How do ballet dancers get flexible? I’ll be showing you the stretches I did as a kid back when I used to be really stiff! They’re easy to remember and helpful for even the most inexperienced beginner.

It’s requested A LOT to talk about how I got flexible/how to improve flexibility/what stretches to do. WELL, today I finally give the people what they want!
When I was a kid I was really really REALLY not flexible! I had a lot of catching up to do when I first joined a preprofessional ballet school, so I spent a lot of time stretching on my own. In the video I show you the EXACT SAME stretches I did. Well, it worked for me! And while I do think genetics play a big part in what your capable of achieving, it’s important to unlock your own potential so you can feel your best!

For anyone reading the comments that thinks they are starting ‘too late’, I say ‘WHAT SILLINESS’ . In our class I am the YOUNGEST and by far the least experienced. You should see the flexibility and professionalism of the ladies I dance with. We are led by an ex Royal Ballet dancer, who, in her 70s, dances circles around most 🌸 PLEASE NEVER GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAM BECAUSE OF SOMETHING AS SILLY AS A NUMBER ❤️

As an adult returning to ballet after 20+ yrs, I had lost most of my flexibility. I've started doing only active stretches every other day and, wow, does that help! I think I could turn those arabesque stretches into active stretches. 'Cause my arabesque is leaving a lot to be desired.
@jeanettekakareka
@jeanettekakareka 3 жыл бұрын
You definitely can make them active! I'd try engaging those back/butt/and leg muscles on and off to slowly gain confidence and strength. Maybe I could think about an arabesque strength video for the future. :-) Of course, gaining strength in flexibility is *vital* to making use of one's flexibility!

@jeanettekakareka
@jeanettekakareka Ай бұрын
I think that's really dependent on the person and their body. I would never stay in a stretch if I am getting that gut feeling that I need to stop. There's a certain amount that feels difficult but a little good. And then when you hold a stretch so long it feels wrong is when you should stop. Does that make sense? Also I'm not sure I'd want to think of it in "pressure" rather than "resistance" and I would keep that light in the beginning and then push myself further as weeks go on. But I wouldn't make large differences day to day. Hope that helps but it requires a lot of self awareness mostly!

As a professional, "splits" and similar big stretches are just a part of the daily things I do, it's probably a grand total of 5 or 10 minutes 😆 Because it's more about maintaining flexibility and feeling good in my body for the day, not getting further flexible. But when I was young and hadn't achieved flexibility yet, I spent a significant more amount of time on it! Just like anything 🙂 I spend more time doing yoga stretches because it benefits me more as a mature athlete.

I would focus on holding the leg at an angle that allows your hips to be more or less level. Use one hand to manually hold the leg within your natural turn out, so that you can focus on testing your strength coming from the butt, inner thigh muscle, and even your back muscles. Hopefully this will get you some strength in the right way over time. 🙏

Honestly yeah 😆 but in my husband's case, it's because they broke him in Chinese boarding school 😂😂🥲 but I helped my brother in ice hockey before! For you, I'd focus more on hip flexibility so deep squats. But of course some hamstring flexibility with the splits would help too!

I like stretching but I never understand how warmed up you need to be. Do I need to wait for ballet class to stretch or can I do it first thing in the morning?
@jeanettekakareka
@jeanettekakareka Жыл бұрын
It's a good question! If it's more stationary kind of stretching, doing a full barre beforehand is definitely advised. But if you're doing smaller, active stretches you can start that in the morning. I have a 6 minute stretch that I uploaded that shows smaller, active stretches. 🤗

I started ballet when I was 13 but due to some circumstances I stopped. Last 2019 I found out that I had scoliosis (but just a mild one). Now Im 20, am I able to go back at ballet even though I had scoliosis?
@jeanettekakareka
@jeanettekakareka 3 жыл бұрын
So long as you say it's mild and your doctor hasn't told you to stop physical activity, I think ballet would actually help! I have very very mild scoliosis as well. But, my mother's was really severe, which is actually why she put me in baby ballet when I was 3 to hopefully strengthen my spine and not have the same problems as her. I don't know if it worked, but it can't hurt! And at 20 you're not done growing either. 😊

@@jeanettekakareka, that was smart on her part. Strong back muscles will help the spine be straighter. I would think the fact you started gaining strength in your back muscles at such a young age that may have helped your spine grow straight.

I started ballet when i was 3 and i quit at 11. I am 15 now and i have never lost my interest in ballet but i'm too worried to start again. Is it impossible to become a professional dancer at this point ?
@jeanettekakareka
@jeanettekakareka 2 жыл бұрын
I can't say because I don't know your exact situation, but it's not impossible! Don't let the worry of whether you can be a professional deter you. If you still enjoy it, it will have value. ☺ I'd say no matter what, it really matters how hard you'll work at it, how much you'll listen, and the quality of school you attend. To be a professional, you need to attend a pre-professional level program. Good luck!

@@jeanettekakareka Thank you so much for your kind answer. I knew its not gonna be easy but I'll do my best. I was so discouraged because everyone I asked said its impossible. And of course the most important thing is to feel that joy i find in ballet. But i hope someday if i work hard i can achieve my goals. I really appreciate the hope that you give to people. "A la seconde" is also known as "second position", it's just the correct ballet (French) terminology. It's when the leg is at your side as you see in the demo. Except I kept the knee bent just as a stretch. A proper "a la seconde" or "second position" is with the leg fully stretched and up at the side. Hope that helps!
