Great review! I agree with your final thoughts; the Rats are really well done and balanced. Badgers definitely feel like a puzzle, and it's interesting to see if they'll turn out to be the "Red" militant faction that ADSET makes them out to be.

Obviously the Horde is just a reference to Mongols or some other barbaric invader, so I'd argue that they don't actually have anything that resembles an assembly or a political entity. They're just the Horde. They move around and conquer, there is no higher ideal (except hoarding of course).

Unfortunately, I found most videos either moved too slow, and went too in depth about the mechanics, or they moved way too quick to actually grasp what is happening with this expansion. Interesting note on the naming conventions of the factions; I subconsciously took their strange names to mean that they're not strictly governmental powers, but instead a long-forgotten holy force (whose only leader is divine) and a nameless bunch of anarchists (the Warlord being any rat that just happens to be anointed). While even the Lizard Cult and the Corvid Conspiracy are vying for control of public opinion, these two new factions really don't care about other people, since the Keepers don't score by ruling and the Hundreds want *all* enemy pieces gone, no negotiation. It's definitely a different flavor, but one that contributes to the more historical feel of Root with how "old woodland" the two factions feel. Otherwise, yes, I'm one such person who finds the Hundreds super difficult to oppose. The fact that they gain more actions with no way to lose them and score points merely by existing has me concerned for their overall strength. I think 4-player might be best for them to have a much harder time actually winning, what with how many more enemy pieces there'd be. Still, like you say, super compelling presence. Also like you say, I'm a big fan of the Keepers. Encamping, decamping, going on their pilgrimage feels rewarding. If they're as militant as the game suggests, perhaps I need to be more aggressive in recruiting and moving, but I'll learn with time (and perhaps some new strategy guides? Plz). Good job, as usual. Love your thoughts and presentation! Hope you're doing well.

I enjoy this take a lot! And I will meditate on it some more. In Lower player counts its all about utilizing Hirelings on the backline. Dont craft cards that increase their Prowess. Instead bags are good because that Mood is one of the Warlords best! There is a fun little Snippet Nitrorev made on his channel! check that out. Guides are coming :) I appreciate you!

I love the hirelings idea for 2-3 player games. It opens up playing more the faction you want to (the Cats/Eyre/Alliance... threat can be included anyway). A boost to Root in my book. Two new factions are fun but I'm not done with all previous ones yet. never bad thing though (again no one NEEDS to play vaagbond for ruins etc).

Just a brief explanation: Base: Factions are - Cats, Birds, Woodland Alliance, Vagabond (Tinkerer, Thief and Ranger characters). Base deck, autumn and winter maps. Riverfolk: Factions are - Otters, Lizards, 2nd vagabond board (along with new Vagabond Characters: Arbiter, Vagrant, Scoundrel) and components. Also adds Mechanical Marquise bot (but this is generally viewed as not very good by the solo community). Underworld: Factions are - Moles, Corvids. Mountain and Lake maps, along with the Pass and Ferry landmarks respectively. Marauders: Factions are - Rats, Badgers. Adds Advanced setup cards for more competitive play. Adds the Hirelings for the 4 base game factions (cats, birds, WA and vaga). Clockwork: Adds 4 bots for the base factions (cats - updated version from riverfolk one, birds, WA, vaga), generally considered to be very good by the solo community. Each bot has difficulty and trait cards. Clockwork 2: Adds 4 bots for the factions in Riverfolk and Underworld expansions (otters, lizards, moles, corvids). Each bot has difficulty and trait cards. Also has extra trait cards for bots from clockwork 1. Vagabond pack: Adds 3 new Vagabond characters (Harrier, Adventurer, Ronin). Also provides custom meeples for every Vagabond character! without this all Vagabonds are represented by a grey or black racoon meeple (now only Thief and Ronin use these meeples). Exiles and Partisans: Adds a new deck which can be used instead of the base deck, which is generally considered to be better and more fun. Landmarks pack: Adds 4 new Landmarks (Forge, Treetop, Black Market and Lost City), which can be put on any map to add some importance to certain clearings. before this, the Pass and Ferry landmarks could only be used on their respective maps: now rules have been added to allow them to be used on any map, and their respective maps can even be played without them. Riverfolk Hirelings pack: Adds the Hirelings for the riverfolk expansion factions (Otters, Lizards) as well as a pink Hireling, not associated with any faction (Hedgehogs). Underworld Hirelings pack: Adds Hirelings for Underworld expansion (Moles, Corvids) as well as a pink Hireling, not associated with any faction (Deer). Marauders Hirelings pack: Adds Hirelings for the Marauders expansion (Rats, Badgers) as well as a pink Hireling, not associated with any faction (don't know the animal, but they're a band on one side and an acrobat on the other). There is a Hirelings box to store all the Hirelings, not sure how you get that retail? Might be with one of the 3 above, or maybe bought separately idk. Then finally there are cosmetics such as resin clearing markers, playmats for the 4 maps, and card sleeves. I think that's everything? If anyone who knows sees I missed something let me know.

Question: are the hirelings compatible with the clockwork factions? I thought the automated factions was the devs answer to low player count problem so I’m kinda confused about that

I originally thought this was the best "1st expansion to get" as well, but then I considered the fact that the hirelings cannot be played with the faction they are based on, so the options would be super limiting because you only have base 4 factions +2. However, if you don't care about the hirelings, 2 militant factions is awesome, and I will now always play with ADSET so I understand why you call this the best 1st. I think Underworld narrowly beats it out, but this is certainly a close second imo.

I think underworld is best because it adds 1 militant and 1 insurrection, along with another pair of boards.
