I caught a flight out of Auckland, New Zealand to Asia, where I discovered that a beer costs $59. But it isn't quite as bad as it sounds.

I live in Cebu City and we aren't the biggest fans of Mactan. Overpriced resorts and the beaches aren't that great, no public beaches all controlled by resorts now. I do recommend "Cafe Cappuccino" and The Mactan Newtown has a grocery store near you. We enjoy exploring Bantayan Island, Camotes Islands, and the Chocolate HIlls in Bohol using Cebu City as a base. You would probably love "man made forest" in Bohol if you haven't been already

I really like that hotel in the beginning. I liked the glossy wall panels they used, which are smudge resistant. I also liked how they staggered the rugs in the hallway, instead of making it just one long runner. It looks cool and I'm sure it's easier to repair too.

Food recs for you to try, please, that everyone likes which are not weird like balut I ate and the strong kidney flavoured bopis 1) You cannot lose eating ADOBO, the Philippines national dish! I recommend trying pork adobo then chicken if no pork is available. 2) Lechon MUST NOT BE MISSED. It is the crispy, fried pork skin and well, nice pork meat underneath. Just call it roast pork with crispy skin. Yummmm! It is served with sauce which can be a thin au jus, over rice. 3) Lumpia which are like egg rolls. And, good and popular. Chinese people brought them to the Philippines. 4) Kare-kare a lovely peanut stew! Yum-my, too! 5) Sisig is great and you can ask for the fried egg in the center to be “hard cooked” so the egg is not all runny and gross! 6) Silog is very popular at breakfast! It is crispy fried garlic rice paired with eggs and a meat of some sort. I recommend longanisa those cute little bright magenta-coloured sausages! LAST ONE: Oh and please go to Joliibee and try Filipino spaghetti made with banana ketchup, please!

Take Filipino food for instance: When I shop at Seafood City here in the Seattle area (Well, about 13 miles south of Seattle in the Southcenter mall) I ask all the Filipinos about their food and kinda don’t let up. Same thing in Hawai’i. I speak their pidgin dialect of English pretty fluently and just let ‘er rip! Mind you, I get da stink eye and looks that say this: Tryin’ Auntie, tryin’? (Meaning, you’re kinda laying it on a bit thick, aren’t ya?) I overkill speaking pidgin and patois (Jamaican especially) dialects which result in eye-rolling and laughing at me at my expense, but … whatdyawant? If faut essayer as my French teaching kept saying, which means you must try! 😊

You should stay in IT Park and visit Magelans Cross and the nearby basilica and the National Museum. Go to the Segue Hotel and eat at the 17th floor rooftop restaurant. Eat breakfast at Joliby Chicken rice and an egg for 169 peso with drink. Enjoy all the sweets and food. IT park and all the food options. I was there for 6 weeks.

Be very interested to hear about your experience using Expedia as an OTA. Do you use it frequently? Does it work seamlessly for things like checked baggage, seat selection on line check in. Most OTA in the airline space have bad reputations unlike say those same providers for hotels. Enjoy the Phillipines

Expedia works great, it's super quick because all my info is stored in my account, usually you can select your seats and add baggage and they have good customer service.

I stood in some really nice places in makati an area of manila! Paid around 26-27 a night for beautiful apartments. Cebu was definitely more expensive

To be fair, it was the best choice, Aberdeen. It's what I'd have picked anyway.

Hi Gabriel, I'm quite surprised going to the Philippines that caught me off guard for some reason I'm thinking of a change in plan. It is one of those locations that attracts a lot of ex-pats this should be remarkably interesting.

Hey, Gabriel, you do a lot of walking. Do you have a go-to shoe or sandal for all your travels or do you just buy whatever is available and feels good?
