Agreed. Facebook became a hotbed of hate, trolls and power struggles, so I stopped using it. I'm still on YT but that's about it.
@Nick-B783 ай бұрын
True moderators AREN’T the nasty ones but usually the people operating as or even just tagged as ‘moderators’ are actually just normal people who partake in the group or forum or whatever and obviously have some sort of bias. This is what ultimately turns each group/forum (and then later the entire platform in some cases) into echo chambers. A true moderator would be someone who is totally unbiased towards either side of a topic and should apply the rules of the forum as well as the general rules of decency without hesitation. Obviously AI would make a fantastic moderator once it’s smart enough to be able to.
@Nick-B783 ай бұрын
19:27 I agree these guys should be paid more however I’d like to check if the figures being quoted in the comparison are actually equalised for economic disparity? No idea if that’s the right term but I mean like how people living in a big city might be paid more to do the same job as someone in a small town but then the cost of living in the city is so much more that you have to factor that in when trying to compare salaries.

Brilliant work, Hannah! I’ve always been captivated by your ability to uncover the science and technology shaping our world. One area I’d love for you to explore is the venture capital (VC) industry in Africa, particularly in West Africa. There are so many brilliant innovators and ideas here, but access to capital remains a challenge. A documentary on how this could unlock potential for sustainable businesses and job creation would be truly eye-opening. As a software engineer based in Accra, Ghana, I see firsthand how impactful this could be. Keep up the amazing work!

That is a very naive way of looking at the internet these days. While they "can" create these opportunities, it doesn't mean they will or that these will get taken over by western conglomerates and run into the ground or penny pinch them for predatory subscriptions. The internet is reshaping communities across Africa, and Pipeline in Nairobi is a perfect example of this digital revolution. With affordable data and smartphones, even densely populated areas are experiencing a surge in e-commerce, remote jobs, and online education. It’s incredible how Nairobi is leading this transformation as the 'Silicon Savannah,' becoming a major tech hub in Africa. Our fintech sector is booming, especially with mobile money services like M-Pesa, which have set a global standard for financial inclusion a service even the US is still catching up to. The internet is unlocking opportunities for entrepreneurs, creatives, and tech innovators across the continent, and as access grows, Africa's digital future looks brighter than ever!
@corail53Ай бұрын
E-commerce = the death of local commerce. remote jobs - they are getting shafted because western companies only hire them because they are "cheaper than hiring in the west = exploitation". Online education that is hard to vette but will give you that one. Fintech = middleman companies that do nothing but take fees from you while also not being insured properly in most cases. Digital companies are generally propped up by lenders - they seldom turn profits and are basically zombies. This increase the wealth inequality by a huge sum.

Hannah, It’s time we rethink how we classify regions like Africa as ‘developing.’ This term is not only archaic but also misleading. In many ways, Africa is more technologically agile than many ‘developed’ regions, primarily because it isn’t burdened by outdated legacy systems. This allows for a more rapid adoption and integration of modern technologies across various sectors. Let’s acknowledge these advancements rather than confining the continent to outdated categories.
