A Beautiful Mind is one of the few films ever to suggest that the life of the mind can be as exciting and intriguing as any thriller. Based on the story of Nobel Prize winning mathematician John Nash, the film's subtle but masterful cinematic technique puts audiences inside the mind of a troubled genius when he begins to question reality.

As much as I love TLOTR trilogy, I really think a beautiful mind deserved the Oscar. Is one of the best movies I ever seen
@88mphsss
@88mphsss Жыл бұрын
I'm fine with it for the fact that it's a complete movie. I know there are fans who feel Fellowship is the best in the trilogy and should have been the one to represent it in this category, but I feel RotK brings the trilogy together more than a Part I that is open-ended. Because what if they'd given it to Fellowship and somehow the rest of the trilogy sucked? Or was never released! It does feel weird to have a movie that relies on 2 other movies be the winner because it feels like having a homework assignment, but it just feels more complete that way since the whole trilogy could be assessed and is likely why it was rewarded that night with all 11. I'd heavily consider trading Ron's directing trophy for Russell winning though, or maybe even a percentage of the Picture award. Brian says it was close but I dunno if that's a joke since I guess they used to reveal second place or maybe even all the rankings. I can't imagine that card has enough space to list all those percentages though. 🤣

Very well! Lord of the Rings is considered to this day a masterpiece, it is one of the most popular movies of all time. Its subject amtter is very complex and Peter Jackson handled it masterfully. The Lord of the Rings is my favorite series of films, but you can't get mad about the Fellowship of the Ring loosing when Return of the King took 11 oscars 2 years later. They couldnt just award the movies three years in a row so they had to choose which movie to shower the awards on. A Beautiful Mind was a great movie and the 2nd best choice behind LOTR. I enjoyed Moulin Rouge! but it's way too polarizing among viewers to win Best Picture.

I love A Beautiful Mind. It's touching and has wonderful performances. But it's a weak Best Picture winner. I would have loved to see Mulholland Drive get at least a nomination (and win). LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring just didn't win because they wanted to wait for the third part and reward the whole trilogy (what I can understand in a way).

Memento was released outside the US in 2000, but released inside the US in 2001, the same year ABM was released. Also, Memento was nominated at this ceremony for best original screenplay (and somehow lost to Gosford Park), therefore, it should be eligible for a Best Picture nomination here.

Well, I can't argue with that. But even if the Two Towers wasn't nominated for Best Picture in 2002, Chicago winning Best Picture was a DISGRACE (just in my opinion). I mean, the Pianist was vastly superior. I haven't seen either Gangs of New York or the Hours, but I've heard that they were much more deserving as well.

I am the only one who think that neither A beautiful mind nor LOTR: The fellowship of the ring deserve to win. Oscar should have gone to "Mulholland Drive" one of the greatest movies and stories i have ever seen. It is also a best movie for screen writing point of you. Now a days it is considered among the best movies in past 15 years by many critics and film makers and got more critical acclaimed than that of any other LOTR movie but it was not even nominated for best picture that time.

I COMPLETELY agree with you! How can you compare The Lord of the Rings with A BEAUTIFUL MIND? Its quite petrifying! A beautiful mind was a profound piece of work and through my life of watching many films, I have NEVER seen a more beautiful movie! There are many, who still have not met the maturity level, in which is needed to truly understand such beauty which was portrayed by this film!

Have you seen FOTR, there is not a more mature take on characters and relationships than the members of that film. Do not speak as if you are the authority on maturity levels of the general public, it is quite unbecoming

I agree there aren't many movies based off fantasy books that have shined besides LOTR and Harry Potter. I just think that when A Beautiful Mind and Chicago won over LOTR 1 & 2, the Academy was just giving other movies, that were also great, some recognition as well. I liked A Beautiful Mind because it was well directed with lots of depth, and Chicago was very good too. Plus I think that the Academy was waiting to reward Return of the King and they did when it swept the Oscars in 03 and won 11.

These were maybe one of the worst Academy Awards version ever!!! How “A Beautiful Mind” could be named the “best film of the year” when masterpieces such as “Mullholland Drive”, “TLOTR”, “Memento”, “Black Hawk Down” and “In The Bedroom” were made this year too. Such shame on an always play safe Academy.

I think the whole point of the movie winning was that it was about a heavy subject being shed light on. The fact is schizophrenia is not talked about even today it is a very taboo topic. Maybe Fellowship should have won but it wasn’t a realistic story and so relevant.Besides I don’t know what ya whining about because the return of the king won big time two years later.

@@ronaldmcdonald2817 No shit Sherlock. My point was that it wasn't a story that people related to on the same note that A Beautiful Mind did. Yes, Fellowship is an amazing film and an even more amazing book. Tolkien is one of my favorite authors. But, that being said, I was merely pointing out that A Beautiful Mind is on a more serious tone, with real issues.
