A once healthy and happy child who suddenly fell into the depths of depression and attempted suicide... Josh Crickmay’s story could have ended quite differently were it not for the unique and life-altering intervention of his parents, Kathy and Andrew. When their son - just 15 - became violent and endured bouts of severe depression, eventually dropping out of school, they sought medical help. After a year filled with hospital visits, Josh was diagnosed with high-functioning autism, a condition on the spectrum that affects the ability to communicate and socialise. The diagnosis was the turning point for Kathy and Andrew who decided that saving their only child meant taking drastic steps as a family. They quit their jobs to take him on a “Birding Big Year”: 365 days to spot and document 1000 species of birds. And so began a year of adventure that would eventually save Josh and provide him with much-needed purpose.

Massive respect to these loving parents...and let's also acknowledge that having the means to undertake that quest played a huge part in this great story! Make money guys...and a lot of it but stay human, affectionate and loving souls!!

Wow, what great parents!! They should write about their perspective. Many parents face this same situation.

Brilliant... Just shows that conventional school isn't the be all and end all of a child's education. Our son hated school with a passion. He was diagnosed with ADHD. These kids need other input! They are intelligent, but show it differently. He's now a police officer.

@@anton_roos what makes you assume I am with the ANC? The land question actually has nothing to do with the anc. Black African stays in shack my friend.

@@tonymudau3005 black africans don't have to stay in shacks my friend. competent, pro-economy non-corrupt governments fixed countries like singapore, korea, vietnam, poland in less than 30 years. unfortunately, you will not be voting for such a government right?
@tonymudau3005

@@lm_b5080 I completely agree with you on this one. Definitely not a pro-anc .. I'm just saying some problems are structural. Maybe if we had more people with capacity (land, capital maybe) we wouldn't be so reliant on government and have more to export which is the main goal.
