I’m a 3rd generation retired residential sheet metal craftsman. My father was licensed here in San Francisco, California for 56 years. He only had a sheet metal contractor’s license but we did HVAC as well. The roofers here don’t care about what is being vented and they install the flashing with a standard bonnet top. Duravent was replaced with type B Metal Bestos and I would caulk just above the flashing before putting on the storm collar. We only have the B vent penetrating above the flashing and then the collar goes over the B vent down to the top of the flashing. We’re not in an area such as you where the temperature falls below 40 degrees. Very interesting method much different than us on the west coast.

Our houses gas vent has loads and loads of black caulk on the flasher. Because of that, now the caulk is cracked and looks bad.

Really explained well. . I'm getting a small leak around my B-Vent and plan to replace all the parts. Can you recommend a place to purchase the B-Vent parts, flashing, counter flashing, etc. you use.

Gary Nice job! I have a couple questions. What brand of ice and water under payment do you use? Also, the 2 flashings you use are they the same size?

There are many good peal and stick underlayments that seal screw and nail penetrations. The most flexible is StormGuard, our favorite overall is Tarco PS 200 which has a tough surface protector. The flashings are the same size, and due to the slight separation provided by the underlayment thickness, they fit together well. Thanks for your question, GW

Mary, thanks for the question. Out and around Austin, most are painted, in the older part of town, for example, N. UT Historic District, we do not paint them very often. When we paint, we use real primer and paint so they last. Have a blessed day!
