I like to think of 'r' as a vowel. By that rule, there are a bunch of words without consonants.

@@Switzerland_1841 It's my own observation. Characteristics of a vowel: Unobstructed airflow through the mouth. Involves a hum from the voice box. Without a hum, the sound becomes 'h'. Specifically, the h that would proceed the vowel in a syllable. (Example, 'e' to 'h' as in "he") . With those three metrics, 'r' would qualify as a vowel. Consider the word "her". Despite the written 'e', it is not voiced. The sound is the same as in the words "fir" and "bur". Also, using the mouth shape of 'r' I can make an 'h' sound, just like the vowels. But I must add that I only *like* calling r a vowel. I would never mention this argument to someone learning English. I just like to ponder the way I do things. . . . More disturbingly, a variety of 'l' fits this description of vowel. Specifically as it is found in the words "bull" and "hole".
