This isn't as much an instructional video as it is a "this is how I do it, follow along at your own peril" video.
In this video you'll see me dissect, clean, polish, and reassemble the hook mechanism on the 221. If you watch other mechanics work on 221 hooks, you'll probably find that I approach this a little differently, that's cool, everyone has their own way of working. I'm not saying my way is the best, it's just the way I happen to do it. I wholeheartedly recommend visiting my good friend Jen over at her "Sewing Machine Rehab" channel and watch how she tackles the same task.
Remember: The best way to learn is by watching multiple mechanics to find the technique YOU are comfortable with doing, or better yet, seeing what you're NOT comfortable doing and avoiding that technique whenever possible!

I was utterly amazed when the gib hook pivot screw dropped into place. I've only ever dealt with a couple of these but both times I had to try over and over and over before I finally got that little screw to go back home. They were like 'You 'spect me to go back in there? Really? What's that wildflower weed you been chewin' on that's made you 'bout half crazy?

It's easier to do when you have a wide expanse of real estate upon which to lose the damn screw... LOL

What is the name of the polishing compound you're using?

I use two different compounds, depending upon the part being polished, and if I'm at the big buffing wheel, or with a rotary tool using a small hard felt polishing wheel or point: Kocour Yellow Compound SS17: I use the large bricks (2.75 pound). SS17 is my go-to compound at the buffing wheel for almost all polished parts of a sewing machine. Kocour White Compound KC11: I use white compound for small parts that are being polished with a rotary tool and a felt polishing point. KC11 is a bit dryer than SS17 and buffing residue wipes clean easily and leaves a very high shine.
