Not to be a nerd here. But this is NOT the Build Engine. Sonic Robo Blast 2 runs on a highly modified version of the Doom engine. The Build engine on the other hand is an old game engine, which was developed by Ken Silverman as an evolution to the Doom engine back in the 90s. This engine doesn't get much use, since it's very hard to work with and really buggy. Most features the Build Engine introduced (like slopes) were brought over to modified versions of the Doom engine, resulting in new engines like gzDoom. This makes it somewhat difficult to distinguish Build from modded versions of the Doom engine.

Sonic robo blast 2 doesn't count as Sega 32X, we'll talk about real actual games. The only way that have sonic in the game is in "Knuckles Chaotix" game for Sega 32X, that is a real actual game.

SRB2 uses a heavily modified version of Doom Legacy. Build engine is the one powers games like Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior and Blood.

Wasnt the Build engine for Duke Nukem 3D, not DOOM?

Yup. Kind of a flub by Cpt. Jack, but I'll let him cook...

Yeah, SRB2 (the PC version) was built upon an (increasingly altered over the years) fork of the Doom Legacy engine.

Great video!! Can you also cover the massive update to Doom Ressurection that is Doom Fusion? It adds in Episode 4, Doom 2, and 5 maps from the TNT Evilution half of Final Doom. It also adds in modding support! Crazy how far it pushed the CD32X!

Even with the necceary compromises that makes this possible, like not supporting slopes or room-over-over architecture as well the hit to rez and FPS this is an extremely servicable port of the earlier Robo Blast 2 game. I'm sure the level designs on some level demands a little bit of rework to run in this port, should they ever get around to give us more but ha this released back in '94/'95, I'm sure this thing could would have been considered a flagship title for the 32X One has to keep in mind that the orirignal Doom levels featured rather simple geometry to make sure the engine could handle it back in 1993 but Robo-Blast 2, even in it's earliest incarnation came out half a decade later where PC specs had seen massive leaps in performance and the level design was made with that in mind. So it's crazy that the Doom Ressurection/Fusion hack is so optimized that it even supports all of this stuff going on, on hardware that originally could barely even run a port of Doom to begin with. It's a marvel of programming skills. I have to admit that I had wondered if a port of Robo-Blast 2 would theoretically be possible with the Ressurection/Fusion engine but It was more wishful thinking and certainly not something I would think we'd actually ever see materialize.

This also means we could theoretically reproduce a physical copy of this game and I know physical diehards would adore to own a copy of Sonic Robo Blast 2. I'm wishing hard here but this just makes me excited for a potential 32X or at least Saturn port of Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart or Robotnik's Ring Racers.

I have no doubt if they keep working at this 32X port I bet they'll get the graphics sharper, with a higher and more consistent FPS. If they can do what they did with Doom on the 32X, I Imagine they could do similar and employ the entirety of the Tower of Power.

It's actually using the Doom 32X Resurrection/ CD32X Fusion version of Doom. It's a Doom port to the 32x, not a ROM hack. Even then, the game engine was heavily modified to make it into a playable version of SRB2 on the 32x.

The build engine was the engine used for Duke Nukem 3d rather than Doom. Although the 2 engines are pretty similiar in terms of capabilities.

It does look like something that would have come out on the 32x. It does look like comparing doom PC to doom on a console at the time.

If you ever get a chance, watch videos of Doom CD32x Fusion running on the "Tower of Power". (Genesis + CD + 32x). It's quite impressive, especially considering that the original Doom port to the 32X had to be played in a window.

It doesn't actually run on the 32x at any type of decent speed. Tried it. Nope.
@andywolan2 күн бұрын
It doesn't seem to run at 30 fps, but it is playable on actual hardware. IIRC, the dev team has to decide what features to keep to ensure performance is still acceptable.
@Ohsyrus3 күн бұрын
Couldn't they just port this to Saturn using Doom in the same way?
