Okay so this is going to be a long comment pls read till end. I am 9 and I am going to Maui this summer and we might watch surfers here before I watched this and Mavericks Nightmere, when u saw wipeouts I was like oh that must hurt however that was before I had a bad wipeout. I was at windnce in CA there was like a 6 foot swell I rode one on my body board however the one I rode was shorebreak. The wave took me to the sand and slammed me down I still remember it vividly it felt like I had lost all my arms and legs and then the lip hit me hard it took me around and threw me over to the sand.

When I see skaters on a mega ramp I realize I can't do it, but I understand how somebody is capable of it. When I see the pure size, violence, and force of these big waves my mind can't comprehend how anybody does it. Mother nature is unrelenting, the fear of drowning would be extremely high, unbearably high. These cats are a different breed

Fear induced heart rate spike causes that. 115-145 bpm. In the line up their heart rate is elevated already and when your wave jacks up and it’s go time you primitive brain thinks you just found a bear in your cave, it doesn’t know you do this for a living. All nonessential systems power down including your memory. That’s not going to help you at the moment so your brain does away with it. Threat focus is paramount. Elite athletes and special forces soldiers are elite because they can manage that if I screw up I die adrenaline dump and remain composed. It’s an art form.
