My blades for my eXmark 52" Vantage arrived on Saturday ( 09April2022 ). My current blades by Rotary ( part# 11421 ) after 15 hours in Florida ( are always worn out ).Then, I installed the Meg-Mo blades at 318.1 hours on my mower; and started to mow my property 5 acres. Currently, I have mowed 2.6 hours with the Meg-Mo blades ( hour meter is 320.7 hrs ) and my lawn looks great and a much faster cutting time with these blades. OH YEA

I am on my third set. Good cuts. The upper portion above the cutting edge has disintegrated over time. The cutting surface has remained completely intact. The part of the blade above the cutting area is bent upwards and that is what has broken down.

Cool concept, I’d be willing to know more also. I think spindles would be ok unless you hit something with that big disc to make it unbalanced. Probably also puts a lot of strain on the clutch getting all that mass spinning. I use a wider and heavier blade for leaf season and notice a difference getting those started compared to normal mowin blades.

I'm in Melbourne Australia and we had an old Briggs & Stratton mower many years ago (30+) and it had a disk with 4 small blades like this on it and it was kinda the norm then but I have noticed these days most residential mowers both that I have purchased and used lately and seen when looking at the local hardware have gone to a single bar type of blade like the one you showed at the start. I don't know why but I would think the 4 blades would make a better and cleaner cut and like you stated they would rotate out of the way when hitting some for of obstruction like branches and stumps or bottles, cans, newspapers etc that people throw onto our lawns and I for one just mow over them as I have a bad back and don't check or clean the grass before mowing. I am in the process of refurbishing an old Rover ride on mower to mow my lawns with as it takes me 2 hours to mow my large block which is a corner block (not counting the time taken to cut the edges, with 5 separate sections of grass being...a back yard, a side yard, a front yard and 2 nature strips)grrr.... I hate mowing lawns.... FYI I came here to see what your channel was about after seeing some comments on Matt's MORR channel today and thought I would check it out.. ~;0)

This type blade was first introduced to farmers, back in the late 70s. Initially found on disk mowers. Now it is standard on all haybines and end even combines and choppers. It is a proven design, that is slowly making its way down to lawn mowers. My only complaint is the initial costs. The web site shows replacement blades are $8.95 plus S&H.

We had a Jacobson Mower back in the 70's. I had a big round disk and four almost triangular blades that were reversible. Very similar to this setup. Blades were tight, but would rotate if you hit something hard. It cut very nice. I think I heard that eventually they were outlawed for safety reasons. If a bolt would break it' wouldn't be pretty.

Like all the other Aussies here, we have them. I get hi lift (curve in blade) I use catcher always. $25 a set so I just replace them after my Spring Renovation. A question you could ask is different styles to applications.

Yes the MegMo blades have been around for a while. Oregon Gator blades are another popular blade. I have them on my 21" push mower and my garden tractor mower. They hold an edge much longer than a standard OEM blade.

My son has these on his 42”Bob cat he loves them I ordered a Set and tried them on my 60” Bobcat and it vibrates like crazy I called the co and they were no help so I went back to my regular blades which work great I use the high lift in summer and the Gater blades in fall

Jacobsen had that on a rotary two cycle mower in the 1960-s, Google Turbo-Vac or Turbo-cut. It was a conical circle type blade with four fixed triangle cutting surfaces, they were sharp on both cutting sides so you could flip them over. The blade also provided flywheel action so after shutting the mower off you could mow for about a minute or so. I have a Turbo-Vac from 1960, and it is hands down the best bagger I have had, better than a Snapper Hi-Vac,

It is an interesting idea. My only concern is the bolts. With a single blade the balanced spinning force tightens it in but these knives moving like that will apply friction and force pulling outward on the bolt itself. It could be perfectly fine but I'll wait till you or others test the limits 🤣

I had a Yazoo push mower in the 80's. It had the same type blade. I though it cut great till one of the bolts on the bottom of a blade wore down. One blade cane off went through the deck and haft way across the street. I was just glade it didn't come back at me.

