Abdul Gafur Khatri, a 56-year-old artisan from Kutch, Gujarat, is a guardian of the ancient Rogan art, a 400-year-old craft with its roots in Persia. Rogan, the art's namesake, is a thick, paint-like substance derived from castor oil and colored with natural dyes. The remarkable aspect of this art form lies in its method: the designs are not pre-conceived on paper. Instead, they are spontaneously brought to life on cloth, flowing directly from the artist's imagination through their fingers. For his dedication to preserving and revitalizing Rogan art, Abdul Khatri and his family have been honored with numerous accolades, including the prestigious Padma Shri, International Craft Awards, four National Awards, three National Merit Certificates, and seven State Awards, celebrating their invaluable contribution to India’s cultural tapestry. #India #Roganart #oil #paint #artist #kutch #clothes
