Ahh, remember the good old days when American aviation contractors would make something that came in under budget, exceed expectations tremendously and eventually serve well beyond it's anticipated service life ...
@PaiSAMSEN4 жыл бұрын
It's what Douglas"s design team in general, and Ed Heinemann in particular, were legendary for. Funny thing was, the Skyhawk achieve so much in its service, yet it never really achieve its original purpose - completely replace A-1 Skyraider, which was another aircraft designed by Ed Heinemann. If only we still have someone like him nowaday. PS - Ed Heinemann also play a part in designing the F-16, while McDonnell Douglas was the key designer of F-15 and F/A-18 (before Boeing came and ruin everything), which should explain why all of these exceed their expectations and become total badass despite being a very mundane and simple design. One could only speculate what would happen if YF-23 were picked instead of YF-22.
@2011SoxMD362 жыл бұрын
There's a reason they're still flown by Red air contractors. Goofy lil things and not super maintenance friendly, but they're a damn good platform. This coming from me after 7 years on the F-16. Which in and of itself is a story of success beyond the design expectation, but that's a Story for another day.

I was an Aviation Electrician on the A-4F at NAS Lemoore, CA. When I was with VA-127 (I'm dating myself if you know squadron designations), the Blue Angels took 6 of our best birds for their practice aircraft and left us with their old birds. I made the final deployment of VA-164 (Airwing 21) on CV-19 (USS Hancock), which was also decommissioned upon return to Alameda,CA. Good old birds. I miss them! I may not miss the flight deck too much, but the airplanes were great.

Did the cockpit look the same or is this one a little run down?
@davekisor14865 жыл бұрын
@@Xrm150 From what little I can see, the cockpit layout and hardware were very different. There were no "glass" instruments on our birds. The AJB-3 indicator (the ball) was centered above the distance and heading indicator. The clock was in the instrument panel, the wet compass was to the right of center on the windshield frame. This cockpit is much more modernized.

I always wondered how the owners/pilots maintain these jets. Finding a mechanic that can work on them, parts, where they send the engines for service?
@2011SoxMD362 жыл бұрын
There's plenty of skilled hands with maintenance experience on types like these still around. Now the Sabre and the early MiGs that are still flying, those ones give me the same question. As for parts, there's a fair amount of common components from one airframe to another, a lot of your structural stuff can be shop fabricated IAW the manuals, and ultimately it's just like a classic car. If there's enough demand for the parts, i.e. enough still in flight, SOMEONE will produce those common high-failure or time-change items and make good money dishing them out.
