Since we've been diving into some Nier music, let's listen to the highly requested A Beautiful Song from the Nier Automata OST. By now I'm starting to see a pattern... Nier music always seems to be way deeper than what I initially presume.

I was 100% sure i was supposed to be a sad depressed and disturbed person while playing... I certainly was. This is definitely the only game while playing that I just audibly went "what the fuck man this is so fucked up". That feeling is at it's peak during route C. NieR replicant kind of replicated that feeling a tiny bit, but I never felt so bad for what was going on as like I did in Automata. It's mostly due to how the games pace the story and how suffering is exponentially raised in Automatas story as it goes, whereas replicants plateaus early in route B. Replicants is like a sudden flip of script like "oh no what have I done" when the narrative twists itself, and automatas is more like "please I just want someone to be happy!" As it aggressively gets sadder and more depressing. Yoko taro directs his games to be very disturbing and uncomfortable in general. Zero stabbing the shit out of 5, 9S stabbing the shit out of the 2B hologram, mentally I see those scenes as the same just with different meanings because of context. Then there's stuff like 5 getting cut in half vertically, Adam getting stabbed in the top of his skull with a broken sword. Yoko taro is really good at making hurting another being feel wrong and disturbing.

The machine's name is Beauvoir. As in Simone Beauvoir, famous french philosopher. They lament the lack of affection from their beloved, another robot by the name of Jean Paul. As in Jean Paul Sartre, famous french philosopher. The real Jean Paul and Beauvoir were in a relationship, of sorts, and appear to have ghost-written for many of each other's works (so hearing her take on a male voice in the mix is no accident), but it seemed Sartre had a different idea of what their relationship meant than Simone. This is reflected with their machines.
@ManiakGrik
@ManiakGrik 2 ай бұрын
Fun fact, as a French, the robot's name, in our subtitles, is Simone :) Playing the game with Japanese voices, you just taught me its name is Beauvoir in English. Maybe it is Simone in French to keep a layer of mystery about the character since Beauvoir would be terribly obvious for French people ^^

About happiness and sadness: it runs deep in Nier. Weight of the World - the conclusive piece to the game that I'd recommend reacting to last - is one of the saddest songs I've heard, and it's purely, exclusively in major.
@TheBestestKitty
@TheBestestKitty 3 ай бұрын
I'll explain the context around the character and the song, but before I do that: I very much recommend doing Shadowlord from NieR Replicant. Now: This song plays in the battle against a bot named Simone. Its full name is Simone De'Bouvoire, named literally after the French Feminist Philosopher. The bot's character is a half-corruption of the actual person. In love with another bot, who is taking after Jean Paul Sartre, Simone De'Bourvoire's real world lover, she's trying to be noticed to gain his affection. This is because, like the real life version, Sartre had many, many girlfriends. So, in order to gain his affection she starts consuming the bodies of Yorha androids and using them to rebuild and remodel herself. This is the corruption of the identity, as the real-life Simone instead fell further and further into misandry, projecting out all the flaws she saw in Sartre onto men in general. In both cases, Simone is an incredibly miserable character. It is important to note: most characters in NieR Automata take directly from some aspect of philosophy, but, the game itself doesn't make a commentary on it. Rather, the plot is a commentary on the human condition and how people search for meaning in their lives. The different tracks fall into these categories of meaning or, in one's case, the lack thereof. That track is helpfully given the subtitle of "despair".
@littlekitsune1
@littlekitsune1 3 ай бұрын
Without getting too much into the plot, the main characters are all machines trying to find their version of happiness. It explicitly says happiness can be sadness and vice versa - and violence can be expressing joy etc, because the characters have no basis for identity that a human would. So yeah, the music is all very back and forth in intent and feeling, just like the characters can't find what true happiness or sadness is. Edit: The singer is a woman. I'd also recommend "Possessed by a Disease" for more of her great vocals.

What I've always felt about the opera boss and her theme is all about obsession, she is chasing after her former glory and recognition, never ending suffering from loss of who she was, who she though she was, and something she'll never be the thing she wants again. So she finds joy in the agony of others, it feels like she's the doll playing with the agony of others, absolutely dreadful. It's her decadence that makes her a monster, the themes about her and how she became what she is when you fight her, how utterly terrifying she is for 2B and 9S to face her and hurt the androids, you can't help but feel pity and despair to free them from her, angry and helpless that the only thing you can do now is destroy the opera singer and end their suffering. I always break when I hear this song, it's so powerful ! And it's an optional boss if I remember correctly !

Indeed. I approve of your comment. Im a big fan of nier automata. Also what you did write makes it even more special. If you think about that the game narates this human concept and gives you the chanche thinking about the meaning of life. And this makes it very special to me at least. Not only depressing. But. Also just to find meaning in life. Which almost all important characters in the game try to find. Or found it.

