Internal gears generally have an input ratio limit, that if you exceed will invalidate your warranty and potentially damage it. You can always run larger gearing, and that's when the extra gears may have an advantage. If they were spaced similarly to the Speedhub gears, that would net you 2 more gears.
@iamiyo3 жыл бұрын

Rholoff already has more than enough range between 1st and 14th gear - at least for a solo bike. Shimano has a gearbox with two derailleur blocks mounted opposite and a chain linking them. The selector shifts the chain across the sprocket blocks.

Few years back i designed my own panniers for my racing bike, they are irregular in shape to cover as much space as possible, low gravity center, and i had a thin rear rack with a sliding mechanism, i slided some U shape parts with one channel on each side where a screw mounted on the pannier was sliding into. Today i changed the bike and rack and i'm trying to figure out a different mounting mechanism. Before this bags i was travelling with a backpack, it was horrible.

Bronze to stop it rusting? When everything else is steel? I would think that's for a much simpler reason, it stops cold welding when it's sliding between steel gears, same reason brass is used for synchros and dog rings in normal gearbox?

Wondering if a regular full 21 gear chain gearbox could be fit inside a box. I think the only thing necessary to modify would be to allow the front sprockets to move right and left on the axle to avoid having too much side-pressure on the chain due to the small distance between the front and back sprockets. And then just having a cardan to the wheel would be so nice when doing muddy terrain 😀

If there were two selectable chains on the second 'return' drive, this project would become a six-speed, much more useful. It would need to have a wide gap between ratios on the second stage, and the selector on the upper shaft. You might be interested in the race mountainbike built by Allen Millyard a few yeers ago and raced successfully by his son. It has a hub gear mounted above the bottom bracket, driven by an enclosed chain, and another chain inside the rear suspension arm (one arm, not a fork). It's all enclosed, and has very low unsprung weight, and allows easy removal of the wheel - not that this is going to be needed much, as tyre and tubes can be changed without removing the wheel. Also, Mike Burrows came up with a concept for an enclosed derailleur system for commuter bikes. It would have worked well, but no-one made the 3-pulley rear derailleur needed to make it functional

@pashakdescilly75173 жыл бұрын
The bicycle gearbox illustrated in the video lacks the ability to disengage the three internal reduction chains and lock the input shaft to the concentric output shaft. That would of course be direct drive. This is the classic gearbox layout used on most European and American classic bikes, and Harley Davidsons to the present day. The Zundapp K500 flat twin and K800 flat four motorcycles of the 1930s had a four speed chain drive gearbox and shaft final drive

@user-yv2cz8oj1k3 жыл бұрын
You tend to have a lot of power loss on a PVT, so in cars they only used them on larger engines. There is the enviolo rear hub that is PVT in a rear gear hub, and though slightly better it still suffers from more power loss than a planetary gear hub like the more popular Sturmey Archer, Shimano Alfine/Nexus, or Rohloff.

i wonder if something like this could allow a super high power middrive to have a long lasting gearbox...
@geemy96752 жыл бұрын
yeah several companies are working on it. nor necessarily "super high power'' but combining mid drive with a reliable gearbox would be great for MTB/touring. revonte one has interesting approach with eCVT design coming from the automotive world (hybrid eCVT like Toyota/ford...) and can make 2kW and 200Nm of torque. I don't think it's worth designing an engine with much more power than that. once you reach certain power, with the battery and controller to power it, a heavy duty chain, it becomes so heavy, hard to pedal and powerful that your own pedalling power is useless. if pedals are just a way to control the motor power, you might as well use a throttle, foot pegs, throw away the pedals, the gearing, and just use a much simpler and more reliable single speed mid motor like on the Sur Ron, and call it a motorcycle. a sur ron with pedals is stupid

I've spent a fair chunk of time on a Canfield Jedi and was pretty close to getting a Zerode G2 at one stage. If your bike works out to be somewhat similar to the 2022 Norco Range, you'd have a customer! On paper at least, the Range has my ideal suspension kinematics and geometry for the kind of terrain I like riding - the only thing missing is a gearbox. 😉

@@Cyclingabout Thanks very much. No, I'm sorry to say that it has gone no further. Basically I'd have to quit my job and go all-in on it, but the return on that investment is unlikely. DH has actually become a dwindling market. I'd love to redesign it for Enduro, and going to 9 or 12 gears. But the width goes up with the number of gears and the diameter goes up with the range, so to give viable ratios the whole thing becomes too big and heavy. There's also likely quite a bit of friction because of the rotating ring gears. I'm disappointed too, but trying to be realistic. Cheers.

Sure, you have the Nexus and Alfine hubs from Shimano, but they lack the low gearing which is required for touring or even commuting in hilly terrain. Something under 500€, with at least 7-8 gears and the ability to have really low gears (which again is not possible with the Nexus/Alfine hubs) would really make IMHO derrailleurs obsolete except for ambitious MTB and road cycling.
