Sea Level rose by quite a bit. If you look at the intro and bits of the first episode where it shows NYC, there are massive barrier walls erected all around to keep the water out. Some of the existing city was reclaimed by the ocean.

It sits on the banks of the East River, but from there she would have to walk across the East River, then across 8 miles of Brooklyn to get to Coney Island. That is the closest point of ocean from the U.N. It's far more believable that she walked to the southern tip of Manhattan and was actually looking at N.Y.Harbor, which is a tidal estuary, but *not* the ocean. Still a long ass walk. About 8 miles.

I love the clear symbolism of the ocean shots. When we first see the ocean, the camera is behind Bobbie looking out at the clean clear water, one of the most beautiful things she has ever seen. Then the camera moves to reverse the shot, we see Bobbie sitting on the beach and you can see that the water is filthy and full of trash. Bobbie's perspective on Earth is changing based on her experiences in this episode. Love it!

In one of the earlier episodes, the Martians said they look down on Earthers because they are lazy and don’t work and instead waste their lives away with free drugs while relying on the government to provide everything. Once on Earth, though, Bobbie learns that people have to rely on the government because there just aren’t enough jobs to go around.

That and... they're not actually lazy. They're wanting to do things. They do in fact do things... even if its within a shadow economy. But as noted, they have limited options. Even in this world of abundance there is scarcity that the propaganda doesn't account for.

Another point they fixed cliche in the book when they rewrote for tv - Errinwright storyline here is very different, and they made it more mature, complex, dynamic, and real for the show. Just the fact that the authors recognize what didn’t work and chose to make it better, incredible.

@@SciFiCatGuy Could be, but it could also be that the UN campus has enormously expanded in the interveneing three centuries to the point that it covers a sizable chunk of manhattan and the Martian embassy is actually close to where you can see the ocean. Regardless, the point is that she's never seen a vast open stretch of water and she has polynesian ancestry, so there might be some longing there from stories she was told growing up.

This show is my all time favorite sci-fi TV series. Very little sci-fi elements in this show. No phasers, no warp drive, no force fields, no artificial gravity, and no teleporters. Just enough sci-fi to make it interesting. Very plausible sci-fi. Such a great show.

It's a shame that most "sci-fi" TV shows and superhero movies makes people think that _that_ stuff is "sci-fi". Sci-fi is science fiction, but most shows labelled as such nowadays have almost no science part in them, and the fiction is uninspired.

@@internaut4257 I never understand this viewpoint. Yes, Earth will survive as a planet. As a physical body. But the life on it might not. Everything coming back better than ever? All species that go extinct stay extinct, and we are currently causing extinctions that we're not even aware of. We are serving as an artificial bottleneck, and there is no guarantee that life will bounce back "better than ever." I think it's pretty dismissive of our impact on nature to think so, unless you're the type who thinks that nothing we do can really change life on this planet. Yeah, these disappearing species can't be important, right? Massive buildup of pollution and eradication of valuable habitat is no big deal. In the larger scheme of things? We're doing just fine.

This shows supporting cast of characters is just so good. Cotyar, Prax, Drummer, Errinwright all so real and fleshed out. You understand their views and motivations on stuff. No one is is just "evil" or "good", Errinwright coming forward when he knows the shit has gone too far is ace.

Elias Toufexis, the actor who played Kenzo, the spy with the eye, did a cameo for another KZbin reactor channel, "Funny Lil Gal," and told how he had originally auditioned for Amos. He clearly didn't get the part, but they liked him enough to create the character of Kenzo. He said that normally, he might harbor some resentment and animosity for the other actor who got the role he wanted, but as soon as he saw Wes Chatham, and how he played the role, he knew that they made the right choice. Wes *was* Amos Burton.

As an aficionado of spy lore (from the historical to spy-fi), I immediately glommed onto Cotyar from his first appearance. It was as if his independent intelligence officer with a Robin Hood complex being compelled into choosing a side was purpose-built for me to instantly love him. And Nick E. Tarabay plays him to perfection. I was already impressed with the show but Cotyar Ghazi sealed the deal for me - especially with his “It’s nice!” dialogue in this episode. A moral man in an immoral business is just my cup of tea.

Except that Holden's starting to lose his grip. Eros is still fresh in his mind, he's just seen people dying of hunger, trying to eat decorative plants, and this guy, hoarding a massive amount of real food, is refusing to help him reach his goal. Amos lost it and, in his own way, so did Holden.