@@DaviVasc Simple Answer? Play Nier Automata since its the best Standalone experience. Long Answer? Technically the series started with the Drakengard games and Nier is a continuation of the final ending in Drakengard 1, but not only are they rough gameplay wise but also have some really twisted themes that may not leave a good impression of the fact its all very story rich. There is also the previous Nier game Replicant (or Gestalt in the US) which got a remaster after Automata, but its still a lot grindier to get through and reach the "true" ending. Speaking of Drakengard, there are some real bangers in that game aswell since its the same composer as the Nier series but they used a lot more Guitar in it. Highly recommend "Two's Song" as a prime example of it.
@terracannon876
@terracannon876 3 ай бұрын
@@DaviVasc Nier Replicant or Gestalt is the first of the Nier series. There is a remastered version available for this called NieR Replicant ver. 1.2274487139. I would suggest starting from there for story and writing reasons. Nier Automata is the most popular game of the series, but it is the second game. It is fairly standalone, so it's possible to start here instead. There were be allusions to the first game, but if you don't know them it won't harm your experience. Nier itself is linked with the Drakengard series, but it isn't necessary to play those to understand Nier.
@letao12
@letao12 3 ай бұрын
I agree with starting with Nier Automata. Technically the games in the series are connected but you really don't need the whole context to enjoy any individual title. The game does a pretty good job of explaining sufficient back story to make perfect sense. The only thing you'd miss is historical lore, and I do mean historic, like things that happened thousands of years before the game starts. To get the whole lore anyway you'd have to diverge out into companion media like mangas/novellas/audio books/stage plays etc. which is a big stretch.

It's like an opera song. A cool thing about Automatas songs is that they use a sorta made up language I think was called "chaos" language or something. But basically it's several languages meshing together like it's something that will inevitably happen in the future. I love the nier soundtrack. The whole thing feels very "tribal." Having grown up in Alaska, among the many tribal groups there, it feels quite familiar. The strong underlying rhythm is VERY tribalistic, along with the changing of the emotional content. With much of the music I heard from my friends growing up, the understanding of the songs THEY grew up with, is very strongly based on the re-telling of old adventures -- whether the stories being told are of victories, or failures. When I think of the old term "bard," I often connect it in a newer way, to the hearing of those historical chants, that keep the old stories in the forefront of the lives of the newer generations. That's what THIS music feels like, to me...a warning, to be sure...that could be good or bad...depending on where the "player" is coming from. Regarding the singing ranges ... for most of my life (from the time when I was barely school-age in the early 50s, until 2006) I had just under a 6-octave range. In choirs, I often was asked to "run (teach) the parts" for all of the different songs we sang, because I could sing them all. By 2006, rheumatoid arthritis had gotten hold of me very strongly, and I was bent far, far forward, with my knees bent as if I was sitting, and my hips bringing my torso way forward--leaving me not much breathing room. For over nine years, I was no longer able to sing ABOVE a low tenor range, and was mostly confined to baritone and bass. In 2017, both of my hip joints were replaced, and now (at age 74) I am able to stand and sit upright again, and have been working on getting at LEAST back up into a 2nd soprano range. I have officially reached that again, and am now working at getting my highest register back into play. I can STILL sing bass. If you listen to Geoff Castellucci sing (with VoicePlay) "Sleeping in the Cold Below," I can sing and sustain the lowest note he sings in that song. I can HIT, but not sustain Tim Foust's lowest note in his range (A-0). So...yes...that solo in the game could DEFINITELY be either a man with a high range, or a woman with a low range. There are MANY people who can make that crossover and still carry the "quality" of the original placement along with the crossover -- your brother being one of them, of course. 😀 THANK YOU very much for this very interesting reaction to this fantastic sampling of NIER background music!

It smoothly transitions from one to another, depending on the situation. If you search the OST for this game, you can find each state tracks separately, or their compilation in a single one. Hey Davi. I've stumbled upon your OST reaction and breakdown videos recently, been a bigfan since. Would you be willing to listen to some Persona 3 Reload OST? It's a game that has come out recently and it has some really cool banger songs, but also some tracks that seem to me (as a musically ignorant person) to be really impactful and meaningful, like "Battle Hymn of the Soul" or "Living with determination" and "Living With Determination -Iwatodai Dorm Arrange-" or almost any other track from that game. Would be really glad to hear you react to them and maybe break down why they feel that way? Anyway, really like your videos, cheers :)

Davi Vaasc, I am here to request to you that you should do League champion theme reactions, they have some amazing things you could explain to us in your videos, My personal recommendation would be God-King Darius theme first, **He's a champion but that's a skin dedicated to the champion with its own Theme so please check it out** Much love.

Hello, Davi. I hope you're doing well. I would like to recommend a song that you might like to react to and analyze. It's the one from Dragons Dogma: Dark Arisen, Daimon's 1st and 2nd phase theme. I hope you read it

I think Replicant music > Automata music, but Automata music + gameplay + autmosphere > Replicant's. Secondary quests in Replicant are such a barefaced grind... In Automata I got at least intresting theme of robots trying to copy|be humans as a reward of quests. I hope in Replicant it will change (whom am I lying to?) as I continue to play.

Hello. I am enjoying your videos as I translate them. Is it okay if I make a request? If not, I am sorry to pollute your comment section. Do you know the game Ar Tonelico? There are many good choral songs like the one explained in this video. Ar Tonelico EXEC CHRONICLE=KEY Ar Tonelico2 EXEC over.METHOD SUBLIMATION Ar Tonelico3 EXEC FLIP ARPHAGE These are the titles of the three songs I especially want you to listen to. Sorry if the English is strange.
