You know, back then, I thought LOTR winning 11 Oscars was perhaps an overkill. It was just a very well-done fantasy film to me. Now, I'm almost 36 and I think it's a movie where beyond the disguise of fantasy, you get a solemn, deep tale about the loss of innocence, the absence of perfect heroism and the price one has to pay for being forced to stare into the abyss for one moment too long. How once you do that, you're never the same again. It just happens to take place in a fictional world with fictional creatures, but the story is more poignant than many "serious" movies. There are some hard truths told in LOTR, some which can bring a tear to my eye after I've experienced life from more angles than just a teenager. The whole trilogy was so obviously and overwhelmingly good, such a rare achievement, the Academy simply had to push aside any of its preconceived notions and preferences, and simply give the awards to this obvious winner. They were earned, there was just nothing else to do really but to cave in and say - "yup, give every fucking award possible to LOTR", we shorthanded these people the previous few times a little bit, now it's time to give them every accollade they can get. And no one in the audience could argue really, or think "this should've been me", because well, it shouldn't have been anyone else. And it's not a shame to lose to a movie where the entire crew experienced their creative zenith at the same time. LOTR is special, ROTK is special and the awards underscore it. It's one of the times Academy got it right.

Just imagine what was on Tolkien's mind when he envisioned LOTR, the amount of horrible memories he had of his WW1 experiences. PJ's "the Lord of the Rings" is the best film ever made. No, I won't say "return of the king" because it's not really three movies. It's one movie, that's like 10+ hours long, so they had to cut it and split it. Just like Tolkien's book, which was originally one book, that had to be split into three because they wouldn't print it so big. It's one and the same story, that's shot and made all at the same time. Return of the King got all the glory because it was a grand finale of the entire story. But the buildup is what made the finale great. All 3 movies got these 11 Oscars in my opinion. "there's a reason why the say best motion picture for LAST" You heard that academy? Spielberg said that.
@Choekaas3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Fun fact, in the 30s and 40s they often handed out the Acting awards for last. They did Best Picture last in '45, but not in '46-48. However, they realized over the years that it was fitting to have Best Picture last. Such as in '47 when the papers reported to anticlimactic ending with: "Fontaine settled the highly contested Best Actor race: the winner was Fredrich March for "The Best Years of Our Lives". March was in New York and his Oscar was accepted by Cathy O'Donnell, who played Harold Russel's girlfriend in the movie. And that was the show" and the year after it was reported that audience members were starting to leave the theatre after Best Picture despite having the acting awards left. So they actually have done a different format and learned that it doesn't work. Looks like they have completely forgotten about the failures of the 40's.

I just watched the extended edition of the trilogy and also watched a few extras on the DVD (behind the scenes, filming etc) - it's very easy to see why the movies were successful - the amount of effort and attention put into the project was mind boggling. one example - They made real weapons, armour, prosthetics etc for the armies on screen and a lot of the combatants shown on screen were real people - this has certainly helped in keeping the realism - the movies have aged really well even 20 years on! Another thing to think about - the total budget for the trilogy was $300 million - it's incredible how they managed to pull that off ! There probably won't ever be a production like this again - seeing how the movie industry has gone CGI crazy nowadays.

Peter, we want to see those deleted scenes, unused for the Extended edition of the Lord of the Rings : - Fellowship of the Ring : additional footage from the Battle of the Last Alliance (and maybe add Lee Pace’s Thranduil into it), an extended Council of Elrond (dialogue from the Council of Elrond, such as Gandalf explaining how Sauron forged the One Ring) - The Two Towers : Arwen and Elrond visiting Galadriel at Lothlórien, Conversation between Elrond and Arwen in a library in Rivendell, after Arwen decides to wait for Aragorn. Elrond leaves saying “You gave away your life’s grace. I cannot protect you anymore” - Return of the King : further epilogue footage, with endings for Legolas and Gimli, Éowyn and Faramir's wedding and Aragorn's death and funeral. Also, to give context for Wormtongue killing Saruman, and Legolas in turn killing Wormtongue, it was to be revealed Wormtongue poisoned Théodred. The final scene cut was Aragorn having his armour fitted for the Battle of the Black Gate by the trilogy's armourers, which was the final scene filmed during principal photography, and others. We know you stated that you would like to include some of these unused scenes in a future "Ultimate Edition" home video release, also including out-takes. It would be great if you would be able to revisit the cut of all 6 movies in the near future, do an "ultimate cut" of the 6 movies and integrate those scenes I mentioned back in the movies (instead of deleted scenes). You would also be able to reshoot the "Bilbo finding the Ring" scene from Fellowship of the ring, replace gollum from the shadowy scene in the Mines of Moria (from Fellowship), add more Balrog vs Gandalf fight (as you wished in the first place when you thought about the sequence but you didn't have the means and budget for it at the time), integrate Thranduil in the Battle of the Last Alliance, etc. (as did George Lucas with Star Wars afterwards). Cheers! :D

I personally think The Fellowship of the Ring was the best one from the trilogy, but all three movies were not much different in quality. The Desolation of Smaug is almost on par with the trilogy. I think There and Back Again has the potential to equal or even surpass the trilogy, if it's done right.

David Desolation of Smaug is not even close. The Hobbit was brutally mishandled by Jackson.

Phantasmagoria In a video I saw that (according to the channel) they gave all the prizes that a whole saga deserved, when it was over. So, probably, that's why the return of the king won so many oscars

There's "winning best picture" and then there's "WINNING BEST PICTURE". After the entire journey they went through making this trilogy, and after being snubbed in the two previous years, there's a best picture oscar trophy right there in Peter Jackson's hand that actually feels like it is well earned. You breath a sigh of relief yourself when you see them winning it because you acknowledge the inhuman amount of talent and hard work that was making these movies. Most well deserved oscar of the last 20 or so years, if not ever.

Most deserved, lol, alot of Awards are deserved. You just watch too few movies

It had some very stiff competition not like it was an easy win

I don't think they were "snubbed" necessarily. I think the voters knew the ROTK was going to win best picture, and seeing as how they knew it was basically one long movie, they didn't want to give one movie three best pictures even though they were definitely deserving of it.

Oh, Oscars. Miss the days where the good movies actually win.

the fact it was a FANTASY movie that did this incredible achievement speaks of the absolute film masterpiece TROK (and the trilogy as a whole) is. I and millions of other fans will be forever grateful to the wonderful team that gifted us with such an amazing experience.