Don't forget the Holden has radiation induced cancer, too. He takes medication to keep it at bay. That and the stress of what they're doing takes a toll. I think when Errinwright saw Mao created a humanoid he realized how far Mao would go. Everybody has a different line. Which kinda leads into Naomi's statement that every push at the line makes the next one that much easier. And finally, ain't nobody stopping Bobby from doing what she wants.

The walls surrounding the NYC coast are built high. And there are 2 possibilities of where Bobby saw the ocean. 1. A proposed situation where they build lower Manhattan out to to stretch out a bit. Which is a real plan up for discussion. 2. The embassy is on either New Jersey or long island (queens/Brooklyn) which I I think is more likely. Because of the space needed to land crafts. Makes more sense if they are near one of the airports or the open field areas. Or the current or former military bases.

Hi Kids, I haven't read the books upon which the series is based, but some of Nerdy's attempts to rationalize his knowledge of NYC geography with the scenes from the show can be fairly simply explained. As far as I can tell from the show, the UN Building hasn't moved from its historical spot on the East River. Nerdy's problem was that he thought Bobbie and the rest of the Martian Delegation were residing at the UN. An earlier episode (when the Martians landed) clearly indicated that they would be staying at the Martian Embassy. The Embassy could be at any number of unspecified locations within the Greater NYC area so there's no reason to believe its location would be in Mid-Town Manhattan. It could be within walking distance (for a Marine who trains in 1G.) of the Atlantic. Judging from the pathetic wave action of the ocean, I suspect the Atlantic Ocean was played by Lake Ontario. You may have seen Lake Ontario in real life, NOT playing some other large body of water. The Expanse series was filmed in Toronto. - sj

Clarus : The reactions you have for every episode of this show are unique and a interesting. That is in no small part due to the great writing of the show. When it comes to something like Attack on Titan, where the same plot point is stretched over multiple episodes, giving a repetitive reaction is hard to avoid. Nerdy : I don't think it is ever spelt out in the show, but I personally believe one of the big requirements for Mars gaining its independence was being self sufficient. This doesn't mean they don't require Ganymede but they are not as dependent on it as the Belt is. The writing in the Expanse is some of the best sci-fi over the last decade, and I've seen a lot of sci-fi! One of the only shows I've ever seen where the writing keeps getting better from start of episode 1 to the final episode of season 6.

But, the book describes her understanding of how incorrect her assumption was, based on her experience of Real Earth gravity vs the Martian 1-G training. She realizes there wouldn't be much of a contest at all, and that most Martians, even those that trained for it, would be defeated by Earther's upbringing Ina 1-G environment.

16:48 I am not familiar with New York City so much, but if you recall in earlier episodes where the New York skyline is shown, you see the Statue of Liberty is below sea level but not submerged. There are dams/dikes keeping the statue and the island from being underwater. From that, Im guessing the sea levels have raised and maybe the water is closer to her than previously assumed. Also, that Martian compound/embassy is large and may not exactly be THAT close to the UN itself.

Why would people who've clearly never been there want to debate stated geographical facts they k ow nothing about. I've lived there. I drove a taxi in the city and shown real estate all over lower Manhattan. Yer people who've nevr laid eyes on the U.N. building feel the need to argue a moot point thay k ow nothing about. As I've said, MULTIPLE the setup really doesn't matter to anyone else in the world except for me, Nerdy, and maybe 3 other people. What I find hilarious is the number of people and the extent that you guys go to rationalize a simple error or detail ignored. It's worth pointing out that Martian Marines train at 1g. I think MCRN ships might also accelerate at 1g by standard so they should always be used to it. They do this specifically so they're able to invade Earth if needed, from their inception both the MCRN and MMC were created to fight Earth. Also, swimming shouldn't be harder in higher gravity (up to a certain limit, of course) because the water you displace with your now 3x heavier body also weighs 3x more so you should be just as buoyant no matter what the gravity is (up until the pressure and temperatures are high enough for water to become supercritical and loses the boundary between "under" and "above" water, though I think swimming in water above boiling temperature presents new problems unrelated to gravity).

