This was a brilliant lesson, Paul, muchas gracias. How you wrap so much learning around a single verb is almost magical. I just watched this lesson for the second time to really lock it in. For anyone debating whether to purchase the full course, go for it! It is without a doubt the best investment I've made for myself in recent times. My Spanish comprehension has grown exponentially and I'm still going through the first level - highly recommended.

I am a big fan of Paul's teaching style. I have purchased his full course and I am completely enjoying it. He has a way of teaching that actually sticks in your head and has corrected some bad habits I picked up along the way with my studies. For example, saying constantly yo, tu, el, ella, ellos. I was never quite sure how to leave them out of sentences, then realized it was making my sentences sound really weird. He has a wonderful, logical approach. So glad I found him!

Just to make things clear, extrañar will ALWAYS take the infinitive when you are talking about missing doing something, whereas English always takes the gerund. NEVER say, for example, "Extraño saliendo con mis amigos." The only correct way to say "I miss going out with my friends" is "Extraño salir con mis amigos." And when you think about it, "I miss not seeing you"/"Voy a extrañar verte" is a rather weird construction, because you're actually implying that you were happier when you WEREN'T seeing me. In other words, you're really saying the same thing as "I DON'T miss seeing you (and I hope I never have to see you again!)."
@gerardomendozas.47266 жыл бұрын
Hola amigo. The verb "Extrañar" as any other verb in Spanish can be used either the infinitive or gerund, it all depends on the situation. Let's break it down. You mention "Extraño salir con mis amigos" = "I mis going out with my friends". "Extraño" Is "I miss". Now "salir" in this case is used with the infinitive because in Spanish we only use it in that way. So we don't say "Extraño SALIENDO con mis amigos". In English, I can tell, you can say either "I miss going out with my friends." or "I miss to go out with my friends."

It depends on how much time you put in everyday im 18 without classes in real life my dad being 100% El Salvadoran so no wasting time getting the accent 2 hours a day for 1 month got me completely fluent in conversational español and half the vocabulario
@gerardomendozas.47266 жыл бұрын
Nobody can be fluent in two months. No matter what language is intended to learn. Even for babies that are verbally "virgins". It takes years for them to be fluent in their native language.
@MineChitect5 жыл бұрын
why not pasando tiempo? since it is in the present progressive?
@brad53875 жыл бұрын
to pass time = pasar tiempo. And when using extranar we always use the vereb in its full form
@rreed871394 жыл бұрын
I was also wondering why we didn't use trabajando or hablando. Is there a way to know when not to add the ando in place of the ing, or do you just have to remember not to use it with extranar?
@Jack22003 жыл бұрын
Because in English "spending" is a gerund when used with "to miss", "to like", etc. which makes it equivalent to a noun. Extrañar in Spanish requires the same infinitive form of verb to follow it as similar structures with "necesitar", "querer", "gustar", etc.

Confused with "I miss talking with you". Why is it "Extrano hablar contigo", and not "Extrano hablando contigo"? I thought "talkING" was "Hablando".
@newagemaeday53617 жыл бұрын
He has taught before that some words "take the verb nicely" so changing it is not needed. But excellent question though. There other courses using other words and the same is done. The official reason why would be explained in the actual paid course I'm sure.
@jamestozer50707 жыл бұрын
People do not speak that way in Spanish. The gerund ("ing") is not used nearly as much in other languages as it is in English. In Spanish it only refers to something that is currently in the progress of happening.
@lpr52697 жыл бұрын
There are only certain verbs that take the Gerund after them in Spanish. Seguir/continuar haciendo algo = to still be doing something or to keep doing something. Also with acabar and terminar to mean to end up doing something. Terminó/acabó pasando todo el día allí. = He ended up spending the whole day there. There are also expressions with IR, ANDAR, VENIR that use a verb in the gerund form after them, but that is about it.
@gregpaul45166 жыл бұрын
Porque extraño congegates the verb beside ir
@gerardomendozas.47266 жыл бұрын
Because "ando" and "iendo" at the end of a verb represents the gerund which is used only for a progressive forms. "Extraño hablar contigo". In Spanish "hablar" is the infinitive form of the verb, therefore is not used with the gerund as in English. In English you can say either "I miss talking with you." or "I miss to talk with you." Well, in Spanish we only use it like in the second way, which is the infinitive.
