Another excellent piece of music from Australia. The chemistry that John and Jimmy has is unmatched and their talent is even more impressive. 2 of the best singers in the world and they just work perfectly together. What did you think about this song?

Humility, John has it. I worked in a KFC store in the eighties, he walked in and the customers in line tried to let him past, he refused and said he was just another customer and waited his turn. He did not demand or expect better treatment because of who he is, it was a lesson for all of us.

Best story of him I have heard was an Army serviceman who saw him at an airport and said G'day, starstruck, but John instead made him feel like the star and iirc had his manager swap seats so they could talk on the flight.

Sadly the same cannot be said for the other. The whole crew, pulled into the Roadhouse on the Gold Coast that my friend worked at. Instead of ordering the food from the set menu he demanded they make their food to order. When she told him that they could only provide the food as it was on the board he threw a massive tantrum and demanded to see the manager. My friend was fired that night. I've never told this story to anyone until now, and though I enjoy his music it still makes me angry that she lost the income she needed to provide for her children because he was an arrogant bastard. Sorry Jimmy, but my friend didn't deserve what you did to her.

The best way I can think to compare John and Jimmy is that Jimmy is like an American muscle car. Big v8. All power. Will blow your socks off as it drives past. Whereas John is like an Italian formula 1 car. Tuned to perfection. Pure and sings best at high revs. Both equally as awesome but in different ways.

I've met & talked to John countless times, since I was 10 yrs old coz my dad worked on the productions of music shows & he'd intro Farnham to us & others such asThe Bee Gees, Russell Morris & more, even The Beatles in 1964. yep, the fucking Beatles! My life is so blessed. John is the most humble, playful, generous & funny bloke in the music biz. When I listen to him sing now, over 50 years later, I still shed a tear. Look how often John has his microphone down. No one has out powered him yet and his range is crazy good. There is a reason he has one of the best voices in the world and he never knew it. He is just having fun with a friend he admires. He would never compete. I watched Ray Martin who is a famous interviewer here. From the midday show to 60 minutes, he is also a nice man. He told John he had never seen him cranky or angry. John told him he can get a bit snippy sometimes at home and he has noticed that his bride Jilly gets snippy 12 times a year. Ray told him that Jilly would get him for that.

He doesn't even need to sing! Just standing along side the mic stand clapping as is backing vocalists sing, he has this amazing presence and aurora. So glad you have discovered him. You have to watch Cold Chisel perform this live as an acoustic song, with long since passed drummer Steve Prestwidge (who co-wrote this song) frozen in time playing a shaker box on stage... eerie, and haunting.

Apparently, and no doubt someone will correct me in the next millisecond if I'm wrong, but this song wasn't actually about war... it was about a break up after a tumultuous relationship.... another common thought is that Steve Prestwich (Chisels' drummer RIP) wrote it about a young guy who got locked up (prison) and this was about his thoughts when he got out....

If I'm correct the drummer from cold chisel wrote this song and then when the band broke up the drummer( can't think of his name) joined the little River band with John Farnham and he let John record the song as well. Originally the song is about a relationship how the break up was like a war and the line " ain't nobody gonna steal this heart away" is about how his heart will always belong to her. Don't come for me if I have some wrong 😂 but that's what I remember about the meaning of the song. There are some who side with Jimmy or John saying who sang it better but I think it's just a powerful song sung by two powerful men who both put their own spin on it. It's like comparing apples to oranges IMO. Mossy is the other lead vocal on the cold chisel version and both him and Jimmy complement each other beautifully. Jimmy/ Mossy and John sang it like the boss men they are !!!!!

Steve Prestwich wrote When The War Is Over . But straight out of Cold Chisel when they first broke up in 1984 Steve Prestwich joined The Little River Band while John Farnham was lead singer. LRB was in the red financially and only the songwriters got paid . So LRB doing an rearrangement meant Steve got some money . LRB started to perform When The War Is Over on their Playing To Win Tour of America in 1985 , LRB recorded the song for last album under contract with Capital Records the underrated No Reins 1986 . Steve and John left LRB before the album was released . Capital Records released When The War Is Over as a single at the end of 1986 to cash in John Farnham solo success with You’re The Voice being number 1 on the carts at that time . John recorded it again in 1988 reluctantly because his record company BMG wanted the song as a B side . It end up also being a bonus track on the CD version of Age Of Reason album . John said in an interview he wasn’t keen on recording When The War Is Over again even that he loves the song . But he didn’t enjoy the recording sessions what the producer put him through with LRB . He believed it should be left alone he didn’t need to record it again but BMG talked him into it .

I don't think Jimmy had much time to warm up lol. Loved their comradery. This song for me is about a soldier who is away at war. Perhaps trying to write a letter to his loved one. Only wanting to get home before he get's blown away. (something many service men & women feel when posted overseas) they share their stories and lean on each other for support. Many have to start again when they return as they are a little broken physically and mentally. Another brilliant reaction as usual sir. Love from Australia

I love this song and I’ve always thought it was about soldiers returning from war. Some say it is about a broken love that is likened to war. I’ve never enjoyed any of the renditions of it when both Jimmy and John are singing together because it becomes a scream feast. Don’t get me wrong, I like Jimmy and adore John. This particular version I think is nothing more than screaming by Jimmy and he said in an interview he wasn;t happy with his performance here. If you want to hear the best rendition of this song (and possibly John’s best vocal performance ever) IMO, listen to John, aged 54, singing this at the 2003 Last Time Concert in Melbourne. John sings this song from the heart. Jimmy sings it from his voice box.

If you hear a song that’s from Cold Chisel/ Jimmy Barnes with a theme of war, then it’s a 90% chance it’s about the Vietnam War, which was really controversial in Australia at the time, and the vets were not treated well at the time immediately post war, or for a good 20 years later, and Chisel and Barnsey were really good about highlighting the vets issues, most of whom were transcripts in the first place.

AFAIK, the song is about the aftermath of a relationship that has gone awry after the guy was jailed ("I've got plans for more than a wanted man") and his hopes for a reconciliation after he gets out. It's one of the few Cold Chisel songs where a cover version is as well known as the original. Farnham is a legend and I'm glad you're discovering him! We are in awe also of our wonderful artists that came here as youngsters from the Uk and embraced being an Aussie - they have been happy to be here and have given so much to us with the music industry - this is their home and we know them as Aussie legends 💪🏼🥰🇦🇺

You cut John off at the end. From memory he says to the crowd, ‘ I got an ever bigger kick out of that than you.’ Says it all about how they feel about performing with each other.

Thanks for such a great reaction! Certainly a fantastic collaboration between two of the world's best singers. Love the live shows so much. Jimmy Barnes joined Keith Urban onstage for an acoustic rendition of Flame Trees in Sydney and it would have been such a treat to be at that concert also!

Sadly, John has been unwell and underwent an operation to remove cancer from his mouth and jaw in lat 2022. He has apparently had a jaw reconstruction. Hopefully everything will go well in his recovery...

I hope you can do some more Cold Chisel songs, some of them are also enduring Australian anthems! 😊 John did a few duos with Olivia Newton John too, incredible chemistry and friendship! 👍 Eg: "Somewhere over the Rainbow", John Farnham KZbin channel and "Please don't ask me", Graeham Goblet KZbin channel! Wow! 👏