@@Mansplainer2099-jy8ps As far as I can tell, yeah, gravity only affects how much things are attracted to the ground (and, therefore friction when they're sitting on a surface) not how much energy it takes to move them horizontally. You can think about different gravities like being in an elevator. Higher gravity is like going up in the elevator. If you're carrying something heavy, (say a box of rocks for the celebrity that lives in the penthouse) going up in the elevator won't make it any harder to move around horizontally, just to lift.

I love your discussion at 23:00 about how TV shows often "pass the stupid ball around" in order to move the plot and/or provide exposition to the audience, and this show doesn't do that. Indeed, this is a common trope. On the website TV Tropes, it's referred to as the "Idiot Ball".

I like how you framed that "this show doesn't add drama" because it does A LOT in comparison to the books. Holden purging and then logging the distress call on Cant, Amos shooting Semi, Naomi keeping the proto torpedo or Errinwright's whole arc and much more is added drama and didn't happened in books. BUT! This show just add all these so naturally (it might be that writers of the books are part of the production team ;)) that you never doubt it happened. So yes, it add drama but it is necessary for a tv show and it always feel adult. ;)

Why we watch The Expanse reactions is that you react to this show as we did the first time. A gut turning, heart pumping, thrill ride that keeps paying off each episode. We all bring are emotions to the table, and feed adrenaline to each other. Be who you are and don't fret about what the audience thinks. The best reaction videos are couples and mix groups. You two are doing great. Keep going the payoffs will be fantastic!

The interesting thing about people like Mao -- people with power who aren't part of a government -- is that you can't really say that they're "Earth", "Mars", or "The Belt", because that distinction only goes as far as their loyalties lie. I can be a Canadian but do bad stuff on behalf of a foreign entity in North Korea, government or not. Same goes for a powerful Earther when his Earth contacts aren't putting up their end of the deal. If all he wants is money and power, I don't think he really cares where it comes from. The fact that it can't be boiled down to three big factions fighting each other is part of what makes such good writing. I couldn't agree more about how great the characters' behaviour is. It's (more or less) rational, and trope-crushing around every corner. I found it so refreshing, and constantly surprising, on my first watch through.

The fact that you guys keep saying the show is "great" and that you love the characters and their development, just testifies as to how good the show actually is. As you've noted, you haven't seen a single bad episode (and, FYI, you won't), and the characters are genuinely written as complex and believable human beings. So, we all know that stuff, but because we agree we won't give you a bad time about it. That said, the reason we watch reaction channels is because it's a blast to see you guys try to figure out what's happening, knowing how close you get, or how badly you flub. 😁 Then, when the payoff comes and the show gives you a reveal, it's fun to see you realize how much sense that makes, and why you came so near or missed it so badly. For instance, Errinwright knew what had happened was a protomolecule-based weapon system test because Jules-Pierre Mao had been working with him to create exactly that. The two men had a falling out, and Mao went looking for a new sponsor to fund the research he felt would save humanity from a terrifying alien threat. Clarus' observations about Chrisjen were spot-on. Avasarala does really terrible things for the best possible reasons. 😀

This episode indicates the storytelling style where they periodically pay off some explanations to some of the subplots but then introduce new mysteries to chew on in the same breadth. I agree with you about the characters written on this show. People are reacting to information in believable ways based on their own perspectives and motivations. People on this show are not doing bad things just because they are evil, they have provided them real backstories and reasons for their actions.

"I didn't realize Jules had already seen a proto-person" One thing this show does rather poorly is illustrate properly the passage of time. MANY MANY MONTHS pass between some episodes, and it's never really communicated to the audience. The time it takes for Bobbie to travel from a moon of Jupiter to Earth, months and months. A substantial amount of time has passed between when Dresden found Julie and told Mao, until now.

That's an intentional choice. Making the time skips concrete and defining the actual time that is needed to traverse these distances becomes both a distraction to the audience if something doesn't line up and handcuffs the writers by forcing them to always keep it in mind. Keeping the time scale soft and unspoken circumvents that without really losing anything.

They don't illustrate the passage of time, but it wouldn't necessarily take many months for Bobbie to travel from Jupiter to the Earth. Jupiter is 5 AU from the sun. Let's use that distance, and not worry if it is 4 or 6 AU from Earth (and that the Sun isn't in the way). A ship with a constant thrust of 0.2g will travel that distance in 10 days. (The Epstein Drive changes everything.) Since you don't want to fly by your destination, it would be roughly 7 days accelerating and 7 days decelerating. If they have to ration fuel, maybe it is only 0.1g, which would make it one month. (And given that this is a vital peace conference, they wouldn't be sacrificing speed to conserve fuel.)