I'm just thinking the weight of the metal plate wiould be more stable than the blade used mostly here in America. The weight of the little cutting blades is negible . I think if the little blades were of slightly different weight it wouldn't matter because of the centrifugal force of the solid steel plate. Just saying I would worry about it.

@@timbow50 That’s probably true, I’ve also seen small homeowner lawn mowers with four separate blades attached to a plate hub. I think they are more common outside the US but they seem to be consumer tools so probably aren’t too sensitive about balancing.

Totally diggin' the concept. My questions would be: 1: I see a nut holding each blade on. What prevents those nuts from backing off over time and you launching one of those dudes out from under your mower? 2: Do they make a high-lift version? 3: How well do they bag?

Cost is a function of time. The initial cost is higher but the long term cost is lower since the small blades are cheaper than a full blade.

I've seen something similar to this on one of the small robotic mowers. If I remember correctly they also use a center disc but use small razor type blades mounted to it.

I bought a set of the Mega-Mo blades from the owner at a turf show in Biloxi, Ms several years ago. Besides sounding like a bumble-bee when running, they do a decent job. Not necessarily better than other mulching blades. The one thing I didn't like about these blades is when it's time to sharpen blades (every other Monday for us) there's a lot of bolts to remove and put back together. Also, they slow you down in tall grass as in shopping center grass (johnson grass) where my regular mulching blades I can run almost wide open. I think they are a good use for residential grass that get's cut every week.

Thoughts: 1) how does one balance 4 blades? Seems like it would be difficult. 2) Seems like a lot of extra material to drag on thick turf. Wouldn’t this extra drag be hard on the engine over time? Specifically smaller engine mowers, maybe like a Toro Recycler (Regular). 3) inevitably one of us is going to run over a stump, large stick, or similar hefty object. I’d like to see how this performs on the rugged test. And if it destroys the engine/drive mechanism of the attached mower. Again, think cheaper smaller engine mowers. 4) how good does it mulch thick leaves? Could be a major selling point if it’s good.

Is there a hardened bushing around the bolt that the blade rides on, or is it just the bolt? Wondering about whether the bolt can break or the blades’ holes stretch over time: resulting in a blade launching away.

I dont think its much about the bolt breaking, its more about which material will wear first since there is free play. A bushing is sacrificial and replaceable. As long as its designed properly (X amount of hours of use or X amount of times on and off, X amount of objects hit) then this would be the best performance. Also, a bushing decreases the chance of the bolt loosening over time as the blade moves back and forth upon engaging, disengaging, striking an object, or normal use against grass. Movement needs to be accounted for (which im sure they have, im just not familiar enough with the product and thinking out loud). Id agree, that bolt would likely be a shoulder bolt attaching the blade to the center plate. Otherwise, threads contacting the blade is definitely not ideal. Surface area for wear is too high.

Rust resistant? How often on an average residential lawn can they go without sharpening? I have about 10 Gator Blades. Trade-in opportunity. How ard are they to sharpen? How many times can they be Sharpened and how do you know when it's time to replace them? Has a nut on a knife ever come off and what happens to the mower deck if it does? How are they balanced properly with four extensions instead of two? I want to try a pair on my Toro Timecutter 4235.

Id be curious to know if the blades makes any difference on uneven/unlevel yards. Like where a standard blade cuts the grass shorter in one area then another. Making a gash in the grass.(hope that makes since)

2:30 absolutely depends on mower rpm, power, speed. But blade angle and other blade geometries can change where the grass is getting sucked up. Ive seen blades with 10+ inches of paint worn away on the front of the blade (only sharpened up to 4 inches) and then ive seen blades (on the same machine at a later date) with 6 inches of sharpened edge and only the first 3-4 inches really gets worn down.

Looks great in theory. I’m wondering how they will work on a mower with an automatic throttle while mowing thick and tall grass. Will the thick and tall grass cause the blades to slide back, muck like hurtling an obstacle, causing a smaller cutting area or not a good cut?

