Farid Sabet My problem also. I'm going to mention the channel I used. It was a Martin string promotion probably no problem with that but his ( the Martin tech guy had a system where I had 1 wind) I got to pitch but I'm waiting to see if it holds. This fellow is really thorough I may cut my loss and open new package 😩 but future changes will definitely be this. Ciao I also like the 1 year change schedule.

Excellent and comprehensible how-to video. Better than others in that questions are anticipated and answered before one knows to ask them. For me, the diagram of the ball end seated against the bridge plate answered a question I had by showing and explaining how the bridge pin works. Other stuff is demonstrated and explained precisely, patiently, and clearly. The bookmarks also help to go back over explanations. You're a professional teacher. Others are not. Thank you. You Saved me some misery.

I have often been surprised that people don't seem to know the technique I have used for decades now to remove the string pegs. I used to have a teaspoon in my guitar tool kit and it worked fine, but then I discovered that by far the simplest way to remove string pegs is simply to push the string back down the hole. Grab the string say half an inch from the peg, hold it vertically above the peg and push it down. As soon as it moves the peg can be very easily removed using your finger and thumb. I hope this may be helpful.

Thanks for the tip Patrick! Depending on how long the bridge pins have been in place, the exact manner in which the pins fit and the material they are made of this may or may not work. I have found that plastic pins generally come out quite easily but bone pins can often be very stubborn.

This was very good and thorough, I watched thru it all to see if I had ever missed anything while doing my basic guitar maintenance. While I was familiar with this information, it was a very good video for someone who knows nothing about string changing or guitar cleaning. An inexpensive item I've come across that I thought I'd mention, that I really like having, is something called Mitchell's PlateMate. It's a little rectangular strip of metal (brass maybe?) that you put inside your guitar on your bridge plate to prevent the wear and damage that the balls on the strings do to your plate over time. Highly recommended!!

I have seen some KZbin channels say, 1:02:41 if you have a piezo pickup on your acoustic electric guitar you should not pull all of the strings off to prevent the pressure sensitive piezo pickup from becoming unbalanced from string to string. 1. Do you use your guitar on an amplifier? 2. Have you noticed some strings being louder than others when using an amplifier?
@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions Жыл бұрын
The guitar in the video uses a multi-element piezo pickup system which is quite resistant to the problem you are referring to. I have found that string to string balance issues with undersaddle piezo systems are typically caused by the bottom of the saddle not being completely flat and/or the bottom of the channel in the bridge where the saddle sits being uneven. If you are concerned about this happening then I suggest restringing starting with the D&G strings and working outwards from there to ensure that pressure on the bridge saddle and underlying pickup is even from side to side.

This is a wonderful video! I watched all the others, but they left something to be desired! This video answers all the very small little technique questions I had! I will try cutting the strings first, now that I have more confidence! Its the "Post measurements" that I was having difficulty with. NOW I see exactly how to measure! I WAS going to buy a "Bit" for "power winding"....but now I see, I really only need a nice "hand winder", just like this! I like these strings too....The colored ball ends, those are the strings that came on my guitar....I changed them to elixirs, but those feel incredible heavy. I'm going back to these Daddario's.....they were much easier to play! I am also going to buy one of those "headstock supports". To help hold the guitar steady! Thanks a million.....GREAT VIDEO....I learned a LOT!

Its the little bits....like, the little bend you put in the string before you put it into the bridge....that make all the difference in the world. Otherwise, the ball end gets stuck on the bridge pin and does not end up against the plate underneath. (you really got to be careful there). I was also having a problem getting the ball end to sit against the plate in the proper orientation. The bend also helps with that, (as in the diagram you show). I find you also have to measure VERY CAREFULLY, or you'll get that wrong, and you don't find out, till the string is coming taught....that you've either measured too long or (horrors) TOO SHORT! IF you measure too short....the FUN is ALL done.....start over! Also....YES, that Low E string....is a monster....always wants to back itself out of the hole as you wind! I am going to restring all my guitars again...using your method, I am so impressed!

Oh also the little BEND you put at the tuner....helps tremendously to keep the string from backing out of the hole as you wind! Very important!

Correction, smaller gauge strings require less tension, not more. Remember That! Also strings put on guitars by the manufacturers are usually lower quality that are bought in huge lots at a premium. Most retailers will put on a new set for free when you buy the guitar. They will give you a choice of string gauge you want and on higher end guitars will give you coated or upgrade types.

