Head gaskets are fine. If there was a combustion gas leak, the blue colour of the test fluid would change to a lighter green much more quickly than that (I’ve seen it), plus of course the cooling system would be pressurising like crazy. If there was a leak from the oil system, the oil in the sump would be an emulsified light-brown cream. The brown oily residue in the coolant is caused by a previous mix of red and green/blue type antifreezes. FIAT’s long life red coolant (Paraflu Up) was probably the original fill on this car, but someone has changed it to the other type (colours can vary, it’s the type that matters). The OAT additives precipitate out of the solution in an oily mess, which is diluting your blue dye solution somewhat but has also messed up the expansion tank. Give the cooling system a flush with lots of water and a cleaning agent, then replace the expansion tank and fill with a modern longlife coolant… it will be fine

leave them out in the sun, especially a red one and the UV will do that. Mine had done over 100k and although red it was only starting to develop a little peel in a few places but it was usually in a garage when not used either during the day at work or when not used at the weekend. Nice cars though, just about enough space for food shopping in the boot and you could always use the rear seats for soft luggage or transporting dwarfs, surprising good on fuel when not in city traffic and once you got used to the under steer you could get a wiggle on around country roads while listening to that really great engine. It's a shame they didn't sell the rights to develop and build the engine to Cosworth once they stopped making them.

It's not the miles. Clearly this car has spent it's life exposed to the weather and the old rust has gotten hold. It's 19 years young, so the factory underseal has long gone. Red paint of this age on any car looks terrible - unless kept out of the sun!

surprisingly rust free which is a bonus considering the mechanical bill -- I shall have to get my TS BTV over to you next year for an appraisal - rear qrt panels have rusted through at bottom and inner sills, I am told are bad...then there is an engine rebuild, clutch etc + re bushing, dampers, springs, brakes... paintwork good - engine bay immaculate before lay up - mains were rattling and i think belt jumped.. If i ever do it, quite fancy a n ITB conversion for the sound and to simplify the engine bay - probably go the used bike TB route :) - if i ever have the spare money, would really like the previously mentioned 20V turbo Fiat conversion...or 350z engine would be interesting.....then for lottery win...TVR engine and a RWD conversion?! - My 916 is silver with good red Momo leather interior and feels very special :)

I'd say an Alfa with the V6 Buso engine is about the best bang for your buck you can get and has been for quite a few years although you will need to spend a few quid keeping it on the road as the suspension can be a bit fragile on the terrible UK roads and you won't get the best mpg but you will get a lot of smiles per gallon :)

I just can't bare to watch English cars and what they go through to get to that state. A good thing living in Australia is the cars stay in mint condition for years. My Alfa 156 is 20years old but it looks like its only few years old. No rust, perfect paint and an underbody you could eat your breakfast off! I've never done anything special to it. It's just the climate and roads.

Interesting one. It seems savable but not an easy job. Is it only the head gasket? I recently had to swap the engine block in my Citroën XM Turbo CT when it still leaked after a complete head gasket job. So that points towards a head or engine block leak (It's a somewhat thermically challenged iron block / alu head hybrid). Back to this one: Otherwise it only seems sensible to do if the underside is also liberaly wirebrushed and rustproved to slow the rot down. Why go through all the other trouble otherwise? :-)

If you have a rather heavy driver who makes a habit of letting himself fall onto the seat shoulder and then slide into seating position, a seat will look just like this after a few years. I believe a car reflects the people that used it - and this car will have an idiot's breath for the rest of its life. I prefer paying more for a car that's in good nick in the first place and I wouldn't touch this one with a bargepole.

im always wondering how are cars in UK so freaking cheap, for 2K we can get only some shitty 2.0 TS which is right before death.

Well a good used cup would be over £10,000. That one is not in great shape.

How bad must a car be to deteriorate that much in 19 years and 60k Miles. And what had the owner been doing inside it? Revolting.

I have had it for 22 years, it has always been outside and it is certainly not in those conditions .... I only had the outside repainted because it had lost its brilliance, GTVs do not rust easily. The one you see in the video in my opinion was in the middle of the earth or mud ... but right in the bathroom. :-)

I'm always disgusted by what people do to their own cars, that they've paid good money for, in terms of care and wear. It's not fucking hard to not destroy your own car throughout its life with you, regardless of what it is. How on earth do the seats get like that? Get a vacuum out you lazy c---. Get those broken knobs and fittings replaced, takes half a day mucking around on something you've been utilising overall for thousands of days. Pathetic