Swing back blades are standard in Australia. They really only “swing back” if they hit something ridged and protect your mower components. They don’t “swing back” when mowing stuff that can be mowed. Cut quality is excellent!

One of the properties I mow is the common area at a trailer park. Its about 8 acres of grass that gets cut. The grass there grows very tall. Usually its 8-12 inches tall when i get there, and THICK. Not to mention all the obstacles that hide in that tall thick turf. Id like to see how it does out there. I have hit cinderblocks, construction waste, big rocks, metal parts that have fallen off machinery, and all types of crap that the the local kids leave laying around. Id like to see how these blades and pivot points hold up to a season of mowing that place!

I run a small commercial lawn care company up here in Rhode island. I would strongly prefer to cut the grass without having to bag. Most of my Lawns are cut either weekly or bi-weekly . Do you believe these blades will leave smaller finer clippings on the lawn versus conventional blades ?

I would like to know how easy the knives come off and are sharpened. I know that bush hog blades are more dull than sharp; would that work as well? Longevity would be great to see, especially with transitional yards. I’m converting some early growth forestland into back yard. It’s uneven, chocked full of mulch chips that I can hear bouncing around in my deck……

Had these on diesel Dixie Chopper, a Bladerunner and a Schweiss mower. The Dixie and the Bladerunner blade speed was too fast for them and the knives would not extend out to cut cleanly leaving a 1" strip of totally uncut grass between the blades. The Schweiss it dogged the engine so bad it would not cut grass taller than 3". Waste of money might be good however on a homeowner or a walk behind mower were you are not into production mowing.

BTW there is another company that makes a similar product made in a triangle and using 3 swing blades. They are made in Chilicothie MO. Never tried them after the meg-mow thing. I have found it better to just stack a standard blade with a gator type works exceptional.

Sorry if this is a duplicate, but I have a Honda std residential mower with 2 blades, one of which is on top of but set back of the bottom blade for supreme mulching (mulches VERY WELL). I assume this bald may cut better but not mulch as well?

With the added weight at the end of the rotary disc because it uses four blades rather than two, my guess is there is much more centrifugal force and stress being placed on the shaft of the motor. Longer term my guess is the outboard bearing of the motor drive shaft is seeing much more stress from the spinning Force and weight of the additional two blades. This concept must be tested over time to see if motor shaft outboard bearing life is in fact shortened. Second, is regarding the thoroughness of the cut. My guess is as you cut thick grass and grass which contains a variety of grass types including weeds, the blades May in fact not slice through an occasional weed or grass blade because of the large size of the center disc. Of course the only way one would be able to confirm these technical suspicions is for extensive testing on a wide variety of grass and weeds. Lastly, each of the four knives are attached to the center disc with a single bolt. Engineers refer to such a design as a single point of failure. My guess is it would be better to use two bolts per blade and make sure castellated lock nuts are employed. I like the idea that they are using a Superior steel with higher hardness and hopefully a metallurgist has assisted in the selection of the steel because toughness, what engineers refer to as the ability to absorb impact energy is not compromised. For all of these reasons I would never purchase such a blade because of the dangers involved of a very high velocity, spinning at 18,000 RPMs, cutting blade made by a non-original equipment manufacturer because such a small independent firm does not have the financial resources to employ design engineers and metallurgists along with research and testing facilities to prove out the design for reliability, dependability and safety. Placing such a blade on a mower puts the owner of the mower at severe liability should anything go wrong with the cutting knives or blades over time. From a technical standpoint, the blade could fracture and pieces could be ejected out of the bottom of the mower at extremely high velocities. Blades could sheer off or mechanically separate from the connection bolt and do very serious damage and harm to the mower as well as innocent bystanders. From my perspective as a retired engineer and businessman, only the very risky or severely ignorant would purchase and install such a blade. That said, it is innovative in design and Worthy of refinement, testing, investigation and design improvements. Who would take on such a task with the financial resources, technical wherewithal and incentive? It would only be a large OEM such as Toro, MTD, Ariens, etc. For an individual homeowner or a small landscaping businessman to use these blades has a very low reward and a very high risk aspect that could prove financially disastrous. These are the reasons why I stay away from new, small scale, independent designs to be retrofitted onto OEM equipment. I have seen and heard of too many disasters. I am not paid by any OEM, but I tell you from decades of experience stay with the OEM parts. NOW THE CHINESE ARE FILTHY, DECEPTIVE, NEGLIGENT AND CHEATING BUSINESSMAN. eHE WAY THESe FILTHY CHINESE COMPETE IS THEY COPY DESIGNS, REVERSE ENGINEER EVERYTHING, USE CHEAPER MATERIALS AND DESIGNS AND THEN SELL THEM FOR 10 TO 20% LESS THAN THE ESTABLISHED AND PROVEN OEM. Exmark blades and think wright and scag have a a blade with the cutting angle 1 inch away from the hole. Does this work on a 60 inch deck and is it compatible with exmark? And can a toro mower have a exmark blade?

