I think so. Let's say you think you can cover 2,500 in 12 minutes. Set the speed to 12.5km/s and see if you can hold it for 12 mins. 12.5 = 2. 5 km * 5 / . (multipy by 5 to divide by 12 mins). It's a pass/fail to your estimate.

I can't imagine it's very accurate. There's wind resistance from running outside and you'd have to factor in the belt not immediately being at the speed you set on the treadmill. You could probably get within +/- 5 ml/kg/min if all you want is a rough estimate

Unlike a cycling or rowing test, running already fully incorporates your weight, so if a 60kg person can cover 3km in 12 minutes and a 90kg person can cover 3km in 12 minutes, they will both have the same VO2 max