John McClinton Good info,but how do you know what brand factory uses. I have Guitar Center I deal with but employees are bunch of numb nuts trying to appear as experts. Quite easy to spot em BUT they will lie to cover ignorance or manager pushing certain brands. I choose D'Addario coated strings, I use light gauge for various reasons. Easier to barre at least in my case. Less tension on neck also.I'm far from expert but this guy seems to be very credible, I feel comfortable with his views. Cleaning solutions not necessary he's getting kick back good for him but plain soft cloth very little winded does well. I have taken marks or light scratches out with Turtle Wax scratch remover its cheap and uses same ingredients has more expensive Just go slow and carefully. Never wax guitar body or fingerboard. Impedes sound hand made classical guitars use no clear coat other than tung out.

Very thorough and comprehensive for this beginner; thank you! One question: Since camera doesn't show, when you measure your new string are you keeping it taut from the bridge pin up to the neck? That would seem to leave a lot of length to cut off, which again, I can't see. On the other hand, if not, one and up with many more winds than two. Why would manufacturer make strings that are so much longer than necessary? Seems wasteful, if I understand correctly how much to cut off. Thanks.
@Shellison1
@Shellison1 3 жыл бұрын
May I add that when I do pull taut all the way from the bottom, I only get about one wind before reaching the desired pitch. I have an Alvarez, not a Takamini. Is there a difference?
@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Shelley - yes, when measuring the new strings, keep them taught from the bridge up the neck, and make sure that they pass over the saddle and nut. Manufacturers have to accommodate many different guitars with varying scale lengths, bridge positions and string securing methods, hence the extra length in new strings. All guitars are slightly different, so if your Alvarez only gives you one wind, then allow more excess - perhaps 1.5 or even 2 posts past the one on which the string will be wound. You'll soon work out how much extra to allow after a couple of tries.

Well... I finally "settled" down on my choice of strings! I am just about to re-string my favorite guitar with: Elixir Polyweb, 80/20 bronze..... 11/52..... "custom light". Seems to be the best choice for me! My friend....who is a touring professional guitar player told me...."THESE" are the best kept secret! He told me that he is sponsored by another string mfg....and they GIVE him strings....BUT.....for his OWN guitars.....HE BUYS Elixirs! The .10's are really just too light....They play very well...but that Hi E string....feels like a piece of thread! I have changed my mind also, on the "Coated or Un-Coated"....When I first played the Un-Coated....I realized...."finger noise"....(the zipping sound as you slide your fingers up and down), was AWFUL with the UN-Coated.... On the other hand.....Coated..... really mutes that sound quite well. They are much "slippery' er" ..... And slide really well! By the way....I found out why the Gorgomyte cloth gets SO black when you use it! I used mine on a brand new guitar and it got very black too.... Its the REACTION with the chemical and the metal of the fret wires. JUST like if you polish some silver that dosn't appear to be too corroded or "TARNISHED"....the polish rag gets black right away. It always happens as a result of the chemical reaction with the nickel silver. There must be some kind of "silver polish" in that rag too! Well, I have watched your video above several times now....I pick up something new each time! GREAT VIDEO.....Thank you so much.....I for one, REALLY APPRECIATE this tutorial! I've bookmarked it and I refer back to it often!

Yes....you are totally right....Coated strings are GREAT! I absolutely LOVE working on my OWN guitar now! Thanks truly so much....your video benefited me a great deal!

Maguire's #9 is the best polish to use on guitars, IMO, even though it is car polish. I've used it for years and absolutely NOTHING makes the guitar shine better than it. Simichrome is what I use to clean the frets and other hardware of caked on dirt, tarnish, and oxidation...it's from Germany, but don't know if they still make it. Again, I think it's an automotive detailing product. I bought like 10 tubes of it 12 years ago and am not even halfway through them.

Raging Heretic 😎 I used " Turtle Wax" scratch remover which is really a polish to remove some scratches, and get this! I used "super glue to patch a chip on headstock edge ( many luthiers use a special type of this product or 2 part epoxy mixed with saw dust of that particular wood but some got on the unwanted area ( had to change my boxers lol) anyway q-tips and Turtle Wax polish & patience I got look of out of the factory and much cheaper than McGuire's. I don't think I'd do whole guitar tho with Turtle Wax I know the quality of McGuire's as I did auto graphics for 47 years and McGuire's would buff out clear coats look like glass but hand buff on instruments only I think. Wax on a guitar can ruin sound tho. Classical guitars hand made use tung oil sparingly no lacquer or clear coat .Well Ciao for Now. Paolo😎

