Reaction To John Clarke (The Games - 100m Track) Australian Comedy
This is my reaction to John Clarke (The Games - 100m Track)
In this video I react to Australian comedy from legendary comedian John Clarke and his funny Australian satire comedy show from the Sydney 2000 Olympics called The Games.

The Games was compulsory viewing for most people leading up to the Olympics. It was brilliant, so funny and at times eerily accurate! You may be able to buy the series on DVD.

Glad you showed an extended version of this episode. The whole series is a real hoot, full of buck passing and political doublespeak. And yeah, Utopia is brilliant too.

Really enjoyed this trip down memory lane. Loved The Games at the time and it's still fun. Australia doesn't do as much political satire as the UK but we have a few classic gems like this, thanks!

There was some missing from closer to the beginning of the clip: Clarke: Mr Wilson, do you know who is the current 100 meters all-comers Australian record holder? Wilson: No, can I guess? Clarke: Oh, there's not much point in guessing Mr Wilson. Wilson: Is he an African-American? Clarke: He's not an African-American, no. Wilson: Is he that Canadian from Jamaica? Clarke: No, he's not a Canadian from Jamaica, no. Wilson: I give up. Clarke: The 100 meters record in this country Mr Wilson is currently held by Brian. Wilson: Brian? Brian: Yes. Wilson: (Shaking hands with Brian) Congratulations. Brian: Thank you. Clarke: A new mark, Mr Wilson, set in a blistering session last Wednesday, and I wish you'd been there. We were down there and we had a bet. Wilson: Was this wind assisted? Clarke: No, and we'd had a couple, and in my view Brian's not in quite the nick he was at the same stage as last season. Wilson: So you've measured the track? Clarke: Yeah, we've measured the track Mr Wilson. Wilson: So you know how long the 100 meters track is? Clarke: Yes, we do. Wilson: Okay. Clarke: How long is it, Mr Wilson? Wilson: You know how long it is. Clarke: I want to hear you say it. Wilson: 94 meters. Clarke: 94 meters. 94 meters. Well, we've got a new event, haven't we Mr Wilson? Brian: The 94 meters. Clarke: In fact we've got two new events, haven't we? The 94 meters for men and the 94 meters for women. Brian: Hang on, would that replace the 100 meters or is this a new event, 'cause there'd be a cost element here wouldn't there? Wilson: That would be in place of the 100 meters. Clarke: Why? Wilson: You don't have a 100 meters event. You haven't got a 100 meters track.

Hats off to ya; and you’ve still got a working dvd player. This was the magic bit everyone remembers, perhaps you’ve remembered it by heart. The curiosity remains as to why it was left out by Umbrella.

Utopia is fantastic. Ep 7 of The Games is hilarious. “”The swimming schedule has been disastrously modified at the last minute. Meanwhile, Gina and John are asked to babysit an IOC member who has turned up dead the day before a major Dinner, while Bryan and Jasmine go to meet President Mandela and Princess Margaret at the airport.”

I worked with someone who was seconded to SOCOG. He said that everyone watched “The Games” and enjoyed it. Except for one guy in the office who was convinced that there was a spy in the office! :) He couldn’t be persuaded that brilliant comedians have imagination and talent enough to make up what’s in the big black box.

You need to see a show called Bargearse. It was a seventies cop show based in Melbourne that was overdubbed by The De-Generation (Working Dog). There only 2-3 minute shows but there hilarious. It’s up on KZbin.

I am a costume designer. Many years ago when John was not so well known we worked together on a very, very boring cheap corporate video.Even back then he was so serious about producing a good product he nearly broke his brain & the director's patience/brainstorming & improvising to make it entertaining.I will say @ the same time he wasn't exactly easy to work with.In my career i have found genius perfectionists invariably are not.😉

You think this is just comedy but we have a situation here in Melbourne were the Victorian Government has just built a new Railway Station, problem is they built it 10 metres short to take the new trains which will be introduced at some stage ( comedy & real life )

They missed out the bit before he admitted that the track was 94 metres - that was about Brian being the fastest runner in Australia for the 100 metres as he tried the track out. It was a brilliant show. Actually the English took the idea and tried it before the Olympics in the UK but I dont think it was as great as the Aussie one

The Poms completely ripped off this show with one called Twenty Twelve in the lead up to the London Games. John Clarke went to the BBC suggesting they could do a show like The Games for the London lead up and also showed them videos of episodes of The Games but eventually they turned him down. They then went ahead and made Twenty Twelve and claimed it was an 'original idea'. A-holes.

An interesting byline of this was that "The Games' sought to do a subsequent show on UK TV for the London Olympics, but hit a very thick brick wall. Is it possible that Australians are more comfortable taking the piss out of themselves than the more sensitive British

The amusing thing is that by the end of the series the production company was hearing about actual real world problems (via leaks) with the Sydney Olympics before the actual officials responsible for it. And they were actually offered a free corporate box at the games for "service to the Sydney Olympics," to which John Dawes replied "Have you actually watched the show?"

10 hrs ago AndrewJens posted the best bit that was edited for some reason. Please give him an emoji response at least because without that bit the skit seems a bit flat. It was a tremendous and very well loved comedy. So much so that Clarke took it to the BBC to make a bid to do similar for the BBC ahead of London 2012. They were given the tapes and they talked thru co writers and casting but didn’t succeed. But the BbC went ahead with a copy of the show called 2012 without any recompense or acknowledgement to Clarke and he tried and failed to sue. Another thing I enjoyed and you may too is that on a rare occasion of an on location filming they passed by a painter who gave them a nod of recognition. Afterwards Clarke approached the painter for a chat and he told him that the reason why he and his mates love his work is because it presents like a secret - between the people who make the show and the people who watch. Seems like rolling paint gives you plenty of space for profundity.

I loved the Games it coincided with the actual run up to the Olympics. It is totally up your ally and it it is filmed in documentary style with a film crew following them around. Also stars Gina Riley from Big Girls Blouse and Kath and Kim.
