly- it has to back up the tape to the right frame & that takes a finite time, often several seconds. so..... maybe.... with the better buss speeds in the new mac, maybe protools is getting a 'write' acknowledgement back from the drive sooner than it is expecting. just a thought. have yyou raised a ticket with PT?

Tip for the mouse problem: I used to have connectivity problems with my old Magic Mouse. It was a problem with the batteries having too much space in the battery compartment. A piece of paper folded a few times wrapped around the batteries resulted in a lot less connectivity problems for me.

I can explain your issues : 1) the drive issue is a permission issue. You can fix it if you change the permissions of the main folder and folders underneath on your external drive to all users as read and write. Since external devices don’t work as a root folder permissions are necessary. 2) Plugin loading in Pro Tools… You probably work in Rosetta Mode and that’s why you have this long loading times. If you would try a native DAW, you will not see any issues like that. 3)Mouse issue: put some paper in it since the battery issue is an old one… the new Magic Mouse would be the better solution… one charge is enough for a month and you don’t have connection issues at all. 4) you can fix the fan „issue“ with an external tool and set the fan rpm to 1000-1100 without having issues under max load. You can use software like Macsfancontrol for it.

@prodby430
@prodby430 Жыл бұрын
@@freaky425 probably because it is much faster then any Intel machine ?! Also the Pro Tools issue will be fixed as soon as Pro Tools release a native Apple silicon version. The write permission issue with the external device can be fixed in under 20 seconds. Aswell as the fan control story. I don’t regret switching to Apple silicon and I had the 28 core Mac Pro aswell so I can compare it quit good I would say. 90% of the VSTs are also Apple silicon native and I don’t have any issues working with Studio One.

@@prodby430 cool! I am still with 2018, 32 Ram touch bar, and just observing when to spend 5k$ again. @@prodby430 Is it fast? Yes. But ANY Intel machine is a stretch. Given the cost will be a bit high (though competitive to a $9,000 Studio), you can easily build a 32-core, 256GB RAM intel system that would crush an M1 Ultra Studio for about $12,000. Here's the kicker: You can build an AMD 64-core Threadripper system that will absolutely obliterate ANYTHING the Studio can do. For $8,000.

I have zero issues. I have two MacBook from 2012 and love the system and the audio aggregate thing that we don't have on Windows, at least natively. There are too many audio plugins that aren't still Silicon compatible for now, so I'll wait and save my money in theses difficult times and that's thanks to you 😄

A lot of people seem to "hate" the magic mouse in general. I loved it since i first start using it! I have the second gen for awhile now. I'm happy with it. I have the Logitech MX Master 2 but it doesn't quite work for me. I don't know but i love the ease of use with the Magic Mouse. Also, for the charging, i mostly let it charge at night. It charges incredibly fast! It is absolutely stupid to have such a design that prevents you from using it while charging though. But if you are like me and you charge it over night, it doesn't really give much problems. Another option would be to buy a second one. So that you always have one charged and one in use... I think the Mac Studio is a great machine. But i'm still happy i made the purchase i did around 2-3 ago when i bought the 2019 Mac Pro. I have zero regrets. It's quiet, reliable, i have 96GB of RAM with 8TB and a 16-core CPU. Only thing lacking is my GPU which is only the AMD W5700XT with 16GB. The weird little quirky things that happen with the Mac Studio is one of the reasons why i don't want it right now. Though i must say, i work with Logic Pro X. So it might work a little better because its software from Apple. I don't know. Anyway, since the second gen of M1 has been revealed, i assume it won't be too long before we finally see that new Mac Pro as well. I'm pretty curious though i am completely fine with my Mac Pro for now.

