Dave - absolutely brilliant little video. Loads of info - helped me with my choice of drysuit. I went for the multi sport 4 2.0 currently £314 in marine superstore. All sizes in stock and managed to go into the store,so tried lots of different sizes on. Just need to get a fleece. Would you wear the thermal suit over your clothes. I normally wear tracksuit bottoms and sweatshirt but find that the sweatshirt rides up while I pull the suit up. Can’t wait to give mine a try. Thanks again for the video- happy sailing 😃
@SailingWithDaveКүн бұрын
Many thanks for that. So glad it helped. I haven't worn the inner fleece yet. Used it as a pillow a few times on the boat but thats it!! I've worn the suit once in the spring and then it was a bit too hot!! Hopefully when it gets a bit colder i'll give it a wear. One thing I noticed was that the neck is way too tight for me. Gives me a sore throat after about 2 hours so I need to trim the latex a bit.

Enormous waves? Click bait
@SailingWithDaveКүн бұрын
Waves, like sailing itself is extremely relative. None more so than to the experience you have. So, I think at the time, and with the experience I had, the size of the boat and the excitement levels I had simply sailing with another Mirror Dinghy all made up to the fact these were indeed enormous waves to me at that time. I've since sailed through 1.5M waves on the sea, in the Lugger and the first time I did that I thought I was going to die. I have since done it a few times without thinking too much about it, so it's all relative to the storyline of the channel and relative to the novice sailors its aimed at, so I hope that explains it a bit better. I get a bit excited, maybe a bit passionate at times but click bait...no, not very me!
@geoffreyfeacey210Күн бұрын
Dave thinks carefully. I had small cabin boat, nothing worse than being stuck in cabin in pouring rain I sold it and bought a Lugger again best thing I did, a fair weather.
@SailingWithDaveКүн бұрын
Ha, thats like the opposite of me. I do like the open boat of the Lugger, but I yearn for a cabin!!! I think for me, I want to get out in different weather and be able to get down under for sleeping etc when I need to. This boat isn't the next one, in fact I think I still need to stick to a proper smaller trailer sailer but one with a cabin!

@@SailingWithDave I'd love to learn how to sail in bad weather conditions. It would be really fun.
@SailingWithDaveКүн бұрын
@@Jono1982 Well there's plenty of that on the channel if you look for it!! I think learning to sail in bad conditions is really good for you but in order to do so, you can limit your losses. What I mean by that is I have sailed Lulu in 40+mph wind on Lake Bala, because there waves never get anywhere near large enough for that to be a hassle, there's no current or tide too. So this means you only have to worry about the wind! Sailing in high wind and also really no wind has taught me a lot about sailing. High wind as it gets the boat nearer her limits, you really get a feel for her and know where she'll go to. In low winds however, especially on lighter boats like the Mirror, it teaches you how to get the most of the wind. You have lots of time to play, tinker etc etc, its likt everything is slowed down. I wouldn't sail on the sea in half the conditions I do on the lake because a sustained F6/7 on the sea would bring large waves, and also probably some nasty overfalls in places around Anglesey!!!.

any chance you can share where to get the 3d printed hank locks? Thanks for the video
@SailingWithDaveКүн бұрын
Hi Mate. I made them myself. I have 2 versions. The red ones that are flat and clip over the hanks or the ones that a slightly larger and have a hole in them allowing for a jib downhaul to be used with the jib. I was going to get a little shop set up and charge like £10 for a set of them bit haven;t got round to that yet! Do you sail a Mirror? I have sent a few few packs out to various people over the past couple of years in exchange for some feedback on their usage but have literally never had anyone come back to me!!!

an idea for the cover fixing would be use studs with poppers inlay one part into the wood with epoxy then press the other bit onto it from the cover , easily removable cover
@SailingWithDave5 күн бұрын
Hi Spud. I did consider many ways of doing it but i'm not so sure that would work. I think the sea would get in under the press studs and would also pop them off too easily. I think along the top to secure the back t some kind of brace would work though.

Hi Joe. not too bad really. The furler was £90 which was the most expensive part, but I needed to replace the existing one, it's just jammed way too many times now. The blocks weren't bad at all. I can;t remember off hand. The cleated one was most expensive but both of them weren't too bad. I clip these to the boat when in use so I can take the blumming things off the boat though as someone said people will nick them if they see them!!!

sailing with Dave Chandlery lol yeah agree about the lugger mainsheet system i think most do a conventional dinghy setup
@SailingWithDave8 күн бұрын
Yes it has been a lot better with this system. A lot less twists and tangles to contend with and it clips on and off really nicely. Only 2 gripes have been the reduced thickness mainsheet (16mm to 14mm) is still a bit tight for the system. It seems to get stcuk under where the fairlead is screed into the top of the cleat. I wonder if you can get a higher one? I also need half the mainsheet now so I have been sailing with a coil of rope in the cockpi. I need to see what I need and get it cut down!!!

Thank you for this video. If you are fed up with varnishing, you could do as me : I'm only using "glaze". It's not so shiny but very easy to use. One quickly coat every year and the wood stay safe.🙂
@SailingWithDave9 күн бұрын
I never heard of "Glaze"!!! I will have a look into that!
@christophe60658 күн бұрын
@@SailingWithDave Glaze is the google translation for "lasure" in french. A sort of very very liquid varnish.
@SailingWithDave7 күн бұрын
@@christophe6065 Just been having a quick look at and indeed "Lasure" is a product. Infact it looks like the barnd "SikkenS" is a lasure and I know that fairly well. Much better than varnish as it leaves the pores open , and it soaks into the wood, rather than coats it. The issue with Varnish (Other than the 2500 coats needed when applied) is that it has to form a complete coating. One bash or crack and the whole thing is compromised. I have also seen wood thats getting moisture from somewhere else go funky underneat the varnish. I just don;t like the stuff really so will be definitely looking at some of this for Mochyn Dun next time round. Fortunately Lulu doesn;t have much wood and I teak what she has as its all hardwood Iroko.

@SailingWithDave9 күн бұрын
I'll look in to that. I think modern boats are more efficient and the Lugger's design is effectively flawed for going fast!! Shes heavy, under canvassed and an oldish design. Everything you need for a sfae boat, but she just needs a bit oif wind to get her going!

Hi Dave, Great video I'm looking to buy one myself, Unfortunately there are know outlets I can visit so have to buy online which I'm not a lover of, especially for clothing. How did you find the sizing chart and was it correct ? What are supposed to wear under these suites, which will have an effect on the size? lastly are the boots you wear? Hopefully you can point me in the right direction.
@SailingWithDave9 күн бұрын
Hi Gregory So where I bought mine from were happy to exchange the suit. I needed to change it twice, so I tried 3 suits on before getting the right fit. The Typhoon one had a lot of different sizes so it would fit tall and slim or short and "portly" etc. I ende dup having a slightly different sized inner fleece suit to the actual suit which was fine. You could buy 3 or 4 suits in one go, but of course would need the money, or at least credit card size, to do that! So that cost me about £30 in postage. I would have spent the same or perhaps even more in fuel driving off to somewhere that custom makes them or going to the actual shop which all seem to be on the south coast here in the UK!!! I bought the "Teddy suit" but you can wear anything inside. Thats the beauty of dry suits. I suspect I would be wearing shorts and t-shirt most of the time until the winter. The last time I wore one was on a Rib at the end of Novemeber and I wore Jogging bottoms, tshirt/thin jumpoer and used my neoprene shoes that were much warmer as I was able to warm up the water inside them.
