So many ideas that I wouldn't have even thought of, Lulu is definitely one of a kind now!

Haha. She's always been one of a kind Tommo! I think she's standard enough still but has some tweaks that will definitely make sea faring a lot better.

Always good to see what you’re up to. Plenty going on and you’re making a very personalised lugger there.

Thank you for this video. About making the mast higher, on my coble, I just put a tube on top of the wooden mast (40 cm of the wood in the tube). It was part of a broken Laser mast and it is working very well.🙂
@SailingWithDaveАй бұрын
Hi Chis. Many thanks for that. So can I clarify, you made a type of "sleeve" where the metal extenion slides over the mast? That would be my first choice to be honest but I have the shrouds bracket at the top so it makes that difficult. Any ideas?

@@SailingWithDave I think you understood well. But I sent you a drawing, I hope it will clear.🙂

I wrapped three sides of the mizzen hole with light line to take the slop out of it. It's kinder to the spar than wood to wood contact. I still want to fill in the bottom recess and replace it with a hardwood socket with a drain hole.

Thats a great idea. I htink i will have a look in to that.

Batterie compartment, looking good, there... Wedging your sailing pole is smart! That crimping tool caught my attention though,... I'm very interested how that tool works now... Keep up the good work, Dave ! 👍
@SailingWithDaveАй бұрын
Cheers Marc. Yes that crimping tool seems to work well. You need to practise to get the n=hang of it and to get the eylets in tight but I think i'm good enough now to use it for stuff!

i think its a rivenut i bought one but never used it as yet
@SailingWithDaveАй бұрын
@@Spud63 Oh sorry, yes Rivnut. I thought I would give it a try. It is starts to spin round then I have to re-think but it was the only proper stainless steel option I had to replace the old rusty nut in there!!

Rivington or Tip Hat crimper...comes in varying 'M' sizes...having to change crimper spindle to match...but can be crimped into thin sheet metal to drilled out wood. Varying lengths and metal types.

@@davidmason5163 I've used these now on various things with great success. One problem that we may have on the biat is if it rusts like the older one. The old one I could at least spanner out, but this I will have to cut very very carefully but i'm sure it will be fine.

Pipe insulation and a tie wrap...as a temp buffer. 22:22
@SailingWithDaveАй бұрын
Yep, that would do it!! I wonder sometimes if I look for the complicated solutions!! I am also hoping that the new traveller system I install will stop the ring going to the end anyway.
@NiallWardropАй бұрын
@@SailingWithDave The traditional solution is a Turk's head knot, that said I've had nothing for 30+ years and it doesn't seem to be doing any harm, don't let the sail flog against it for extended periods. I've never felt the whole thing is precise enough to need controlled, but I suppose as long as I get where I'm going I'm not bothered.
@SailingWithDaveАй бұрын
@@NiallWardrop I just checked out the "Turks head knot" Very prettyand would be fun to make one of those. Yes I agree about not doing anything, it's not really an issue on the boat. When the Mizzen is in action and the sheet os tight it doesn't move anyway and there's no wear to be honest, but I like that knot!!!
@NiallWardropАй бұрын
@@SailingWithDave I meant on the ends of the sheet horse to stop the ring banging on the hull. But the same applies, it only really does it if the sail is allowed to flog.
@SailingWithDaveАй бұрын
@@NiallWardrop Sorry Niall, got that mixed up there!! I think i'm going to make some wooden covers when i get the time. Somone I saw with a Lugger did that and just glued them on. I could also velcro them on so they can be easily replaced...much more SWD!!!
@LNM00002 ай бұрын
Hi mate how are you going to get those wedges out when they get stuck ? (which will be when you need to take them out. In a hurry) When the mizzen is loaded with wind it's not going to be clonking about is it ? That rivnut has just rivved (is that a word..?) itself against the skin of the deck. Think they work best when grumbled up tight against a metal panel.... Not sure what the wooden cylinder was for but as you've alluded to, if it's thread sticks in the rivnut.... you're snookered 😮. Lovely stuff as always 😎
@SailingWithDaveАй бұрын
Well these are all the same questions I have. Only one way to find out! I'm definitely not strucj on the wedges to be honest. A lot of Lugger sailors use them but i'm not sure sure. The idea above from Niall is a better one. The wedges only stop the Mizen mast from moving about. The sail can still be let go if you need to in a rush and lifting out the mast should release the wedges to if needed as they push in the opposite way, but I htink the rope trick might be nicer!
@NiallWardropАй бұрын
@@LNM0000 Why would you need to unship the mizzen mast in a hurry? Release sheet, grab middle of bottom of sail, wrap round mast, sail tie, done.