I switched to a Logitech MX Master 3 mouse on my M1. Includes a horizontal scroll wheel as well as the good old vertical scroll. You can also program for example a few favo shortcuts, and assign them to one of the buttons. Best feature i like actually is the thumb-rest, which i didnt see coming to be honest. Not dragging your thumb over the desk does make a difference, really. Might want to give it a try. Oh and it is rechargeable with a usb-c cord, while you still continue to use it. The only downside i found is to use it with another machine (you can switch between 3 macs for example) you need to press the button on the - drum roll - bottom. Duh! But if you're not a frequent switcher, you should be fine.

I’ve been using an MX Master 3 for 3-4 years now (previously using MX Master 2) and took delivery of a Studio Max a few weeks ago (Trashcan MacPro previously). No mouse issues that I can see and I use it 10+ hours a day. The Studio has a few minor quirks that I’m sure will be rectified once Adobe and Apple get in sync. After waking the Studio from sleep mode, my Adobe programs will have the tops of the windows in the center of the screen and it’s tool panels splashed across my second monitor. I don’t know if that is a Studio thing or just an M-chip thing but it’s only the Adobe programs. Also having fun tuning in the sleep/wake settings.

Colt, on your Magic Mouse. Make sure there isn't oxidation of the battery contacts. I've seen it cause drops and flaky behavior. Take a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol and clean the nickel colored internal battery contacts. Then hit it with a dry swab and make sure it's super shinny. You do that and you should be good to go. I use that mouse as my backup when I have to charge one belly up. 🙂

It also charges very fast, so the very rare instance when I've had to charge it in the middle of the day, I can get 40% or more in like 15-20mins. Hard drive issue: There is the possibility for some users (although I’m sure you checked this) that they simply need to define the drives in ProTools as record drives. Sometimes I can’t even move the tracks. If I try it will just play. I also can’t rename folders on the desktop…I’ve tried multiple mice & in system settings I’ve tried every level of double-click mouse speed. I have no problems on my wife’s Mac Mini. We’re both using Ventura, though I believe she has a slightly earlier version. Also, many times I’ll click an area up top to arrange by: artist or genre & it won’t do anything. I’ll have to click it 8 times or so for it to follow the command.

I use a Trackball with Apple Track Pad. Try switching to Thunderbolt 3 or 4 cables as they cover all the standards of USB. Also, if your hard drives have special software check to see if there is a firmware update for it.

Hey Colt, question for you. I’m a Logic Pro X mixer and I am wanting to upgrade my system, but I’m not sure whether to buy the Mac M1 Studio or the new Waves Proton server to take the plug-in load off my iMac. Any thoughts on which one would be a better investment? Thanks, Jamie 🇨🇦

Hello! What did you end up buying for your studio? As I understand, Waves Proton can ONLY be used for Waves plugins. And I have very few of them. I have a lot of plugins from various other companies. It turns out that I don’t need this Waves PROTON? Useless. Are there other rack Servers for All plugins (for all companies)?

What I've discovered on my Mac Studio is that the rear Thunderbolt/UBS ports are defective. They cause consistent drop out, freezes, crashes and more fun stuff. The front ports are All Good, but the rear ports are a disaster. And I need those ports to work perfectly. This is my first new Mac in many years (I have so so so many Macs but in the last few years Apple appeared to lose their way and I ended up building my own Hacks instead to great effect), but have been wanting a reason to move back to their hardware - and the M chip was it. Unfortunately, after many dozens hours of tests and searches, I've concluded this is a very common issue, not likely related to software and despite how much I want to love it and boy do I ever love the M chip and GPU engines, my Studio is ...well much more a Lemon than an Apple.

Hey Colt, long-time ProTools user here and also an Avid Certified Instructor for ProTools. You might want to check the Disk Permissions IN Protools. Navigate to Window -> New Workspace -> Default and open the Workspace browser. Check if your SSD drive you are using to record on has the permissions set to "R" and not "P". Occasionally, PT might glitch out and change the permissions for whatever reasons. I've experienced it once even though my settings were all the same and I didn't change anything in PT. I hope this eliminates the possibility of that setting in PT itself. This will prevent anything from recording onto the disk itself in PT if the permissions are changed from "R" to "P".

