As you can see, a major element of owning a Malinois is that you have to calm them down, while simultaneously accepting that you will never really be able to calm them down. 😂

Honestly, I wish more trainers would be honest, and also shelters, and breeders. Maybe then we would have less dogs given up or left on the streets. I'm medically disabled, but this dog had me up and walking 3 miles a day, at the dog park 2x a day AND I STILL need to put him in day care sometimes to tucker him out. However, when I cannot move, he seems to know it and lays beside me protecting me, but if he senses I can do better, he lets me know. He's saving my life!

Even when trained they can be pure chaos. I had a lady bring one in as a stray to the vet I worked at. They were having a barbecue and he showed up for burgers 😂 We scanned for a microchip and it was registered in German. He was a professionally-trained, government-issued DEA dog that jumped the 6 ft fence in his own yard because he smelled a neighbor's barbecue a block away. He was so damn pleased with himself 😂

Exactly. And if you don't understand what drive is. Stay away. Ours hates thunder. We took her camping and she doesn't like the 4 wheelers. We can shoot around her no problem but 4 wheelers she dont like and thunder she hates. So she stayed in our camp trailer. We had a thunder storm come in fast and we didn't make it back to camp in time. Guess what. She met us on the road. Climbed up into the front of the 4wheeler and laid on the pad back to the trailer. One of the only times shes done that while their running. The door to the trailer had been ripped in half. Fiberglass, plastic, wood, and all had been ripped right through. These dogs have a determination unlike anything else I've ever seen. And the latest study on dog intelligence proves their far smarter than German shepherds or Collies scoring 35 out of 40. We're collies only got 25. They're super smart. Have the drive of a man who thinks he's going to get laid. And the energy to make sure they get what they're after Along with the smarts to figure out how to do it. That alone cost me roughly 1200 dollars at the vet to have the Fiberglass removed from her, nose, mouth, paws, and anywhere else they found it. As well as stitch up the large cuts she got from it. As well as 800 for the door. And another 100+ to have a 8th inch peace of aluminum cut out for the inside of the door to lower her ability to do it again. If you don't know these dogs don't get them please. If your planning on it. Get with trainers who understand them before hand. Join the groups on Facebook and other places. And if you get a puppy be ready for them to throw temper tantrums that can hurt you. I'm dead serious me and my wife had times we hid on the bed cause she was all pissed off that she couldn't have what she wanted. Their like a toddler with super sharp teeth and an insane instinct to chase and bite. I have stories galore of us trying to keep my cousins kids safe from her and telling them not to run in front of her and then turning it into a game to run her to the end of her lead. cause she would literally run and lunge at them when theyd take off. And having to put her up to keep her and them safe. She got better as she aged. She's had allot of training and work so now she's amazing but I'd have been in serious trouble if I hadn't worked with working breeds growing up. And didn't go meet with trainers and learn from other Mal owners

There’s this guy who always walks his Malinois at the same time every day as I do my GSD. It’s in an off leash park (not lots of dogs, lots of space). I let my dog just go run around and sniff. He jogs on the path, carries what looks like a military grade dog toy, the Malinois running right next to him, staring at him the whole time, then sprinting to get the toy and bring it back once he throws it. It comes to greet my dog, he says one word and it’s fully focused on him again. Such an intense breed.

GSPs are another breed that, while not as SUPER mentally intense as a malinois, should not under any circumstance live somewhere without extensive space to run nor with someone who is unable or unwilling to let them run free there for a long period of time. My family/parents have had GSPs for 25+ years now and when I see people (always in their 20s/30s) in my super densely populated city neighborhood walking them on a leash down the sidewalk...knowing that's the extent of their typical daily exercise...it's infuriating. It's like keeping an orca whale in a small pen/pool at Sea World.
@Nuadin

@KJones-qs7ju a bit curious how you know that's the extent? Could be worse, my neighbor leaves his gsd out all day and I don't think the poor thing ever gets the attention he needs. He's surprisingly a good boy though compared to my other neighbors' dogs which also get left out all day...

