You seems so close to her. 😊 She don't seems to be bothered by the noise of the city. She found a good meal ! Maybe the Blue Jay expected a part of it. It’s difficult to see them in my area, they are really shy and most of the time, they stay far of humans. Wonderful video Cathy ! Have a great day ! Best regards, Annie

So true Annie. Seeing a kingfisher is difficult and when I get lucky, they are far. This kingfisher didn't seem to mind the noise of the city and people enough to stop it from fishing. It kept a large distance but I was closer while it rested on the branch. Unfortunately it flew further away after catching the fish. I wish she had returned to the original branch for a closer view but was happy to watch it with its fish. Have a wonderful week!! Warm regards, Cathy

Wow! It was my goal this summer to film the kingfisher catching a fish! I saw it, but not when it came time to grab its prey and hit it. They are quickly these birds. I will be back next summer, hoping to make a film like yours! It's amazing the big fish he swallows! And its almost double that comes to rest right next to it! Superb Quoteny capture and video! What luck! Well done! Have a great week! Best regards! Celine

Thank you dear Celine! They are so fast, I have never been able to catch the kingfisher when it flies off and dives for a fish. Best of luck to you next summer! I was surprised when the Blue Jay appeared, it just seemed curious and left. Enjoy your week! Warm regards, Cathy

Truly PHENOMENAL footage of this young kingfisher Cathy, I love how close up you were able to film him then from a distance watching him whack that fish so hard before eating it was pretty epic, poor fish though. I always look forward to your videos, sorry I'm a little behind. I wish you a lovely day.

You managed to capture the belted kingfisher slamming the body of the fish repetitively in order to kill it before eating it. That’s there MO. They don’t peck and rip… what kind of camera did you use to film this? Your video is Nat Geo worthy… and to think you took this in Central Park NYC! Hardly any sound of traffic. AMAZING,!thank you for sharing your amazing footage!

I have found these birds to be so elusive when I'm filming--guess I haven't practiced as much patience about that as you obviously have. Got any guesses about why he keeps banging that fish against a limb? It's not like he's banging the fish's head to make it unconscious. I don't see herons do that with their fish.
@quote_nature4 жыл бұрын
I find them very hard to spot unless you see them flying or hear their great rattle call. My guess about hitting the fish is to tenderize it or break up the bones so its easy going down. The fish they catch always seem half their size and swallowing it must be a challenge.
@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME4 жыл бұрын
@@quote_nature Yep, I love that rattle call. As for the possibility that the Kingfisher is "tenderizing" his meat, I hadn't considered that. I guess I lean more toward the "making sure the fish is dead" school of thought--though unless the bird explains himself, we may never know.
