Democracy or not, it is just a word and concept. It is better and easier to look at the facts that all can agree on, such as history. Let's compare the histories of the US and China. When the US became independent from Britain, the superpower at the time, it defeated Britain in the Revolutionary War in 1776. The US political system took about 130 years to catch up to Britain at the time around World War I in 1914. When Communist China was founded in 1949, it defeated the US, the superpower than, sort of in the Korean War. So far, the Chinese political system has taken 75 years to catch up to the US, and it is still going.

A story about democracy: A farmer asked his son before he died, "Pigs complain about poor feed, cows complain about heavy work, and chickens complain about dirty nests. What should you do?". The son said, "Change to good feed, change ploughs, clean up chicken coop." The farmer shook his head and said, “No, don't do anything. Let them vote one from the pigs, the cows or the chicken to take care of them, let them think they control their destinies.” Son’s idea = Chinese democracy (Get things done) Father’s idea = American democracy (Election circus)

FYI, the West or democracies have been acting as if they were the Chinese opposition parties. They care or even love China and Chinese people so much that not only do they carefully watch China and point out every mistake made by the communists, but they also provide solutions and better alternatives. Obviously, the best idea from the West is democracy, but surprisingly, not God nor Jesus. So, comparing history, one of the Chinese communists' significant achievements is turning the West into lovers of China since the Westerners love everything about China so much that they love Dalai Lama, Muslim Uighur in Xinjiang, Taiwanese, etc., etc. By the way, the only thing the West doesn't love about China is communism, which is a Western idea. If the current Western love for China hasn't impressed you, please consider the history that all democracies, without a single exception, have invaded China, looted China's wealth, and killed Chinese people. The simple historical facts are that Christian democracies has killed numerous humans worldwide and is still killing humans all over the world, thanks to the Chinese communists, except around China after the brave Americans left Afghanistan. So, the only thing I like or even admire about democracy is its ability to kill humans and the astronomical number of humans it has killed and is continuously killing. Does anyone still love democracy and care about whether China is a democracy?

Since China operates as a one-party system, policies are proposed and approved within a short period of time. In the U.S. and most so-called democratic countries, policies must undergo lengthy debates before being approved or even rejected. The Chinese government listens to the people's voices and will reverse policies that are widely opposed. Most importantly, leaders are selected based on merits. Potential members of CPC need to pass tests before being accepted as members. Xi Jinping himself did not get admiited into the party at first try. Chinese investments in high-speed rail is not aimed at making money but at serving the people and promoting economic growth. An efficient transportation system boosts the economy. This is more important to China than ticket sales.

The key to understanding the Chinese economy is in the Sinology literature. The Chinese system is heavily influenced by Confucian thought, not just Maoism, and certainly not just western economic thought. One has to think beyond "the market or state" compartmentalisation. This is something all neo-classical economists seem to want to do. When it comes to the political system, it is a one party state, but that party is very representative in a decentralised system (this is a major difference with the Soviet Union which was much more top-down). You will find that party leaders are represented at village level, and sometimes they face a hostile public. These representatives have to go back and report rural dissatisfaction to the more senior Party members. You will find they are really on their toes and very much aware of their citizen's and local concerns. This is unlike the US which has an elitist out of touch oligopoly in power. On the 1990s, China was not really wild-west. It had a "two steps forward, one step back" policy to liberalisation of state owned enterprises. This was unlike the shock therapy undertaken under neo-classical and IMF instruction in the USSR.

Add to this the recent obsession with political correctness, and the religious intensity of liberal causes to a degree that excludes common sense, stoked by the algorithmic social media, and you have this irrational, toxic aggression and self-righteous rage that permeates society to the extent of total and utter dysfunction.

Capitalism, as its name suggested exactly, is for capitalists, not for some random joe. And I assure you that being a capitalist will be much much more safe and happier in the US, tho not so much for a normal working class person

I believe other countries cannot and will not adopt China's political system which is based on largely Confucius teaching, 5000 years of cultural and historical experience of living, customs and habits. These Chinese traits are deeply rooted in the Chinese DNA. Hence Chinese political system cannot be replicated or cloned in other countries. Chinese leaders ( the emperors or dictators as called by the Westerner ) are taught by Confucius to serve and care for the people. The classical example of the Chinese leaders serving the people is the high speed rail of 46000 km length and speed of 350 km/hr. This high speed rail fares are relatively low so that many people can travel on it, and the government is running it at great loss annually. The US and the West cannot adopt such Chinese high speed rail system without making a profit. The streets and subway cabins superb cleanliness can be had only in China and not in the US or the West. The main problem of the US and the west is the politicians play money politics-- corruption is the core failure of national development. They should adopt Confucius teaching to serve the people.

Bourgeois democracy means party politics by voting, and the domination of the capitalist economy over politics. HISTORY HAS PROVEN THAT WESTERN PARTY POLITICS, FIXATED ON THE STRUGGLE BETWEEN LEFT AND RIGHT, IS UNABLE TO SOLVE IMPORTANT SOCIAL PROBLEMS. In socialist China the ONE PARTY-STATE manages the capitalist economy with computers to serve the COMMON GOOD. SO, WESTERN INTELLECTUALS HAVE TO GIVE UP ON BOTH MARXIST REASONING (CAPITALISM IS BAD) AND IDEALIZING DEMOCRACY.( AUTHORITY IS BAD)

you are right....every 4 years an election of a person you mostly do not know but a lot of propaganda around the person - and if the person does not deliver you cannot vote him/her out. In Switzerland they have system whereby very often the Swiss vote about critical questions and the government hast implement. Also the parties have to work together - so no civil wars like in the US

In the US, there is no guiding hand, no organizing force, to coordinate the nation's businesses to work towards a specific economic goal or strategy.

US politicians cannot have long term plans like in China. President changes too frequently

Excellent video in the Ben Norton tradition on the relative merits of the Chinese system as compared to the fault-ridden US system that has been exalted as the epitome of human achievements in western media.

Thank you for presenting your good knowledge of China. China is working for all its citizens; not to be controlled / influenced by the rich and big companies.

Ben, I think it breaks down like this: In the US, the government is run by business and decisions are skewed toward what will benefit them the most, (their private interests). So, from this I take "Concentrated wealth and power is by nature, anti-social." Contrast this with China, where the business sector is rewarded for operating in the PUblic Interest. They allow capitalist to operate but only to the degree that they contribute to the Public Interest. In other words, without strong regulation, capitalism will undermine the very system that gave rise to it.

It is a meritocracy system. I can’t simply run if I am not qualified and don’t have the experience.

The US focus on their ideological assumptions that they and only they can provide security and protection to the rest of the world, have aggressively lead the US to lose sight of the balance that has to be achieved. Spending focuses on the MIC, sponsorship for Elections and reductions of taxes for sponsors, etc etc.continued to reduce emphasis of citizens' well being, infrastructure, education, inequality and many more. Expenditures towards convincing Citizens that others are a treat and towards propaganda that paints them as treats just continues to create further imbalance within the system. It should not have come this far. Need not have come this far. Alas too much damage has been done. It's not too late! How do we stop this bleeding and strife towards the balance that we should have had???????