@@gaetanemcgraw5567 I can relate! My first dog was a black lab, who was dog reactive. The first day I took him to training, he growled and lunged at the other dogs. All of the other owners looked terrified (and relieved, that their dog wasn't the worst behaved. lol). The trainer asked to "borrow" my dog. She was a little tiny thing and I was nervous that he would drag her around the room. But by the end of class my lab was sitting, heeling, ignoring all of the other dogs (except for his nemesis, Muffin, the yorkie. That took extra sessions). This woman had him acting right within an hour. That let me know who the problem was😬🙋‍♀️😂 I was not very assertive with my dog training, it made me feel bad for some reason. But I was lucky that I had a trainer who focused on me and what I was doing (and not doing) to help my dog act appropriately. Because I didn't feel comfortable being assertive to begin with, I would pretend like I was an actor who was playing my dog trainer in a movie. And every time we went to dog training, for a walk, or even around the house doing obedience work, I would do the same thing- I asked myself what would my trainer do right now. Eventually, it just became second nature for me to handle my dog properly. But it was definitely a process!♥️

I've done a lot of training of all breeds. 99.99% of the time, the issue is the human, not the dog. You *muuuust* make sure the dog is the right fit, not only breed but individual personality or it's going to be rough.

@@deannad9105 And you just nailed it on the head. *This* is why there's a list of dog breeds that do not make good first dogs. Dogs are learning every moment of every day from the first second they come home. If you have a chill dog and make mistakes, you might be okay. If you bring home a smart, independent, stubborn breed with its own agenda and a ton of energy, you'll be up a creek without a paddle. The dog will *literally* bury you. For fun. And even after the exercise they dont really have a off switch as such itd ball time then lmao non stop ball time they really just don't tire. But amazing companionship for life, but i wouldn't suggest a malinois for just anybody. Only if you have free time and will actually give them a job and let them work. Not for your average person who think they can keep it inside all day

This is perfect. Mals have no off switch and are smarter than any other dog I've experienced. Mine knew how to unlock deadbolt doors to open the door. Nothing could contain her aside from padlocks on the doors. Not even a 10 foot chain link fence - she'd climb the fence. Insanely smart and a lot of work to contain that energy and train into a positive experience. Definitely not a "get one and ignore it" type of dog. 17 years we had our baby and she was at full throttle up until the cancer took her. Greatest dog I've ever had the pleasure of being owned by.

I haven't had the pleasure of being around a Belgian mal yet..a neighbor walks his little girl through our neighborhood all of the time tho. And I have/have had GSDS ,my sweet sweet so intelligent boy,Dax, who we lost at 7 years old last january from Lymphoma(horrible..absolutelyheartbreaking and horrible to see my baby go throughthat and us lose him) anywya he was a White GSD and omg he was so smart like your baby was. There was not a door/lock/deadbolt/cage that he couldn't open .lol..he was a Houdini pup for sure 💯 .and he was the sweetest most loyal, smart loving dog I've ever had in my life. And we had a bond that I feel like I will never find again with one. He knew what I was thinking most of the time. I ended up getting. A Blue GSD a few months later at 8 weeks old. His name is Kaiser and he is al.ost 16 months old. And he is a firecracker! Couldn't be more diff from my boy Dax was..which I totally understand, animals have different personalities and such just as we humans do. And it took me awhile to bond with him but it's finally getting better. He is just a lot more naughty lol than Dax ever was and he's destructive and just doesn't listen like Dax did...and he mouths/bites ALOT when I pet him /love on him/ try to put prong collar/Leash on him or do anythin really 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️ hee won't Even sit still or lay down with me to love on him or cuddle...he's too busy bitting me or pawing me or hurting me smh lol. He's Def a sh**head! I will say now that he is getting older he's starting to retain more and while I am.late getting him into training I will be doign so within like 2 months. Kaiser is super food motivated but jusy doesn't learn as quickly as Dax did..Dax I could tell hi something once or twice and he would jut know the stuff...Kaiser is very smart too just learns is different ways 😊 he is an ornery big dude but I love him to pieces 💜🖤...also I used to breed Chow cows when I was younger and they are so intelligent too. Like GSDs and Bel.mals...those 3 breeds(2 in my experience) are jst the easiest to housebreak and train in general. 🤷‍♀️