Howdy Allyn. Any updates on this product? I too was looking at these and instead went with the Xblade system from Ballard. Just ordered them for my Bad Boy ZTE 60". Three blades and the Xblade bracket was about $145 with tax here in South Carolina. I am going to be using it to cut my 4.5 acres or horse pasture every 2-3 weeks. So 1/3 rule out the door, and in fact I am mostly cutting 8" to 12". I usually need to double cut and I am trying to avoid this as it takes about 3 hours for one cut. I am notoriously unkind to my mower and this Bad Boy "takes a licking and keeps on ticking". With two "standard blades" (one ripper and one razor) x 3 I am thinking its going to be easier to sharpen, but I love how the Meg-Mo's blades retract when they hit something. I am constantly hitting percolating bricks, downed branches, roots and fire ant hills. I have read and viewed that its not recommended to engage the blades at full RPMs, so anyone using the Xblade, and perhaps the Meg-mo, should be engaging the cutter at half or less throttle. Any updates or an X Blade vs Meg-Mo death match in new content would be smokin' Your bud, Jack up der in Aiken, SC.

Their website listed they have blades for tractors. Does that include subcompact tractors. I have the Kubota BX2380 and I think these blades would work great if they fit

They (blades or knives) remind me of the blades on some weedwhackers. It might be a nice idea to for lawn mowers to have this option. Seems like they would be easier to undo/reattach?

Allyn, you kind of answered my question, but not completely. Are these blades only for riding mowers or do they make them for any type of mower (walk behind mower, commercial mower, etc.) since they are custom made?

Please ask them what they do to make sure the blades stay level and also able to rotate freely. Couldn’t tell from the brief footage what hardware connects the knives to the center hub. Obviously centrifugal force would keep the fully extended and level most of the time but I assume there’s some play to allow them to swing that could allow some vertical movement as well.

I’ve got a simple eXMark Quest. I’m curious about the high lift blades just in general. Does this company make them? I’ve heard high lift blades really help with stripping.

My understanding is the ryobi battery ZT rpms more than a residential and commercial ZT. Would the additional weight on an e-motor be too much where a gas motor would handle it. Or would this combination further blow our minds...

Saw the system at the GIE 2 years ago. My only concern is that the blades (knifes) don’t seem very sharp out of the box and being they are so hard, can you get them super sharp? I have sold 2 sets to other people and they both love it!

I'm going to test it on some thicker grass this Saturday but so far what I have found is that they cut is actually VERY clean. I don't know if it's because of the hardness of the steal or what but for sure, with the blades right out of the box, the cut is like a razor.

I have a toro as well. Do you think they are a good high lift blades? I feel like if they aren't lifting the grass the cut will suffer.

You should look into spindle life and belt life and ask questions the manufacturer they're going to say now you don't have to worry about it and that but you know go to somebody that you know is an expert if you can find them
