Meanwhile, I work at the college across the street from the venue of this year's Milwaukee RNC. So our college campus is closed downtown that week, making classes go "online/hybrid" or forcing students to drive to either Oak Creek or Mequon ( ok, city buses go to Oak Creek but not Mequon) and our college Public Safety is waiting for the Secret Service to approve 103 essential personnel for the college. So far about 23 have been approved, including 20 who work for Milwaukee PBS, which is housed in our campus buildings. Yeah thanks a lot, T-Rump, for ripping on our city. When the DNC was here, the Secret Service employees were all veterans, but their folks now for this event are all newbies. I will gladly be far far away during RNC and working at my normal campus.

​@@CopingwithGrattitude it can be difficult to understand and tbh I understand it theoretically but I don't GET it, if that makes sense. getting diplomas is not the same thing as learning or developing critical thinking skills, unfortunately. and education by itself isn't always enough to overcome the power of emotion. there are a lot of people who feel very weak and need someone or something to blame for their perceived problems as well as their real problems, and racist, anti-immigrant, anti-queer rhetoric provides very easy targets. the people who flock to Trump are terrified and angry, and the problem is that it is hard to reach people through their fear and anger. Trump supporters are flat out racist, for example. because they as white people don't have the same power they used to, they view people of color as a threat to their existence. my partner, who is white and from North Carolina, explained the problem with white southern Trump voters to me like this -- white southerners have never developed culture of their own. their entire identity since their ancestors arrived as colonizers has been defined by their subjugation of black people. even if you were a poor white person, you could still cling to the fact you were white and therefore still better than black people. white southerners don't have a culture of their own outside of systemic racism. so of course when people work on dismantling systemic racism, these white southerners view it as a personal attack, as an attempt to wipe them out because they are nothing without their racist rhetoric and systemic racism. they have never tried to be something beyond it. it's really sad, actually, and it's sadder how people will turn their fear into hate instead of summoning the courage to face their fear head on and grapple with the actual problem.

I think it's the unfortunate result of people finally being held accountable for racist systems of power. they're afraid because they have very little identity outside of their relationship to marginalized groups (i.e., they only know themselves as not-black, not-Asian, not-queer, etc) so if marginalization is dismantled, they fear they are nobody. nobody with a healthy sense of self and identity reacts with violence and hatred to marginalized groups, after all, because there's no rational reason to feel threatened by them. just because one group is gaining more acceptance and power doesn't mean anyone else is losing power. it's not a zero sum game. I say all this as someone who was raised in a conservative Christian environment and it fucked me up really badly. so I understand why they feel that way. I used to lean so heavily on faith because it gave me purpose, I didn't have to think, I just had to listen, and if I obeyed, then I was a good person who deserved good things. the same goes for people stuck in these hateful mindsets. as long as they're not X or Y, they can believe themselves to be good people.
