Thanks to ALL who are the alumni on this, to me, the most influential ship of Vietnam, because our missions were always protecting the Suez to the North Sea! That proves why this ship should never have become “scrap metal”! OUR ship was always ready, receiving 3 “E-awards” on every carrier quals we endured. WE CAME OUT READY. Thank you Captain Tuttle!!!!

@@TheWizardGamez it couldn’t be jettisoned with the landing gear deployed. Internal mechanism design would only allow it to be jettisoned if the landing gear or what remained of it was fully retracted. Or a something like that lol.

We would have rig the barricade drills about once a week at least and it was no simple feat getting that thing up and ready. I was on the Coral Sea med 1985/86 one would really dread doing all those drills but it was good to know that most everyone who was on the flightdeck a lot knew how to get that barricade ready.
@cruisinguy602410 ай бұрын
I saw on another video the barricade was erected in something like 90 seconds. is that reasonable? Seems incredibly fast to go from a pilot declaring "oh shit!" on the radio to getting the barricade fully erected but I'm not a sailor let alone carrier deck crew so have no clue.

I was attached to VA-46 and had just transferred to become a drill instructor pushing boots before this cruise on Big John. But our old sister squadron VA-72 had a bad day. That is why aboard a carrier if you work on the flight deck rigging the barricade drills are essential for this very purpose. That also includes fire fighting drills. That is why you notice everyone was so calm and cool. Bravo Zulu to all my shipmates. Job well done.

@@pontiacGXPfan As I recall Lobster was a department head in VA-46 when I was in VF-14 during Desert Shield. What a great guy! Saved my butt in CAG-6 aboard Forrestal. Had a bad night: 2 foul deck wave offs, then 3 bolters before finally trapping. He tanked me twice in a VA-105 A-7 that night. Tanking off a Corsair was tough in the Tomcat, lotta cross control required. But on a dark night at 1500’ after numerous passes it sucked. However, Lobster was hawking me perfectly. They say everyone has their night in the barrel. Lobster made mine easier. Heard he made Vice Admiral.
