On 2nd December 2023, an unusual giant dark hole appeared on the sun called a coronal hole. The sunspot and coronal holes are sources of high-speed solar wind. The recent coronal hole is so big that it can hold 60 Earths. The solar side where the giant hole emerged is pointing directly at Earth.
Why do coronal holes and sunspots appear on the sun, and how can they cause solar storms?
Coronal holes occur when the Sun's magnetic field unwraps a surface area, leading the material from the Sun's upper surface to flow away as the solar wind. The Coronal holes are sources of high-speed solar wind.
The appearance of the recent coronal hole on the Sun is not in line with typical solar activity. Apart from its size, the timing and location of this coronal hole do not align with usual solar activity.
Firstly, coronal holes typically manifest during solar minimum. Secondly, these holes are observed near the poles rather than at the equator. Solar activity spans an 11-year cycle, exhibiting variations in intensity, with periods of both high and low activity.