I had a Belgian Malinois growing up, they truly are something else… we used to take him everywhere we went if it was close by and he thought chilling in the bed of the truck was an absolute banger. So one Saturday morning we were going to get sod to replace it in the backyard. While we were leaving he came over to the door hype but we couldn’t take him because we were putting the sod in the bed of the truck where he rides. When I told him no he barked at the back door so I figured he just wanted to run around until we got back. I let him out in the backyard and we loaded up and started to leave. When we got to the stop sign at the end of our cul-de-sac I hear a load noise behind me. I turn around and my god damn dog is in the bed of the truck ready to go for the ride. This mf jumped over the god damn 6 foot tall fence, chased us the 750ish feet until we got to the stop sign at the end of the neighborhood and jumped in the back of the truck. To this day I can not believe that happened💀

Best alarm clock I ever had too. 7 days a week, all months of the year, my buddy just knew it was time to go for a walk at 4 AM in the morning, every morning, even if I was asleep... "Come-on dad, it's time for a walk, we are late cause it's 3 minutes past 4AM!"... I will miss him for the rest of my life. But yes, these guys are full throttle non-stop. These guys can learn anything. I taught mine commands in 3 languages, (which are just sounds to them) and hand commands and about 300 sign language gestures so my sister can deal with him too. He could answer yes or no with the shake of his head, pending what you asked him...amazing 4 legged critters that is for sure, but boy, a 7 day week, is pretty tiring. 😆

He is the goofiest, most playful, most sweetest dog I've ever had. Just know that Malinois can spend just as much time in the air as they do on the ground. Natural acrobats. With that being said, he will not hesitate to crawl up into your lap and cuddle. The only downside to this is if he hears a knock at the door or something in the house excites him, you will be used as a spring board. When he was a puppy, he spent most of his time attached to my pant leg.

You think you have a Belgian malinois it is probably a mix. if it is able to be trained properly or you have very good training capability or experience. I know military personnel excellent dog-training experience who have not been able to handle a malinois. Many of them are being dumped on the market and lie to people about being just German shepherds because bad breeders figured out the dogs are hard to handle and even cartel members don't even like dealing with them. I have friends who thought they were saving them out of Mexico boy did they get burned. The dogs are purebred malinois the DNA was run and boy the dogs are just hard to handle because they are not a pet. Ok Don't give people false ideas of all they might be able to pick one up at the pound it'll be okay it's not. These things are bred for a very specific reason just like the Nazis bred their certain type of dogs and most of those animals were euthanized or basically killed by the allies after the war. Only those that came from farms were allowed to live because it was proven that those that came from the soldiers been purposefully done so so for too long.

@@valiantsfelinesmccarty6678 As much as you’re trying to warn people that most Malinois are not as easy as you’re assuming the original commenter is suggesting, you’re seriously overstepping by making blanket statements about a breed and simultaneously telling someone they are wrong about their own dog. Most people say the same things about Aussies - they need a job, they are very smart and very active and need constant stimulation. I can absolutely get behind saying this as a general statement to warn people about what you could be getting into with the breed. But arguing with someone that they don’t have an “actual (whatever breed)” is so dumb. I myself have an Aussie who does not tear things up or destroy property or pace or act up in obnoxious ways when not exercised enough. He is fine being a couch potato but is also up for any kind of activity and adventure. However I’ve also personally met multiple Aussies that are insane and absolutely NEED constant stimulation and exercise to not be absolute demons at home. I’ve also met others lazier than my pup.