Remember that Mao, once his man Dresden found the pm on phoebe, sold this whole enterprise to Errinwright (who probably knew about Eros generally but not the truly afwull details) as a weapon first and foremost to keep a "shadow government" backing him up and to protect him from any legal or civil consequences, while he focused on the Eros experiment, the thing that he really cared about. It makes sense that Errinwright knows exactly what attacked on ganymede and has the sales pitch for it: HE was the one for whom Mao had that pitch made!

The only real thins you repeat is how great the show is. Which is understandable because it really is. It’s a show that starts a bit slow but as with Eros once it gets going it just gives you the Juice and goes for a hard burn. It has so many twists and turns you never know where it is going. You guys do a good job of keeping it interesting and your reactions are genuine, educated, and from someone who loves sci-fi. The character development in this series is one of the best in Hollywood.

And then he runs a major multi-planetary corporation so that Dresden and Strickland could have been working independently of one another. And from my viewpoint, the Caliban was released on the UN troops, and when it overran the Martian position that was just collateral damage, as was the destruction of the mirror and its aftermath.

That said, I only found your channel and started watching when you started releasing the Expanse videos, so I've been watching each episode as you release them. Your timing was perfect as I has just finished book 2 for the first time and thought perhaps I should re-watch the show (again). I haven't yet watched your other videos, perhaps I'd get the Nerdy-isms if I had. By the way, have you considered reacting to Orphan Black? I recently started re-watching it in anticipation of the sequel. I only mention it because it is another great scifi show that I feel highlights (or plays with) the morally gray vs straight up wrong.

They did move the scene from where it is in the books. in the books this scene plays out in the The UN International Court of Justice, which has its seat in The Hague ( the book suggests the UN headquarters has moved there too ) . from the current building of the International Court to the sea side is 3.2 Km (1.9 miles) walk. Not taking in account any future sea level rise.

We are loving your reactions. Thoughtful and deep. BTW, the writers of the book, that go by the pseudomim of James S.A. Corey (Daniel Abraham and Ty Frank) are also part of the writer's room. They are also Executive Producers of the show...at least by Season 3 onwards. Cannot remember if they were EPs before in S1 & S2, but they were always in the writer's room...writing episodes. Ty Frank was the one that built the world in the books, while Daniel Abraham was the dialogue and character's person, but one write primarily James Holden and the other wrote Josephus Miller (and in the editing they tweaked the other person's work), so by the end, they had written the whole, without much deliniation of who wrote what. The book series is complex, too; while the TV Series melds certain characters together. The further the show goes, the more characters are combined. I love both the books and the TV series. We have been watching these reactions weekly, but to my wife and I (who have seen the TV series multiple times [4-5], and now dozens of reactions of it. ATM, we are watching one reacter who is still in S1, while watching your S2 reactions. In fact, we JUST watched her reaction of S1:E6, then immediately pulled up your reaction of S2:E10. We love this show SO much...and we REALLY appreciate your knowledge of the industry and RL knowledge of being on set for other shows, that the other reactor knows NOTHING about. Her reaction is pure, just watching it without any extra knowledge, while the two you bring other industry knowledge, and your personalities (btwn the two of you) are so different, but you come at a scene or a character in unique but also similar ways. You, generally love the characters that you are supposed to love (like Amos), and despise the characters that you are supposed to despise (like Chicken Man). If at some point you want a bit of backstory on Amos I HIGHLY recommend reading the novella The Churn, you can get through it in about 90 min to 2 hours. You can do it at any time but after season 4 before season 5 is the best place thematically to read it.

I suspect a large number of the people watching your reactions are people who have already watched multiple other reaction channels in addition to watching the show themselves. One of the reasons the writing for The Expanse is so good is the fact that almost ALL of the characters are morally gray, and the ones who aren't still have believable motivations. Just like Thanos in the Avengers movies - EVERYONE in this series believes they are doing the right thing from their own perspective.

The supporting characters are so good in part because they get great actors to play them. Next season they add an actor (a former Oscar nominee) who has become stereotyped into playing tightly wound buttoned down types and let him play a role that is anything but that. I've not seen him interviewed about it but I bet he had a blast playing so against type.
