Coast Guard 41's had 2 VT903 Cummins Diesels, one drove a PTO (when needed) and the Stbd Prop (If memory serves). I drove the boat, but that engine was facinating and I drew out much of the cooling and fuel distribution in the hopes of getting certified on that engine. I have heard of it running away, but never happened to anyone I knew. Your videos are facinating, nostalgic, and funny without even trying, keep it up.

This boat was owned by one of the partners in the Castoldi UK importation business. He also had a company running pleasure trips from Littlehampton. I think there were (at least) two similar boats back in the 80's. That looks like an 06 unit, so it has a front gearbox with a dog clutch to engage/disengage the engine. The hydraulics for steering and reverse bucket should be powered from a pump in the gearbox, so the entire unit is self-contained from the engine.

Hull looks to be a Classic 27, which dates from the early 1970s, continuing to be produced into the mid 00s. If so, it's a really nice handling and performing hull. With a big turbo diesel on a jet, it's got the makings of a great boat. You want to crack an injector union open to see if it's getting fuel in the first instance.

Bloody shame that engine got left to rot, they were pretty good motors, I had a pair in my charter catamaran. Sabre engines from Wimborne, Dorset were originally making a marine version of Ford truck engines and then changed to doing the same with Perkins. They were taken over by Caterpillar in 1998 and at one time half the production line came out in Cat yellow and the rest in Perkins blue, spares should be readily available.

Love the boat! I've always wanted a jet boat to go in shallow water up the River Severn. Jets are much safer than props but not quite as efficient so they haven't caught on. Don't ell my wife but I'd love to buy it ! I have two electric boats so I allowed one 'dirty diesel'! The water cooled exhaust would sound great.

We live about 12 miles from Littlehampton, I remember that boat doing trips out on the sea for visitors to Littlehampton. It used to go like stink out on the sea, and easily coped with the extreme tidal flow in the river Arun to get into its mooring for more trippers. I thought it must have been scrapped years ago.

Hamilton Jet. excellent system! very good for shallow water also! Perkins engines also very good for marine! VERY bad idea to start marine engines dry! it tears up the impeller very quickly as most are rubber impellers. generally, the bilge pump will automatically switch off as they are commonly set using a float switch. If at all possible, keep that Perkins! It is a GEM! I have known these engines to be sunk for a week, fuel system cleaned and start up right away. Marine steering is commonly TELEFLEX system. a geared cable system. sadly, That Gareth needs 'OUT' if it was underwater, it woud probrably have been OK. But being in damp air has been the worst situation. Maybe bypass? or try a Truck turbo?

I used to Drive this boat along with a guy called Mark Racine. Back in the 90 through to 2000s my favourite they were owned by a Chris Johnson. They stopped running due to all the politics within the Harbour. We had 2 boats Miss Littlehampton and Fury which was a slightly smaller design. It is a Perkins turbo and I think a Casdoli jet? Which is could stop and turn on a dime. Littlehampton Harbour has very shallow water at high tide but we could run safely in 18inch of water once on the plane. She socks up stones at 12 inches which is quite loud!

Well that's a damn shame it was sitting in too much water for too long but that's a nice big Perkins like a 300 horse at least 300 and a nice big jet I'm sure that boat if you can get it to run will be fun because it has a big jet on the back you should be able to do 30 mph easily. Most important thing drain the bilge dry and keep it dry that's what happens when you have a hatch that's open to the elements it always fills up for damn water because you left the plug in and you have a dead battery and the the bilge pump is not pumping the water out of the boat. But on the good side you know diesels you'll get it running

@chriscorrigan7420 Жыл бұрын
With the boat. If yo that you use marine exhaust manifolds and if you are going to use it in salt water the manifolds need to be cast Iron also put riser's on them as well. They will prevent or help prevent water rushing back up the exhaust pipes if you stop or stall quickly. Normally jet units have baffles that fold down behind the nozzle which will give you neutral and reverse. I haven't seen that type of coupling on a jet but I'm guessing it would be a reduction box of some sort. Salt water will destroy any engine quickly if you don't prepare it for the conditions like the Perkins has been. Also a closed cooling system would also be advisable.
