The biggest mystery from the Voyage of Dawn Treader for me is the sea people/mermaids (or something of the kind) that we encounter almost near the end of the world. I recall that Lucy saw them driving sea horses, that they had a busy and arrogant attitude, and that it was said they may be hostile towards travelers. It always seemed to me that they represent some separate civilization underwater, and a quite advanced one. The question of how they are related to Aslan's universe still haunts me Thanks for the marvelous video, as always, by the way!
@IntotheWardrobe3 жыл бұрын
Yes! It's such an odd addition at the final stretch of the voyage. I can't help but suspect there's a deeper purpose (no lun intended) to their presence in the story, but it's a puzzle I've not yet solved. Let me know if you figure it out!

@@IntotheWardrobe Have you read Michael Ward’s “Planet Narnia”? It’s a scholarly work, so not light bedtime reading, but it is really interesting. The reason I bring it up here is that I have a personal theory about what that episode is doing here, but it’s deeply connected with that book. Basically, if you haven’t read it, Ward’s contention, and I think it’s a good one, is that each of the seven Narnian Chronicles are written “through the symbolic lens”, if you like, of one of the seven Medieval planets; Dawn Treader being Sol. The light of the Sun is universal, and so it’s in this book that you find this separate Narnian civilization under the sea, which also presumably answers to Aslan, and also the revelation that Aslan has other names in other worlds including our own. It’s a very symbolically Solar book, in the Medieval sense, and that comes through in numerous ways

In the voyage of the dawn threader Edmond mentions that the sea people seem to be deferent compared to the ones they knew durring their rule in the golden age, the ones they knew ( back in Narnia ) could live in the air as well as under water , the sea people ( in the chapter, wonders of the last sea ) can't , and they appear to be rather fearfull and hostil towards the Narnians aboard the dawn threader Anyway thanks for this great episode I really injoyed it and all the others, I can't wait to see more of your awesome and amazing content, keep up the good work!

Wonderful! Dawn Treader was always my favorite of the books and I remember wanting to live in the Seven Isles as a child, and being disappointed that we never got to see Galma, Terebinthia or the Seven Isles. One thing that always puzzled me was why there didn’t seem to have been any Talking Beasts in the islands. Caspian I the Conqueror is unlikely to have extirpated them; Telmarines fear and shun the sea. And yet Reepicheep is treated like a performing circus animal, so obviously the Lone Islanders didn’t even know about Talking Beasts. Eagerly awaiting part 2

There is a brief reference to the Lone Island`s in "The Last Battle". From the few hints, it looks like the Islands were always human-inhabited but came under the rule of some of King Frank`s descendants long before that dynasty ended and long before The Witch.

These are great videos. I have even come up with some of my own theories. In The Last Battle, Shift is behind the operation of taking over, yet eventually Rishda and Ginger took over. I have a theory, "What if Rishda has been behind the operation all this time?" Even before Shift and Puzzle find the lion skin, Jewel does mention in the book that Shift was most likely in secret communication with the Tisroc of Calormen. Then I wondered, "What if Rishda was involved in the communication as well?" After Shift got into drinking, he lost control over Narnia, so it would have made it easier for Rishda to take over, but I have a theory that Rishda may have been in secret communication with Shift even before Calormenes came into Narnia.
@IntotheWardrobe3 жыл бұрын
Wow! Really interesting ideas!
@jasminelaury7362 жыл бұрын
@@IntotheWardrobe Yeah. It's a theory at least. Who knows when the balance of power fell to Rishda. All Shift was interested in getting all the oranges and bananas he could get. Eventually, Shift lost control over Narnia. And who knows how Ginger got involved. He could have just been sitting there until Shift comes with the idea, "Oh, Tash and Aslan are one and the same." I am still inclined to the theory that Rishda was in secret communication with Shift prior to the Calormenes coming into Narnia. It might be something for Netflix to do.

I've traced the route in the book and Baynes map seems fairly accurate. There will be a video about this journey one of these days. Some really interesting data to be gleaned from Eustace's log book!
@MagusMarquillin3 жыл бұрын
Nice tour! Is that an official map, like by Pauline Baynes or is it a fan art? You say we're "off the map" as it were, but then you pull out a new map. I'd imagine Caspian's crew would have drawn something up as they went, I wonder if they brought a cartographer. I also wonder how many people actually get to dine at Alan's table in the history of Narnia, was it just Caspian's crew and the 3 lords before him? Maybe more have made this pilgrimage/permanent migration Maybe the stars eat from it; I'm not sure if they eat our food or just those sun berries that make them younger. And I don't suppose Aslan himself eats from the table, he seems the sort to hunt and eat fresh food. Doesn't seem like he could use cutlery anyway, not like beavers and badgers could - wait even that Fox in tLtWatW was holding a goblet so who knows, I'm just don't tend to think of talking beasts like that, especially Aslan. Do they all have opposible thumbs? :p Seems like you've covered most of the eastern ocean, have you got enough material for a second video with Alsan's county - I guess there's a lot of room to speculate on that land, like is it part of the same world, or of another dimension (out of the Shadowlands), there's a lot of other rules there as seen in Silver Chair. Plus I suppose you can still cover the strange things that are under the ocean water. :)
@IntotheWardrobe3 жыл бұрын
What great comments you always leave! The color map is Pauline Bayne's official map. The second map with the Eastern Ocean Islands is by a fellow named David Bedell. I can't find much info on him, but apparently he created the map based on information he gathered from the books. I'll be taking a deeper look at this map very soon. By the way, Coriakin the Magician created a magical map for the crew, so I guess they did have their own cartographer. :-) But you would think they would have at least kept very detailed charts so they could find their way home, right?
@MagusMarquillin3 жыл бұрын
@@IntotheWardrobe Yeah, Pauline's work is pretty nearly canon since she was tight with Lewis, but I don't suppose that extends to Bedell. I have another version of the eastern ocean in the Companion to Narnia (4th edition) drawn by Lorinda Bryan Cauley but she puts Terebinthia above Galma and flatens out the whole bight of Calormen, so I guess it's not to reliable - very pretty though!

