A BAD Resole Job on These Crockett & Jones Chukka Boots | We Refurbish Them Correctly

A customer brought this pair of Crockett and Jones chukka boots into our shop after another cobbler shop did a bad repair job. He wanted us to get them back to their original look, so that's what we did. After adding a new welt, Baker leather soles, and giving the uppers a complete makeover, these boots came out looking nice.

Oh, you'd be surprised how many are still left! Many people, even in this modern day appreciate bespoke shoes. I have a few pairs myself, and frankly, the prices for cobbled shoes over 15-20 years, even including the resoles and such, is comparative in price to getting new shoes every year or two anyway. Now, this does mean you need to maintain your shoes more, like dry and clean (as needed), wax after some use, YMMV, and get the shoes to a cobbler if parts come loose, or you damage your shoes. And well, parts will wear out, like heels or soles. You can replace only the heel, or even just the wear layer of the heel, which is much cheaper. The LARGEST benefit by far, is that the part of the shoes that feels nice and worn in (uppers) need never be replaced, and even a newly soled shoe will fit on your foot like a cozy dream. It's truly a wonder to wear cobbled shoes, and I can recommend trying to buy a pair. Doesn't have to be insane in cost either, you can get good cobbled shoes (not bespoke, though, but still hand made) down to $300-400 dollars, or maybe even less, but I'd watch out for those dipping lower than that.

Getting redress for a botch job like that can be pretty much impossible. I had a friend take a pair of Frye boots to a shop to have a few of the eyelets replaced with speed laces. The guy tried to “polish” the boots and completely destroyed the finish. Since he could hold the boots hostage until she paid, she didn’t have a choice but to pay him for the ruined boots.

These kinds of videos are truly fascinating to watch. I highly doubt I will ever do anything more complicated to a shoe than a perfunctory polish, yet seeing a skilled craftsman working at any craft and explaining it at the same time is mesmerising. It truly makes me appreciate how much knowledge and skill goes into something like this. One thing, however, that I would love to see you talk about are the tools and machines you use. I tried searching your videos for anything on the topic, but I came up blank. Some of the tools I see you use, I never even knew existed, yet they themselves look beautifully crafted for their purpose. Where do you even get tools and machines like that today? Are there niche suppliers specialising in cobbler's tools? A workshop tour or a series on the tools of the trade would be fascinating. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would think so.

This was a pleasure to watch. A brand new pair of bench grade boots is a joy, but a pair of old refurbished boots has an extra level of satisfaction. To take those ragged, abused chukka boots and restore them to that level of beauty is a perfect response to the 'throw away society', and the diminishing number of craftsmen.

I can’t tell you how many times in my line of work I’ve had to go back and put right the lax “workmanship” of others. It’s frustrating to know there are people out there with so little pride in their work that they’d let something like that go out the door in the first place. A pair of C&J’s no less... those boots deserved better and I’m glad to see you get them properly sorted.

Hello! My sister sent me this video, and I just subscribed to your channel. I really LOVED watching you restore these wonderful old boots. What extraordinarily detailed craftsmanship. If I were the customer and walked in to pick up my boots, I don't think I would believe that they were the same boots. You did such an excellent job on them that I don't think I would want to wear them for work anymore because I wouldn't want to ruin them 💙

English chemist Sir Humphry Davy named the element alumium in 1808 and then changed it to aluminum in 1812. British editors changed it to aluminium to be more in keeping with other elements such as potassium and sodium, while the Americans retained the spelling as aluminum. So as long as those US folks spell it without the second i, they are pronouncing it correctly. Unfortunately, in my experience, they spell it the British way, but pronounce it the US way. Tut tut tut lol
