With respect to the lyric: "It kinda sounds like John, Paul, and George". If Sugarloaf had only included Ringo. Then they would have picked up on the reference. Or if they would have reacted to "I Feel Fine" by The Beatles, they would have discovered the inspiration for this tune. Also, they missed the reference to Stevie Wonder's "Very Superstitious". Hence the associated lyric in both cases of; "We've heard it all before". I do give props for recognizing the Wolfman. One out of three ain't bad for their generation.

J's comment about getting back to a group made me realize the difference of the way we consume music now compared to back in the day. Back then you heard a song on the radio then went out and bought the album. That way you'd be introduced to 10 or more of their songs. As you wait for your favorite, you are learning the others. Seems like it built band loyalty. Then if you went to a concert you knew them. Bands from back then are still touring. Cool stuff.

You mentioned the Wolfman and that's one topic that I wish the younger gens could experience, is the shear magic of 70's AM radio DJs. Especially at night in the Winter months when the big 50,000 watt flamethrower signals sprawled out across the nation, all the way till sunrise. Wolfman Jack, Jack Armstrong, Don Steel, Jim Quinn, Don Burnes, from the great stions of the time like; WABC, WOWO, WCFL, WKBW, CKLW, CHUM and so many more that were just so entertaining. There were no radio infomercials, no advertising accounts for Drugs, Doctors, Lawyers, Hospitals, Nursing Homes, not of that depressing stuff. It was all promotions for movies, carnivals, concerts, drag races, Pepsi, coke, fast food restaurant contests, prize giveaways, and the local radio stations were the heartbeat of the city and brought everybody together, like one big neighborhood party. A truly amazing time in America.

This song always reminds me of a friend who played guitar in a band when we were at OU in the late 60's early 70's. His group opened for Sugarloaf (I think the gig was in Enid) in 1971. Tim was big into "don't sell your soul to the man and do crappy "pop" s#!+ - be true to rock & roll." He only knew "Green Eyed Lady" by Sugarloaf so he thought they were not real rock musicians. The next day he was telling me how blown away he was by how good they were just jamming with them backstage. I remember telling him something like "Man, you just don't get record contracts because you are a pretty face or something. Hell yes they can play and rock." Thanks for reviving the memory. Keep on rockin' Tim! Peace out.

Some people think Bell asked for a song to be written with the phone tone sounds in order to encourage sales and its acceptance.

Original name was Chocolate Hair before changing it Sugarloaf. The phone you hear dialed I believe was the White House switchboard. This song was about the band who were basically going nowhere after their first hit (Green Eyed Lady) and after that many of the band quit and they couldn't chart and kept getting turned down. The line "remember the all night creature from Stereo 92" is in reference to the Wolfman.

That trippy chorus with the harmonies that you guys referred to multiple times is a direct nod to The Beatles. The harmonies are almost exact, and Paul McCartney's bass line is very present in the riff that the bass player goes into during that part. And then they reinforce it in one of the verses when he says, "sounds like John Paul and George". It's from their early hit I Feel Fine. Which by the way is supposedly the first intentional use feedback in a studio recording. But anyway, the riff that Sugarloaf references there is literally the opening to I Feel Fine, as well as the foundation of the chorus, and there the vocal harmonies also match up: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/rn2lh5qkj96on8U&pp=ygUXdGhlIGJlYXRsZXMgaSBmZWVsIGZpbmU%3D Finally, what was the recent song you guys did that had the Wolfman in it?! At any rate, one of my favorite top 40 hits from back then is this one by Flash Cadillac and the Continental Kids, and it heavily features Wolfman Jack. It's called Did You Boogie With Your Baby? If you haven't done it, I've been following you guys since the very beginning and I absolutely know you would totally love reacting to this, from the mid-1970s and quite the radio hit for a moment: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/q3_WdGaHfs2EhMU&pp=ygVKZmxhc2ggY2FkaWxsYWMgaW4gdGhlIGNvbnRpbmVudGFsIGtpZHMgd2l0aCB3b2xmbWFuIGphY2tzb24gZGlkIHlvdSBib29naWU%3D

It was huge on AM radio and we all loved the references (Wolfman Jack, The Beatles' I Feel Fine and Stevies Wonder's Superstition). The riff was infectious and we could all recognize it after the first few notes. There weren't any other hits from them that I can remember, but Tongue In Cheek was released as a single. Definitely check out the full albums version though, not the 3:45 single. Their first album has more tracks than Green-Eyed Lady that you might like. I've digged this song since I first heard it on the radio. It's a story of a band trying to make it in the music industry. They call and call and call and get the same response: Hey kid, don't call us, we'll call you. Then, after the Wolfman spins their record, they hit the big time. Now everyone is calling them, and the table is turned: Don't call us, we'll call you! And the riff ripped off from the Beatles song (that they give the nod to in the song itself - that you guy's seemed to have missed) is brilliant. Sugarloaf nailed it on this one!
