A Beginners Guide To Luminar Neo's Catalog. I admit, it's not the most interesting topic but very important to ensure you have a good workflow when editing your photos. Luminar Neo's catalog isn't the most advanced but it's simple enough to use to organize your photos within Neo. I'll go over some folder/file prep, adding folders and albums, viewing and sorting options and more. This is the first video of my Beginners Guide To Luminar Neo, perfect for those of you who are new to photo editing in Luminar Neo.

Thank you Mike, that's great to hear and very encouraging. One more tip that I forgot to mention is to hit the "space bar" to get the filmstrip view. Unfortunately it only works in the catalog and not in the edits section. Thanks for the kind words!

I have neo 1.18. I don't have a catalog. I select an image and I want to expand it using the Generative Expand but I can't see this option anywhere. Is there a specific tutorial to indicate how to use this tool. Why is it that all of the options aren't on the right had side so that you can use them as you need them instead of going through a song and dance trying to find them.

this is one video I have been waiting for. Not all I want to know but better than anything else. I would like to know if I can simply do a drag/drop of my Pictures folder into the Luminar NEO location path (need that on too but may prefer too put the drive letter to my Data Drive. I tried something once and just got a real mess after 22 hours of time that was taken to copy 9-K+ but then showed by date taken (useless and not the way my Explorer folders are arranged which prefer. Any info in this regard would be appreciated. I also think that I will have to go through the video again and add the info to my .rtf file of NEO tips I am creating so that I can easily have the info at my fingertips rather than having to keep going through the video. Much easier to search using Ctrl + F. TIA

I wouldn't recommend it because that folder has system files that the program uses for caching and other system files. With that being said, personally sometimes what I do is drag images directly into root folders I've created to use within Neo. As I mentioned, I create separate folder prior to importing into Neo on a separate hard drive. If I know before hand that I want to import images to an existing Neo folder, I can do the import manually to those root folders. However it's just as well to do it within Neo. Unfortunately there isn't much flexibility. ON1 Photo RAW on the other hand has a great file management system. I'll be sharing that in the coming weeks! I'll be working on a tips and tricks series soon and thought of publishing on a blog of sorts. Just haven't had time to get it together but eventually I'll get there. Always appreciate your input, feedback and support my friend!

New to NEO and definitely needed this video - best on this topic. Question: due to storage space and organization purpose, can I assign the NEW CATALOG on an SSD but the RAW files (after transfer from camera) on a larger regular 4T HDD? My SSD should have enough capacity for processing and JPG export (write faster & temporary anyway) but I can put all the photo files on a 4T HDD. Or should I have the RAW photo files and NEO CATALOG folder on the same SSD drive ? I'm afraid my SSD with only 200+ GB capacity would only last me for a year or so (I also have other work on that drive as well) and then I have to consider migration etc which for me is a real headache. Thx very much indeed!

Hi Alex, I appreciate the kind words and support! So, there is nothing wrong with having your catalog on the SSD and having your RAW files in an HHD however you will most likely see sluggish performance within the catalog itself and with some extensive tasks since write speed on a HHD is slower however most of the heavy lifting is being done on the SSD, technically having your photos stored on the HHD is ok. Typically it's the thumbnails that can be slow to preview. With that being said, there are some options and workarounds with your current set up. Personally the way I keep Neo optimized is I have a dedicated SSD for my catalog and I will first organize my photos within it's folder in Neo upon importing, meaning I'll keep what I want to edit and delete the ones that I don't want to keep, or at least mark it as such. I will then create an album of photos "to edit" and then edit those photos. Once I'm down with that set, I will physically move it to an HHD drive for storage. At this point Neo will give you that "!" warning that the album is no longer connected but it's quite east to find the now new location and reconnect that album/folder. Eventually when my library gets too big, I will even delete albums or folders (in Neo only) that I don't use anymore to keep things slim. Neo isn't completely using the GPU just yet so I find it helps to keep things as slim as possible. There are many ways to approach this and I've been scripting out a video on this very topic because there is so many things to consider, cache files, write speed and how it effects performance, thumbnail preview etc. So in a long winded way....hahaha! Your method could work fine however you may run into performance issues once your library becomes big. The catalog file itself will also grow in size. The best thing for you would be to eventually get a 500GB to 1TB SSD at least or M.2 drive to use as your main SSD.

Great video thanks. Do you know if you have a folder added into Neo, then you add a subfolder to that, will it automatically get added in?
@MonzonMedia
@MonzonMedia 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Harry thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. If you add the sub-folder in Neo it will create the same folder in your system root folder and vice versa. Hope that helps!

I just purchased Neo and was starting to migrate AI to it when I realized, for the first time, that Ai (and I suppose Neo will too) had a separate catalog. Typically, I only keep a photo in the edit of AI or Neo to work on it until I'm satisfied. Then I export it with a slight addition to the end of the tag (usually an F) next to the file of origin photo, in a file created outside of Luminar for the original photos (a-la my Nikon camera program). Then I right click and send the edit window version in Luminar to the trash. It was only as I began to migrate that I understood AI had its own file, which explained why less than half a terabyte was almost exhausting my one TB of SSD. I really wish we had the option of a simple, one step wipe of Neo or AI after we're satisfied and save apart from the program. As it sits, I guess I'll have to go into the files and do it manually, though I'm worried about losing the skies when I do.

@MonzonMedia Жыл бұрын
Hey Andrew, thanks for the feedback. Yes they will have their own catalogs as they are technically different platforms. A simple one step option would be great wouldn't it? Regarding the skies, that's a good question as I've never tested that before. I'll look into it myself but keep me posted on how it goes for you.
