FUN STORY: The last use of a Spitfire for combat purposes was at the end of the 1950s. There were border problems in Indonesia, and perhaps Indonesia would invade a territory administered by New Zealand. If that happened, the RAF would've deployed its Lightning jet fighters to the region. Indonesia was armed with Mustang piston-engined fighters. What was the best way for a Lightning to take on a P51? It was unwise for a Lightning to diminish its speed to that of a piston-engined fighter. So the RAF carried out tests against some of its last Spitfires. The best way for the late-fifties heat-seeking missiles to get a lock was from underneath, where the heat of the radiators was easy to find. A Lightning would swoop below a P51, get a lock on the heat source and shoot its missile before zooming skywards again. By maintaining its high speed, the Lightning would never become vulnerable. The border dispute came to nothing and the combat never happened.

If you were being fair, and so that you could see which was the better plane, then you would’ve either changed the modern weapons on the A-10 C, for WWII weaponry, or you would have put modern weaponry(the A-10C’s Gatling) into the Mosquito, because it was/is more than capable of taking the modern rapid firing Gatling gun............. Because the airframe of the Mosquito was capable of handling the shock from a rapid firing 6lb anti-tank gun, which it used against shipping, U-boats and tanks........... So maybe you could make the changes, and see which is better when they are evenly matched, because I am sure that that would be far more entertaining..........

Ps, the Mosquito was by far the safest plane to fly in m, in WWII, and when it was matched with WWII planes, weaponry, then it was safest in the wooden wonder, but against modern weapons, with WWII weapons, then it’s just not fair, and in real life the Mosquitoes would just turn away.........

the 4 x 20 mm canon are so close together that gettin a hit usually means getting 2-4 rounds into the target...the .303 are also tight, but against a hardened target like A-10, well... BTW, the wooden part of the Mosquito lets it soak up quite a bit of fire without fatal damage, as long as the rounds go right through, without exploding...because it's wood, the 30 mm canon fuses may not trigger the explosive or incendiary rounds...
@stinkyfungus
@stinkyfungus 3 жыл бұрын
Makes some sense for the HE rounds - but the API in the Hawg is passive, it works on the physics of DU being pyrophoric in air when divided into a fine dust. (Which happens when it hits something, it sheds material as a fine dust, which auto ignites in an oxygen rich atmosphere. ) no fuse needed to light a DU 30mm penetrator round. It just needs to hit something and shed a bit of material... and foomp! It can start a fire. Nifty yeah? Downside is the dust is also toxic... And mildly radioactive. Its also self sharpening - as that material erodes off and catches fire - the tip of the penetrator forages a new sharp tip as it goes. But that pyrophoric property is why its so superior as an armor penetrator to less reactive, hard, heavy metals like tungsten... tungsten won't burn like DU does.
@hoilst
@hoilst 3 жыл бұрын
I'm wondering if ED modelled that - a lot of HE rounds in WWII wouldn't detonate simply because the wood was not hard enough to trip the fuses.

@@nordoceltic7225 Even then, you just stall/energy trap the I-16 or gun it down outside its effective range. Even if the I-16 attempted to maneuver, it'd be moving so slowly relative to the jet that it would never really shoot out of the HUD. That sort of tight turning circle that propeller driven aircraft tend to have really doesn't matter when they're so slow that they can't dodge anyways. So I wouldn't even say 9/10, I'd say 10/10. The jet only loses if the pilot makes a serious error.

@@howardman3926 In Sim, Hispanos are about as damaging as every other 20mm cannon with comparable HE-filler. The reason why it seems less powerful in ARB or AAB is because mouse aiming allows for far greater range and shot dispersion (because you are firing with a high turn-rate the bullets are correspondingly further apart in impact) and also because up until recently SAPI had a fuze with a delay that was too high. Funny.. There's been much talk about A-10's future. I think the idea Pentagon had about the F-35 taking over that task has vanished. So.. Why not a new Mosquito? With the current light weight materials, compact/powerful turboprops etc available .. A solid landing gear for dirt strip operations. A.. If a Super Tucano were a F-16..this would be a F-15. Just a thought 🙃

I would say if we do go to a new design, it'll have to follow the same mission as the A-10 does, rather then combining missions that don't really need to be combined.

Why would the A10 need to be replaced? Like, sure, replace the individual planes in the fleet because they're no doubt getting old, but for close air support the A10 is still fantastic. Update some things in the design perhaps. New avionics, perhaps better materials, if the "better materials" are in fact better for the situation, maybe updated engines? idk.

This makes me curious. I wonder how the Messerschmitt 262 would fair against the A-10? FOUR 30mm cannons, vs 30mm gatling their both twin engine jets, etc etc. On paper its almost a fair fight. Love the content, Stay smooth!

In the Air Superiority/Air strike/the speed of Heat game series the 4 x 30mm cannon of the Hunter were rated the same as the A-10 (12) though of course it had nowhere near the same amount of ammo and most definitely not expected to take as much damage as our beloved warthog.

The mossie could fly and fight with one engine. Also the mossie had 303 and 20 mm cannon as basic weapon. All bulites went through except a tiny piece of armour behind pilot. It makes no sense when you look at the mossie on paper yet when first flown it just amazed everyone. 🧐👏👏👏

11:32 the guns on the Mosquito are possibly the strongest of any WWII aircraft. With 4 x 20mm and 4 x .303 in the nose that's a strong contender, I personally think the P61 may be in the running as well as it had 4 x 20mm in the wing roots, which give it essentially the same focus as nose mounted weapons. Although they had trouble with it's dorsal turret (with 4 x .50 caliber mgs) they eventually worked that out and that would give it an edge over the Mosquito in fire power. In maneuverability, the P61 didn't use ailerons but rather spoilers to get it into a turn or roll. That allowed it to be able to dogfight quite well.

The reality of the situation is that the A-10 can simply boom 'n zoom and no WW2 aircraft has the energy to do anything about it. Also, the 30mm cannon and modern gunsights far outrange anything from that era so the A-10 will shoot first and hit first.

GS ..Yes In my next video I will be flying a WW1 Sopwith 1 ½ Strutter vs F14 Tom Cat. Both are Navy ship launce based two-seat air defence, intercept, strike reconnaissance aircraft. Also thanks to LongShot for helping with this video. The "Stutter" was 1915 Biwing wire-braced, wood fabric construction. The pilot and gunner sat in tandem cockpits, with forward firing .303 Vickers MG , 1 x Lewis MG for rear gunner. 2 x 65 lb bombs optional Max speed 102mph and could Climb: 10,000 ft/24 mins. While the Tom Cat can fly faster and can out climb Stutter has a better turn radius. Im pretty the Tom Cat will out perform the Stutter but lets see what happens. You can watch some extra video of me and LS in the Stutter on my other channel so thanks and enjoy. Much respect GS its cool to watch skill vs Tech
