Good video! Very informative and detailed. I have some questions which you might be able to answer: OASE says the reel blades need to me changed every 3 - 4 years. At 2:24 min you say the reel needs a "major sharpening". These information sound contrary to me. Do you know if it needs to be changed or if sharpening is enough by know? To be honest I don't know why it should be sharpened if it's doing that itself. If the reel needs to be changed, do you know the costs of it and if you can do it by yourself?
@pestandlawnginja5 ай бұрын
Morning! Great questions. The reel itself has a "lifetime" of three years. What that means is the reel needs to be ground down / sharpened by a machine to get rid of the nicks and ruts in the reels. As of now the company has been unclear on how this can or will be accomplished, so I don't have a clear answer. I commonly take my reels to a service center or I send them back to the manufacturer. My opinion, which I don't work for them, is it'll be the same way in the end. The regular maintenance sharpening is called back lapping which you'll do at home running a software sequence at home to run the reel backwards over the bed knife.
@phillipklaiber39862 ай бұрын

Nice finish to the lawn, navigation can now be perfected to be wireless and GPS-free, but the most significant downside to the concept (reel mower) is the same as the old push mower. The blade is more or less permanent - requires sharpening, and any dings or dents will affect the cut. Dings or dents from branches, twigs, small undetected obstacles, gravel or rocks, even borders or bits of mulch. And these become more likely with greater frequency of cutting - you almost need to do yard policing prior to each mow (a brief wind storm leaves my yard covered with debris from surrounding trees). If you trash the blade(s) on a Segway or Husqvarna, or if they dull (my Segway blades last about 80 hours), you take a couple of minutes and replace them I like the idea, and look forward to further advances, but fear this may be a short branch on the automower evolutionary tree.

I am happy to see a video on this new product that is not the glowing marketing material. I pinged Oasa several questions on the Kickstarter page, but I'll share them here if you have any thoughts and can share comments. I live in Florida. It is HOT here. We have Saint Augustine grass, which is much thicker and broader than the grass you have in the video. Can the R1 handle high temperatures and "tropical" sun? Can the R1 handle thick St. Augustine grass? St. Augustine grass grows up, meaning that where it may have been installed nearly flush with sidewalks or driveways, as it matures over the years, it will have a root bed above the concrete creating a "step", can the R1 accommodate that and not get "stuck"? Without a GPS, how does the R1 auto-map the perimeter with no fences to delineate the separation between properties? Lastly, what kind of end-user maintenance program is needed, and cost of parts, such as the reel, wheels, and tires?
@pestandlawnginja6 ай бұрын
Cutting st Augustine will be fine. This is a very high quality reel. As for maintenance and the long term. The question is how to grind the reel every e years and how that will be resolved. I don't have an answer for that. In regards to the borders the lidar computer it all by separating shapes and patterns and colors. No real issues there. Lidars been used in homes for many years. Not a new technology. You can indeed program neighboring property lines by using the manual controls.

Maybe score important aspects like cut quality, mapping and navigation, battery life, overall quality, warranty, etc. Then give a few recommendations based on category? I’m really intrigued by robot mowers. I only have a 2000 sq foot front lawn now that I’ve built a pool in the backyard, but with two babies, I’d love to minimize yard maintenance but still have a really nice lawn. Currently cutting hybrid bermuda with a driveway and sidewalks to navigate, tree rings, and narrow side yard.

Need more updates like you talked about at the end. Compare this to Luba 2 you just reviewed so I can see which to buy next year, I just put down tiftuf Bermuda and it’s going to need to be mowed OFTEN.

Heya, Ginja! I'm a bit unclear about how it finds edges if there isn't a fence or some "object" above cut level. Will it initially try mowing over your driveway, and have to be set for exclusion zones? Or, to include areas that are a different color, from bare spots...? Well don vid, explained a lot. Gonna watch how this mower progresses!
@pestandlawnginja6 ай бұрын
great question! The best way i can describe it is the machines color coordinate the grass to identify it. so it sees and identifies boundaries. In the past I've tried to program all the mowers to mow past the driveway and they won't do it due to the obstacle recognition. they always stop short because they receive an alert its not grass and stays in the boundary. Other than that, during the setup process you're telling them where the boundaries are, so everything outside that zone is essentially set as a no go zone. As far as bare spots goes...... it does mess with a lot of mowers.

It appears to work just like robot vacuums, which are very accurate and reliable at avoiding obstacles and no-go zones.

Did you try to hang the edge over the top of the curb? Or is that too tight of a tolerance? I'm bummed about no night cutting, I must admit. For my .02 they should make it cut lower and forget the 2"and higher. Reel cut people are accustomed to paying more for this type of cut. You can't be all things to all people. I'm anxious for the release to the masses.

with every update it gets soo close. this last update is was 2" to 4" off the curb and on the edge cutting it was hovering my concrete border and getting it all.

How loud is the mover? Sounds very loud for me in one sequence of your video 🤔

Very cool, but would you be willing to spend your own money on this type of robotic mower?
@pestandlawnginja6 ай бұрын
I would. As I explained in the video I've spent over $2k for each of my reel mowers

This would be perfect for my parents, but they have a back corner that gets really soggy after it rains. So soggy that the zero-turn they have not can't go back there. Any concerns using this in that soggy area?
@pestandlawnginja6 ай бұрын
Concern.... yes. But you can easily set a virtual fence to avoid those areas for good or temporarily

As long as there aren't puddles, this is a huge selling point for the extremely light footprint of the robots. Designed to mow everyday.

Im curious as to whats gonna stop someone from stealing this. "Sirens" are great but i wouldnt feel at ease until it has some gps and data.. Why not also use it to mow. We have porch pirates ..this things even easier to just grap.

same tech as in cell phones. devices are rendered useless. back in the day theft of cell phones world wide was high. these days its much lower because people understand they can't use it and it'll be tracked back to them.

seems like a high chance of theft. can you elaborate on the defense? will it lock out the next user? seems like you would need a front and backyard for most properties
@pestandlawnginja6 ай бұрын
the anti theft is still being integrated. I would anticipate gps geo fencing, alarm, app notifications when its outside the area. What i would like to see is for them to get into the camera and take pictures and video actively so it can be referenced later. and to answer your question, the apps and emails and mac addresses of the devices are bound. so it would not be usable for anyone else.