Great video! One thing I would like clarification on. When I read Voyage of the Dawn Treader, I always had the idea that just touching the dragon treasure was not enough to turn someone into a dragon. I thought it was specifically sleeping on the treasure with "dragonish" greed in his heart. My interpretation was that if you found and took the treasure, but were not overly greedy, you might be fine. Like, if you found it and were like "I am going to feed a lot of orphans with this gold," I expect you'd be fine. It actually bugged me in the movie because they said it was just the cursed treasure, and I thought that removed the guilt from Eustace. I thought that the sin of greed was more the deciding factor than just the treasure itself. So am I way wrong? Do we have notes from Lewis or something on that?

Not yet. It's a VERY DEEP dive. I'm still finalizing research--and gathering my strength! Thanks for checking!

@@IntotheWardrobe awesome thanks. I loved these books as a kid but I haven't read them in maybe 15 years. I sped through a lot of your videos last night and wow! I really need to reread these. The first time through the Dawn Treader was my favorite. The Islands facinated me so really looking forward to it

I've watched a few of your videos but haven't heard any mention of the BBC live action series covering the first 4 books.

In VODT ,Eustace's parents are mentioned with some peculiar descriptions. What did Lewis refer to?

Probably the book i love the most. The journey into the unknown, strange mysteries and just overwordly things. I just wished it would have been a bit longer and some things more explained. Especially the "Dark island". What was it? Why did it even exist? And correct me if im wrong, but wasn the "Dreams come true" the lie? Because it was not your dream that would come true. (Like the one sailor seeing his dead wife again.) It was a nightmare, born out of fears, taking form and tormenting the person. Nothing good existed on that "land". How did the Lord even survive there?

Could you make a video of your personal ranking of the books?

so did Aslan create dark island? if not then who made it and if he did make it why did he destroy it? just because Lucy was put in danger? it really does seem like Lucy is Aslan's ultimate favorite, he always comes to her aid

Given that the entirety of Narnian history comprises less than 3000 years, it's incredible that the world, including these islands, are as inhabited as they are. From Magician's Nephew we know that all life started in Narnia, including all of the creatures created by Aslan, and Jadis, the cabby, the cabby's wife, and the cabby's horse. Human migration in our world took millennia, and while it is true that the cabby, and his wife's, 19th century knowledge would have meant that Narnian humans started out knowing a little more than our ancient ancestors, it is still astounding that - within 300 years of the dawn of time - people would have started to populate somewhat distant islands, like the Lone Islands. There must have been people, and a rudimentary government on the islands by 302, for them to be oppressed by a dragon, and be saved by King Gaile, who then swore fealty to. Also, a surprising amount of cultural drift must have occured before Gaile conquered the dragon, despite the fact that it must have been colonise in recent history, there being no other kind of history at that point in Narnia, there seems to have been no contact between the Narnian mainland and the Lone Islanders before King Gaile arrived. It isn't just humans either, the monopod dwarves on the Island of the Duffers must also descend from Narnian dwarves, all like beginning in Narnia. Given that half-Dwarf Dr. Cornelius taught Prince Caspian seamanship, presumably Narnia's dwarves have some history of seafaring, but even so the Island of the Duffers is a long way out. Also it's been a while since I've read Dawntreader, so I can't recall if the dwarves single-leggedness is the product of a curse or natural, but it is natural that is a substantial mutation away from conventional dwarf appearance. Assuming that the original colony was only a few dwarves, such a substantial mutation is conceivable, with any insular population some level of inbreeding is to be expected, and this can lead to mutation, but it would take a while. I'd be willing to bet that the dwarven ancestors of the Duffers got to that distant island early on in Narnian history.

So... Terebinthia has no relation to the movie 'The Bridge to Terabithia', right? That's just a coincidence?
@IntotheWardrobe3 жыл бұрын
Katherine Patterson said she probably subconsciously used Narnia's Terebinthia as inspiration, since she was a big fan of the books. In the book, one of the characters actually lends "The Chronicles of Narnia" to a friend!

I have wondered the same thing. Since we never land there, for all we know Jess and Leslie were imagining it as it really was! They just weren't granted physical access.