Facts. My neighbor adopted one from a county animal shelter that some idiot had tied to a pole at the end of a Jack In the Box drive through with a bowl of water and abandoned him. (heartless! Evil!). His name is Jack now. Jack has severe anxiety and trust issues. I know being in her care is better than being at a shelter for sure, but oh man he's a confused pup. 2 years old and massive. I do understand this dog is traumatized. But when I met him, it was like meeting an intellectual, emotionally scarred giant clumsy baby with teeth and four legs. He is afraid to do anything, or he does everything x100. He wouldn't look at me til I called him over, then he pushed me down with excitement. He needs training and love. Luckily he is getting love now. Incredible dogs. A commitment of time and energy and discipline tho. Listen to this man in the video! ❤

I had a Doberman. Hard first year or two. Like a little velociraptor in your house. But after that, the smartest, loving, loyal and best friend you’ll ever have. I shopped, and then re-search for nearly 2 years before I chose between a Belgium and Doberman. And the deciding factor was breeders. I was planning to check out both breeds b4 i chose. Drove six hours to meet the puppies, and fell in love with one and sat in the garage for almost 2 hours, getting to know the puppies and I couldn’t leave without him. So I never even made it to the Belgium breeder but from my research they’re very similar dogs and were created in the same area except for Dobermans don’t have the coat to handle the cold. But they’re used in countries with warmer clients because they share nearly the same characteristics that make Belgium’s great dogs.

@@abramweston9873 Mines is full black I can’t even see him when he’s in his kennel lol but he is very loyal and intelligent he already knows over 10 tricks and just took 2 weeks to learn all of them. For a 2 month old belgian that’s really impressive to me cause I read they start learning when they are 3 months. He is a little stubborn at times tho.

Ya see..... I found a 7/8 month old dog at a Huddle House in town and immediately bonded with her. Her old owner didn't want her and she kept climbing the fence, was badly taken care of. She's a Belgian Malinois mix 😭 she doesn't bark, she's sooo intellectual. She doesn't need to be walked on a leash because she stays next to me or a bit ahead and when I stop, she looks back and stops. She's so smart and I adore that I found her. My Scarlet is my emotional support and I love that she is high in energy, but she also loves her naps.

Can confirm! I'm fostering a Malinois (from a family member who was downsizing greatly and had no time, it was me or a kennel that had no time for individual dogs). I've never been so active in my life. I do have experience with Rotties (owned and fostered) but this is a different beast altogether. I'm sick right now and its awful! I love her to pieces but daaaaamn shes came with a number of complexities that she learned from her previous owner that needed to be corrected. She's heading to her forever home this weekend. If I decide to continue fostering Malinois I will be purchasing a god damn self propelled dog treadmill so when I'm sick or its waaaaay too hot outside, the dog will still be able to get the exercise it needs. I may be exhausted but I 100% enjoyed the experience and bringing this girl to a point where shes adoptable. As for owning, I'll go with a dog that's a bit less of a crackhead. Edit: She actually is staying with me until her reactivity is under control. I did get a dog powered treadmill for her. And I'm still having a blast with her. My GSD will have to wait. Edit: *ahem* Turns out, I like the crackhead dog. As of December 25th, 2023, I adopted her. She's still got a lot of complexities, but we're working through them. It takes just as long to train them out of bad behaviours as it does to create them. So I've got another 3 years of work ahead of me. I'm also probably going to get a Maligator puppy once Bella is a lot older. I love the breed and I absolutely love training and exercise!

It’s because he’s so well trained, he knows to keep his eye on his owner because he’s waiting for the owner to change direction or stop. That’s the sign of a dog trained in obedience. If you tell them to heel or sometimes just put their special collar and leash on, they know to pay attention and stay glued to your side. However, you can give them a release word like okay that tells them it’s all right to walk like a normal dog. However, I’m sure he’ll never pull. You are correct, though. The dog does know he’s special. You can tell he’s a confident, smart, well-trained dog, and I’m betting that everything he did in this video was on command, probably through hand signal. I love watching dogs like this work. You can tell they love it.
