I have over 1600 hours in the Scooter and absolutely LOVED every minute of it! Flew my last hop (1v1 against my best friend who I grew up with) in the Reserves in 1991. Every once in a while I still dream about flying that thing!! Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

To be honest I rather hear the engine start up and the engine during flight than music. I think most plane nuts feel the same.

I was a marine from 1977 to 1983. A school was Millington, TN. Where I was trained to be an engine mechanic on the GE J52 PowerPoint on A4's, when I reported to MCAS Cherry Point I assigned to flight line (MOS 6013 plane captain) with VMA-AW-533 and A6E intruders. Had a great tour with 533 but always loved watching the Little A4's taking off and landing.

This was my squadron's plane (VA 192, 1966-70). We flew the E and F models and set a bunch of records of ordnance tonnage delivered to target, aircraft availability, etc. Our A-4s were great little bombers which we launched with about 3,500 pounds of 250 and 500 pound iron bombs each upwards of around 35 sorties per day, day after day after day. Generally, we had a "blast" even if we knew, especially toward 1970, our work was not getting us anywhere near a suitable resolution of the mess our politicians had created years before.

One of the greatest and smartest designs ever built, imagine today with our better jet engines and our incredible light-weight materials? We should be producing large numbers of these still today for all our allies. My dad flew 250 combat missions in an A-4. VA125, VA305, and others

I have always loved the A-4 Skyhawk. My father served 26 yrs in the Marine Corps and served two tours in Vietnam, '66-'67 & '69-'70 as an Artillery Officer in the Hills of Khe Sahn & Danang (AZ Territory). He always told me how the A-4 & F-4 did many of ground support missions to save there butts. Kudos to your Maint/Chief and his crew for keeping that aircraft so clean and spotless. What a beautiful aircraft. Thank you for sharing that video.

This specific Skyhawk has an interesting history behind it: "(From MalaysianDefence) ... said: Nice video of one of the A-4L Bu. No.147761 that we allocated for spareparts and left behind in the Arizona desert, salvaged by some resourceful americans and now flying again. If you look closely, this aircraft has never been upgraded into the A-4PTM standards by Grumman. It still has only 3 weapon pylons of the A-4L standard, compared to 5 weapon pylons of A-4PTM. It also has no additional brake parachute fairing at the bottom of the tailpipe." So this SkyHawk started life as an A-4D-2N for the US Navy, was upgraded to A-4L standard, was mothballed at AMARC after decades of service, assigned by the Malaysians as a spares plane but never paid for, forgotten for decades more, and now brought back to life! www.malaysiandefence.com/california-dreaming/ www.aerialvisuals.ca/AirframeDossier.php?Serial=48083

I worked with a guy years ago in the 90's he got shot down in Vietnam got caught by NVA or VC solders he waited till they fell asleep and got away made it to a friendly village where they took him to nearest fire base he said. He said if hadn't gotten caught probably would have never made it because he was able to back track on a trail they were on.

I love the A 4, what a fantastic aircraft! It's a great example of what can happen when all the priorities are right, unlike the abomination the F 35 has turned into. Why America can't ever seen to learn from even our own history and past mistakes I'll never understand but you would think after all the money wasted and failure of 95% of the goals on the F 111 that somebody might have learned that when you try to design a one size fits all, all service. all mission aircraft of you can even manage to end up with a flying aircraft at all the very best you can get is an aircraft that is mediocre at best at everything and master of none and when your adversaries are flying some of the best purpose designed equipment they have ever produced before, while still maintaining their legendary strengths like tough as nails gas and go reliability's, then having a mediocre aircraft to oppose them is a recipe for death and diaster. The A 4 was built for a single role but happens to excell at two because it is a lethal dogfighting fighter as well as world class tough as a boot attack aircraft. The F 35 was designed to oppose only generation four aircraft until at least mid twenty first century. The Russians and Chinese were not supposed to be able to make a generation four point five or true generation fighter until then, I don't know why they were that arrogant especially as the Russians were actually ahead of us in a couple critical areas, Vectored Thrust for both their aircraft and missiles, especially with the missiles it makes them extremely lethal enabling them to manuvre far better than standard missiles making defeating them extremely difficult. Although some American designs now have vectored thrust our missiles do not yet incorporate it. The Russians also held a huge advantage in helmet mounted targeting where the missiles seeker heads are slaved to the pilots helmet so the pilot no longer had to. put the nose of the aircraft on the target to achieve lock and firing solutions, simply had to look at the target in something like a ninety degree cone lock and fire. America has begun to catch up with some but not all F 16, F18, and F 15 fighters so. equipped. the F 22 and F35s come equipped from the factory at least. But the F 35 was not designed to fight the new gen four point five and gen five fighters of which there are now at least five seperate types now flying or soon will be. The Chinese solved their design deficiencies by simply stealing the plans for the F 22, the original version before it was scaled back with reduced capabilities to cut costs. They will build in numbers far greater than we have or can have now as the tooling was destroyed. Too bad we can't do things right like we did in the days the A 4 was created.

They still subcontract them for adversarial aircraft training I'm guessing? There's absolutely no replacement for them. I suppose a stripped Hornet would make an excellent adversarial aircraft. Super Hornet is a pig 🐖 with wings that is inferior to the F14D in every way. Never mind proposed super tomcat upgrade. To run almost 800 aircraft through a shredder so Iran couldn't get a used strut off eBay is literally criminal. If you are so afraid of a tiny squadron of 1st gen F14's why would you throw away 800 of them and stretch the Hornet into something it was never designed for? I am not sure if you have to be running a 408 for that? Does anyone know? The bird in the back is for sale in Controller right now for 1.6 mil. Anyhow let me think 🤔 F14D vs Super Hornet Speed TC Loiter TC Manueverability TC Payload TC Maintenance SH *without glove modification and proposed maintenance reductions. Cheney croney crap caused it. He should have gone to prison. A half a squadron of never completed F22s and fixed wing F14's are the only viable fighter aircraft in the US arsenal. Fixed Wing F14'S aka F15s lol. Really not much difference between the two besides the 14 is heavy duty in comparison.