I have a question for you. When I got my guitar it had very light colored ball end strings. Super NICE! EASY to play! I was talked into changing to ELIXER .13-.53.....WAY too heavy for me! They actually hurt my fingers. So....I just purchased 6 sets of Daddario's the "Custom Extra Light" .10-.46 Phosphor Bronze....I plan to change 'em all back! Since then ....other players have told me they DO NOT like coated strings....I think I am in that camp too! I am coming to be of the opinion that I want the "Lightest" strings I can find for my Mitchell MX 420 acoustic electric. (I am of the feeling that if I need more sound....just turn up the damn amp.) Right??? And....so....I might need to change strings more often? That is totally FINE with me....cause I actually really LIKE working on my guitars anyway!
@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 7 жыл бұрын
Oh yes .13s are actually considered 'heavy' although they tend to be labelled 'medium' by most companies - the reason for this is that .12s are labelled 'light' but considered 'standard' because most guitars ship with that gauge of strings. The custom extra light set that you got is pretty much as light as you can get so you should be happy with it if you like super light strings. In general light strings are easier to bend and heavier strings give more volume - choose what you need :) On the coated/uncoated strings: uncoated strings will need to be changed more often yes. How often depends on how much you play and your personal body chemistry ie how much you sweat and so forth. Pro players will often change every single show, and those who gig regularly will often change once a week. All the best with your music!

Thank you so much! You have given me SO much valuable information! WOW! Can't thank you enough for answering these nagging questions I have! Yes, Elixir labels the .13's as "HD LIGHT". they are NOT light for sure! I can play 'em fine...but like I said its bringing me to a whole new level of pain in my fingertips! So...I'm going to switch back as soon as I receive my new strings and winder! (these .13's feel like steel bars)!

I casually said I'd like to take guitar lessons so my children gifted me with a guitar for Mother's Day. I have tried wriggling the peg and it starts coming out then jams with the string and won't come out. I don't want to muck things up - how will I replace this stuck string ? Seems the string is stuck in the groove of the peg.

+Bill Wilson When you say peg do you mean tuning peg or bridge pin?
@2007kiltie
@2007kiltie 9 жыл бұрын
Bridge pin, but it is fine - I used the pin remover like you showed on the video and it came out. Why it was sticking I am not sure, perhaps being in a different temperature as I have moved home and although I had the guitar in the case - it was in a cold room. The only thing I can think of, but after being in the living room in a warmer situation it came out easy. Loved the video and gave me some tips I hadn't thought of. Thank you.

+Bill Wilson Glad to hear that! Bridge pins can sometimes stick - the trick is to loosen the string tension all the way and then get the pin out before pulling on the string. If necessary push down on the string (ie push towards the body of the guitar) whilst extracting the pin in order to clear the ball end from the bridge plate. All the best with your music!

If you follow the method shown in the video you cut the string to length BEFORE winding them onto the tuning machines.

@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 7 жыл бұрын
Yes you can, although I wouldn't recommend 80/20 strings if you're looking for a balanced tone, I would suggest going for phosphor bronze instead. My personal choice for acoustic guitar strings is D'Addario, I suggest their EJ16 or EXP16 sets for somebody like yourself. The EXPs are coated so will last a lot longer but cost more.

thanks for the informative video, I watched this after I changed my strings so I put the ball ends in at a 90 degree turn I don't think it affected the sound though and they didn't pop out. I had some stressful moments trying to winde the string and not have them overlap or pop back out of the tuners... I hope it gets easier the more I do it, do you think it is really bad that one string overlaps one time? thank you again!

Thanks for this fine video.I put it in my favorite browser. But just a short question.when you insert the string into the hole,a liitle bit of string about 5 mm is is place.don't you think it could bring some injuries to the fingers for instance.If yes,how to prevent,if not,forget this question. Thanks for forgiving my poor english.
@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Patrick, very glad the video has been useful. Yes that small length of string sticking out from the tuning machine is sharp and can cause injury if you are not careful. I have learned over the years to keep my hands away from that part of the guitar 😅 If you are not comfortable with this you can go back with your cutters and trim the string off flush with the post, but only after the string has been tuned to tension.

At last stage You rotate those string all downward from the pointer but i am confused coz other videos i have come across usually do both down and up rotation and the pointer usually comes in between them but yours were only downward. Is there some logic I am missing? Hope u understood my question....
@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 4 жыл бұрын
The logic behind winding downwards from where the string goes through the post is to maximise the break over angle of the string over the nut - this is especially important on straight headstock guitars like Fender teles and strats. It's just one of those little details that I feel is important. Thanks for watching 😊

New guitars can have relatively old strings on them - the guitar may have sat for months in a warehouse before reaching the shop. Change to a new set - if the same string breaks again then you can bring it back to the shop and have them sort it out.
