Thank you so much for doing a talk on this subject. It may sound strange but I also find a pressure to change my skin colour. I am white and find fake tan and sun beds are bombarded at me. As if to be attractive and classed as healthy we need to be tanned. I know this is not in all countries or areas. And the crazy thing is is that the comments of being pale come from other white people. This doesn’t make sense. My daughter also struggled with her skin colour when she was younger as she is mixed race. Now she is older she sees how beautiful she is and is proud of how she looks. I wish so much that no matter what colour someone is that we could all embrace it and see how beautiful everyone is and to love ourselves as we are.

dotn compare yourself with her. the amount of disrespect , abuse she received for becoming miss usa, and being indian by the Americans was unbelievable. she was made to feel so horrible, she didn't have the courage to stay in the field of beauty. as a white whatever you are, you may have pressure to tan, but never will you get the kind of hate she received for holding an accolade for whatever country you are from.

Yes.- both skin whitening & tanning industries are billion dollar industries that sell opposite and opposing messaging. The standards are always changing, but forever unattainable.

My oldest daughter has an extremely curly hair. Growing up in Japan, she constantly tells me that she wants her hair to be straight so she won't have to do anything or nobody would care about her hair. I told her having straight hair is so much harder to set her hair and she would have to manage a lot more. Also, there are Japanese ppl who are willing to pay so much to have her kind of hair, while she pays none. I tell her not to be ashamed to have curly hair, but she won't listen. Hope she realizes that she's special when she's old enough.

Thank you for sharing this - I felt the same way. My hope is that by sharing my journey on beauty standards, this helps young people define beauty for themselves! You can find more of these conversations about my hair journey on my KZbin channel. Sending a big hug to your daughter!

Beauty is everywhere.. And that's the reason you won. If we do our best why someone should judge us? We are all unique and if we follow world's standards we we'll be just a copy. Show your best, show your qualities no matter what.. Cause there always be someone saying it's not enough... But we are unique, not a copy.

@@Nina.Davuluri heyy nina!! just watched the whole video and it made me realise beauty is not from the inside but from the outside as I was so concerned about my asymmetrical features I have , my height(I am 5'10) as being a short woman is considered beautiful and attractive by men ... your video was wonderful , the way you explained everything theres more importance to a person just than his/her beauty

One thing I must disagree with you on, you're not Indian. You are American, but a descendent of Indians. I'm not saying to ignore your heritage, values or customs of your parents. Embrace them, carry on their legacies. One thing Americans have to learn, is that we are not Indo-American, African-American, Mexican-American, Italian-American, etc. We are all just Americans, plan and simple.

I find you absolutely perfect as you were for this talk, Nina. I love your curly hair. And, as a self-proclaimed high heels aficionado, your shoes are very stylish. But...I really woulld have liked to see you in stilettos. I'm going to do a Google search on you - maybe I'll be lucky and find some great photos. While I'm typing this message, I've just heard you talk about therapy and self-worth. But why do you need therapy? You have the incredible good fortune to be one of the world's most stunningly beautiful women (on a par with your "sister" Priyanka Chopra). ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

I don't think it is neccessarily true that when someone knows better that they(automatically) do better.

What is the main theme of this presentation? We are supposed to feel sorry for someone who is pathologically preoccupied with superficialities of human phenotypes? Do you not realize that you are part of the problem that perpetuates the toxicity of "societal beauty standards"? In the mean time, two African American teenage girls from New Orleans are the first mathematicians in at least 2,000 years to find trigonometric proof for the Pythagorean Theorem.
