Not for a beginner but I would like to have a request. I play flute for years but not as a proffesional, I have played Devienne methods. After these I only played songs or partes from the musicals. Could you give me an advise about what to play, how to exercise? I finished methods so people say me play the songs you want but I feel like I can find advance methods to keep practising, because when I practise with only songs I can not practise certain things, they are not common as thrills. The signs like ~ etc. can not be found on common songs so I started to forget signs. How can I practise I look my old books sometimes but they are not satisfying.

What other beginner flute topics would you like me to cover? Among other flutes, including the concert flute, I also play the fife flute and pan flute. Do you have any encouraging comments on these two flutes? 😖
@joelhirsbrunner19975 жыл бұрын
Why didn't you mention the shift with the chin when going into the octaves, to get them to an actual octave. Since faster air alone will let the octave seem to be too small
@frankgreene57275 жыл бұрын
Not a flute guy but you were in my cue and you are funny. If you are looking for topics, Adam Neely (also a youtuber) did a video on the difference between classical and other types of musicians. That might be a good topic from a classical musician's perspective.

I actually learned to play the flute in middle school back in 1981. My mom had me rent a flute because she wasn't sure if I would stick with it but after a few years it was paid for. I played throughout high school and was involved with marching band which I loved. As I got older I played less and less until it just sat in a closet. Because of all the moving around I did, it got left behind accidentally. Last year I found a good deal on a new flute but since I haven't played in like 30 years, I have to start over and relearn. That's why I'm watching this video.

I just would like to THANK YOU for this video. My 10 yr old brought home his flute today. His father and I have never played any instruments, we had no clue on how to help him learn to play the flute. Your video has him playing a few simple notes and even Mary had a little lamb, in less than an hour. He's so excited and really proud of himself. He even asked to spit rice everywhere.. 😂 but thank you so so much. The pure joy your video has brought to his face knowing he can learn from your videos is priceless. Plus mom is learning how to help him too. LoL .. I always wanted to play the flute but never had the opportunity. So him and I are watching your video and I'm learning by watching him. I'd love to see a vid focusing on how to control breathing on the flute. I'm an adult restarting the flute after 20 years and I find it hard to control breathing and this vid made me remember how difficult it is to control breath on the flute. Thanks for the video, Katie!
@DoctorFlute4 жыл бұрын
Breathing is a tricky aspect on the flute. The reason it is tricky is because we flutes have no resistance whereas other winds are blowing against something. We have to create our own resistance. In a nut shell that is done by breathing while expanding both the stomach and the rib cage. Then when they are expanded you tighten the muscles and control how fast the air comes in. This creates that resistance which supports the tone.

This is a very sad and a happy story. When I was in fifth grade the teacher called for those would be in “band” to go to the band room. I was so excited!! I went too. When we arrived the leader began handing out the instruments. When it came down to it, there wasn’t one for me. HMMMMM!! Dumb 5th grader. I didn’t know that your parents had to be in on this and purchase an instrument for you in advance. So, I taught myself to make up songs and play the guitar. When I was around 21 I bought myself a 12 string Yamaha guitar. By then I had been married, divorced and had two little boys to raise, so money was tight. I learned how to play pretty good though and loved it. I married again at 23 and taught my new man how to play guitar. He grew up playing an accordion and could sort of read music. I taught myself theory and we had a great time learning together. When I was about 40 a dear friend of mine who played piano gave me her old flute. It was in need of rebuilding etc so it stayed put away. I was recently cleaning out a closet and found it. I now could afford to have the necessary work done on it, so I did. My family now plays drums, (my son) acoustic guitars, (myself, hubby and sons) electric guitars, (sons and hubby) accordion, (hubby) flute (daughter) and now, I’m going to learn the play flute. I’m going to start my learning session with this teacher. She speaks my language. I’m 69 now. And still loving music!!

I’m glad it worked out in the end! I hate how some places you have to have your own instrument to join band. I’m lucky, the school systems near me have instruments that are owned by the school and are lent out to students for the years they are in band at the school. The catch is you don’t get to choose your Instrument, they ask grade 6 students who want to join band in grade 7 to write down the top three instruments they want to play. My friend and I both got our top choice at the time, clarinet, and both were in the same class at band camp. Grade 8 I auditioned for saxophone but got a bass clarinet (I had no clue what it was). Now fast forward to high school I still play bass clarinet and enjoy it more than in junior high, I also got a tenor saxophone a few months ago, and just rented a flute from a local music store to try out for a month. I’m wanting to buy a bass clarinet before I graduate high school that way I have at least one of the instruments I currently play. There too expensive to buy both bass clarinet (3k) and a saxophone (2-3k) right away, especially since I only work part time. Flutes are cheaper though, so if I get the hang of playing the flute and want to continue with it(I probably will) then I’ll look into buying one, probably a second hand one from the music store for a couple hundred.

This was a great crash course and answered a lot of things I forgot over the years after buying a new flute recently. Played flute and oboe from 6th-8th grade (32 now) but was trying to remember the slower-faster airflow part about the octaves. Luckily I didn’t forget the lip positions and can still remember at least half or more of the fingerings and can still get clean sounds. Tonguing and articulation on flute is another thing I need to work on too that was explained well here. I was also an advanced saxophonist at one point, but decided on getting a flute again for apartment building noise levels. Thank you for this video!

@katieflute5 жыл бұрын
Hi JoAnn!! Hmm that's a great question! I don't think I would have a drastically different approach to teaching someone who already plays another wind instrument- especially in regards to learning the flute embouchure/how to make a good sound, etc.but if I were teaching them privately I could see us moving more quickly through the process of learning the different note fingerings, and they would certainly have a head start with the whole breath control aspect!

Long-time guitar player, decided (no idea why) to learn to play the Irish whistle, then the Irish flute. Of course, that led me to want a keyed flute! So, I buy a book to learn to play a keyed flute, and it tells me how to read music - oh, and sort of how to play an F and an E but I can't tell exactly what fingers go where - this flute has a lot more going on than the Irish flute does, I am lost! I can already read music. I needed to know how to put the flute together, how to hold it, what keys to press to get what notes. Grrr. I stumbled across this video and I'm sending the stupid book back. Thank you so much for really useful information -- I learned something today! Wow excellent video, My primary instrument is guitar, but after inheriting a flute from my sister and later my daughter when they both lost interest in it, I played around with the flute from time to time. The last couple of years I have been trying to get mire serious with the flute by teaching myself, but have been frustrated with my progress, these basics you went over are a huge help, especially about just holding the flute. Thanks so much for this video

I barely started the flute like 3 months ago. Every edit I make I will name a piece that I have learned. Edit 12/14/19: I am learning alla turca, I learned half of it. Wtf is a trill??
@-vlyxx50055 жыл бұрын
good luck with it!

A trill is where it goes down a half step or up a half step, I havent trilled in awhile, and you go back to the original note very quickly.

whenever i see a flute related video, i get reminded of when I was learning the flute a few years back and one day i walked into class after picking up a few papers for a teacher (normal school class not my flute classes or whatever you think) and this guy had his mouth on my fcuking flute that I had put on my table like 3 minutes ago

Why do people keep confusing the flute for the recorder?!
@greenfloatingtoad5 жыл бұрын
A recorder is a fipple flute and historically the word flute could refer to a recorder or a transverse flute
@greenfloatingtoad5 жыл бұрын
It's a very old confusion I guess

I know right???? Even when the clarinet just looks like a more complicated recorder. Who knows the idiot that thought a recorder looks like a flute
