Great vlog Mike, thanks for sharing. Some great views of the cranes there, we get them up here on the Cambridge fens, but they’re very people aware & you can’t get anywhere near them. The Jackdaws sure were persistent with the LRP eggs too! Subscribed to your channel & look forward to having a view of your uploads. Best, Nick

Oh, I did not know the crane was so rare in Britain 😲 They are very common here in Sweden, I have at least two pairs just around the farm every year. They can't scare the living shit out of you when they come flying low over the tree tops, they make a extremely high scream the second they see you 😅

Thanks Mike, what a wonderful sequence with the jackdaw and ringed plovers! I find it really moving to see the way they protect their nest. And, yes you’re right, it makes it a great deal more interesting to watch in slow motion.

Clever idea with the cage. Great footage of the jackdaws chasing the plovers with their broken wing display and also the Eurasian cranes. Pity about the leg rings on the Eurasian cranes though.

Very nice video. I have the cranes in my neighborhood, but onl place I can get good photos is from a hill so I look down at them. With 600 mm its not too bad, they are out on an island about 200 m off, occasionally I can get them closer.

Hi Mike, what are your thoughts now on the OM1 and the 150-400 lens. After your last comments on them I assumed they were were to be your equipment of choice. Will you be running both groups in tandem or waiting to sell one set. I am a OM1 and 150-400 user which I personally find wonderful. I must admit I was looking forward to ideas and inspiration coming forth from your excellent videos. Regards Roger.

I have sold the Sony gear, but have lots of video and stills taken with it still to show. Very happy with the Om-1 and 150-400mm.

Do you know if Slimbridge ever try to control Jackdaw numbers? Controversial, I know but, there are currently 1.4m breeding pairs of Jackdaw in the uk vs circa 5000 pairs of Ringed Plover. Surely, a few less Corvids in an area known to attract a relatively rare bird isn’t a bad thing? Really interesting video Mike, thanks for posting.
@OldSkoolWax2 жыл бұрын
corvids on the whole are not a problem for breeding birds. We are the problem.

I do not know Slimbridge's policy, but it is unlikely that they do.

I've photographed the killdeer (ringed plover) doing their crippled wing routine several times. A great many of them hatch around the five-acre pond in our local park, though it's a miracle that any of them do. These birds will drop their eggs just anywhere without any attempt at building a nest to protect them. I'm sure a lot of them get stepped on by park visitors or crushed by park maintenance mowing machines. They are difficult to photograph in flight but I have made a few good pictures of them. Mostly luck, I suppose. :)

Why would the plovers risk injuries, though, if the eggs are pretty much safe anyway?🐣

We use the term "bird brain" for someone who is not very smart. Birds can't think things through.

@@MikeLaneFRPS I always thought that's just a harmful stereotype but then again plovers aren't corvids :)

Wow! I didn't know little ringed plovers are such tremendous actors and actresses; much better acting potential than many hollywood specimen.😂 Mike, as my BF mentor of choice, could you please hint me to the right direction? I know for a fact you've shot both systems for years. I have a budget (well not really but if I strain myself... but that's a different story) for either: Canon 90D + Sigma 150-600 Contemporary or Sony A6100(6400) + Tamron 150-500 (or if I really push it, Sigma 150-600 DG DN for e-mount). Which of the two is the better choice for BF and especially fast action? From what I've researched the biggest reason to go for the 1st combo would be the price savings but that's pretty much it. Is the Canon's 45 AF points (all cross type with the middle one being dual-cross) system any good for BIF (Sony has 425 phase detect points + 425 contrast detect)? I would expect the Sony to have much much higher keeper rate. Please help. Thank you so much in advance. Best regards from Poland of all places!

@@richardfink7666 Are you sure we're talking about the same camera and not e.g. EOS R6? Cos every single review I've seen points out how fast and accurate mirrorless AF systems are compared to (especially low and mid-range like 90D) DSLRs. They pick up the target instantly and stay glued to it no matter what.