Yeah that disk issue is probably Rosetta-related, I have the same SSD's and no problem at all using Logic in native mode with those. Definitely having to deal with other issues though, like projects taking forever to open, and massive CPU spikes/system overloads when hitting play or moving the playhead around in big sessions. For the fan, the noise can be lowered a bit by installing Macs Fan Control (free app), you can lower the base spinning speed to 1100 instead of the usual 1300+.

weird, since i'm using logic in native mode, the project loading times are ridiculously fast. 100-200 track projects loading up in 10 sec.. to be honest at this point for me the whole logic experience with a lot of third party plugins is more flawless than ever before on any intel machine.
@davidbmixing

@@mikloskovacs3734 are you on Logic 10.7.3? What happens for me is the plug-in loading window opens and the progress bar is stuck on klopfgeist (the metronome thing), and after waiting a while the project finally opens. Maybe it's due to some particular plug-ins causing issues. Those sessions have 100+ plug-ins, but still, it's taking at least as long as it did with my old iMac, which is really weird.

I agree with some of the comments below - PT could be the problem here. I have my Mac Studio using Logic, and a few external SSDs - SanDisk, Samsung, and G-Drive and no issues reading and recording to them. I think all my plugins (a lot of different brands) work in Logic Pro - no issues. After about a week of using I switch off Rosetta, and things run even smoother. I expected some plugins will not load but so far so good. I've heard issues with ProTools and M1 Macs so likely not a Mac Studio issue. The only issue I had was Bluetooth strength. Where I put the Mac Studio now is not a direct path to my MS BT mouse, and I found it "jerky" a lot of times. Never had this issue with my old iMac Pro.

Try the new Magic Mouse. Using all day, battery lasts about a month. If you run out of battery, you can charge it for a couple minutes and go for another hour. Maybe completely charges in an hour. The old one like you have, it used to feel like the batteries were always going dead. Also the pairing, plug it into the usb cable and it's paired. Want to use it on another Mac, same thing and it only takes a couple seconds.

Depending on the Mac Studio config the front ports are usb c not thunderbolt. Does That also happen when you connect a thunderbolt drive to one of the ports on the back? Some software does not like usb drives. That could either be a PT or rosetta issue.

Discovered that my external SSD was formatted as Apple Journaled. Checked the docs at Spitfire & Spectrasonics and they strongly recommended reformatting the drives to APFS for Apple Silicon machines running Monterey. Once I did that...all of my issues with my Mac Studio vanished.

Honest video. I’ve had my share of issues as well. I still have to convert USB-A 3.0 to 2.0 via an adapter otherwise it is glitchy. Also issues with my Sandisk getting hot even when in sleep and ejected, but still plugged in. Logic Pro has been also glitchy via working off the Sandisk. Otherwise it’s been good, but not surprisingly better than my M1 16gb 1tb Mac Mini.

The inability for protools to record to your external drive is likely a permission issue. Your external disk has open read permissions, but something is wonky with your write permissions. You either need to grant write permissions on the drive across the board, or grant protools permission to write to the external drive.

Certain usb hubs are just a no go with the Mac studio, my Maschine Studio will show up in one hub but not in another. the drive case that works for me is the Sabrent dual NVME / Thunderbolt enclosure. Those work for mix and record, at least for Nuendo. Also the Apple Trackpad can have some issues if connected via usb or ble. The Ultra seems to have more fan noise than the base model. I have a base model and really like it , even with the quirks. M1 growing pains.

FYI, Mac Studio two front USB-C ports vary between the Mac Studio M1 Max and Mac Studio M1 Ultra. On the Max the two front ports are USB up to 10Gb/s while on the Ultra they are 40Gb/s transfer rate. Only the Ultra uses Thunderbolt4 on the two front USB-C ports. This appears to be a limitation of a single Max SoC processor while the Ultra has two Max SoC's on the same processor die therefore adding support for more Thunderbolt channels.
