I hope you’re having a great day or a nice night too! I’m having tomatoes and cucumbers from the garden, with homegrown garlic spread on cheese toast. I had so many tiny heads of garlic I wrap about 10 heads in foil, with a little bit of coconut oil and bake them until they mush out when you squeeze them. 🧄🤌 I hope your garden is thriving! The hurricane brought some much needed rain, but now all of the tomatoes are splitting, but I shouldn’t have to water for a couple days. And I made sure to pick everything that was ready before the rain started. I’ve been cleaning/rearranging the basement and I think I went at it a little too hard. So I’m going to spend some quality time laying on my heating pad and watching KZbin. I hope you find some time to relax too!
@makingendsmeet3 ай бұрын
Hey Christine! Thanks my friend😊💕 Ooh yum! Your roasted garlic spread sounds delicious😋 It's nice to not worry about watering the garden when it rains, isn't it? Are you planning on canning or dehydrating some of those tomatoes? I've still got to get out in the garden and weed and replant things for summer. Taking a break with some KZbin sounds like the perfect way to unwind after all your hard work, take it easy!

@@makingendsmeet I have been freezing them mostly this year. I blended and strained some for juice. I did make 3 jars of fridge pickle okra. I’m not sure how they’ll be yet. I always water bath can them, so if I don’t like the consistency, I guess I could still boil them to soften. We’ll see. I was wondering, are the animals much of a nuisance? I have deer, which can devastate a garden in one night. Then I have squirrels who took about 1/2 my tomatoes last year. I’ve been spreading the cat litter box around the perimeter every now and then, so I haven’t had rabbits since the first year, but they are little munchers too. Even the house sparrows ate my pea plant leaves down to sticks. I had to cover them with bird netting. Even the mailman was disrespectful of the garden. I had to put a fence up, so he wouldn’t trample my flowers. He’d been taking a shortcut through the yard, but had to jump down off a 3ft wall onto my driveway. I didn’t want him breaking an ankle either. But I know you have vastly different animals there. Besides your fence, do you have to protect anything? And the bugs. Oof! My struggles have mostly been with squash bugs, vine borers, and an orange beetle that eats the squash leaves. And the brassicas have cabbage moth and harlequin beetles. I’m trying squash this fall and there are less bugs and very early in the spring till about June, I can grow brassicas, but then I either have to dust them like crazy or rip them out. So I’m just curious about your garden pest situation.
@makingendsmeet2 ай бұрын
@Gardeningchristine Awesome, that'll be handy to have some tomatoes in the freezer to use during winter or whenever you need. Pickled okra sounds interesting. You'll have to let me know how they turn out. We're pretty fortunate where we are with critters. There is sometimes hares (in a dry season, when there's no grass much) that will eat leafy greens in the garden, but now that we made a proper fence around the garden that hasn't been a problem. Sometimes there's the occasional possum or bush rat that will eat things like tomatoes too (but the fence seems to again be helping there). And sometimes there is a cheeky crow, cockatoo or king parrot that likes to help themselves to some tomatoes as well. I have had problems in the past with aphids in the veggie patch, but I think at the time the poor soil quality had a fair bit to do with that. Oh and we get flying foxes (fruit bats) in summer that just love to eat our mangoes too! I think that's most of the pests! We're really lucky and don't have to contend with animals like deer thankfully. You definitely have a bit of competition going on for your veggies!
@Gardeningchristine2 ай бұрын
@@makingendsmeet Pickled okra is my favorite way to eat it. It’s pretty expensive in the store, so it’s good to grow it. And I haven’t done the litter trick in a couple weeks, and yesterday I saw a little rabbit, twice. Not sure if it’s the same bunny, or two of them, but since it’s the end of the season, and I don’t have any greens to worry about, I might let it stay. It’ll give the cats some entertainment to watch.

The broccolini looks great! I like brussel sprouts too, esecially in the oven baked with olive oil, without or without bacon. I bought a bag of vegetables that were in a "use now" bag yesterday so we had some lovely avocado that was just ripe today and we are going to eat cucumbers like crazy since we now have several... But we all like cucumbers so it is no chore. Hope you are doing fine there in Australia. We are having lovely September weather here, sunny and some days even quite sunny and warm. Well, for the season, but it can get to 20C mid day still and that is quite warm for the season. It only made it to about 16 today though. It will get so much colder in just a month or two we will make the most of it.

Good to see you have a few different things to enjoy, never seen blueberries that big before, they are less than half the size here. Have you thought about doing a vegetarian fajita with flatbread, you have courgettes, mushrooms, onion and the avocado would go well, I've also seen people shred sprouts to use as a slaw. Enjoy the grapes and doughnuts. X

Hey Al😊💕 Thanks, yes those blueberries were huge lol! The biggest I've ever seen, they're not usually that large here too! Veggie fajitas sounds delicious, thanks for the idea. I did use some of the flat breads as wraps, with scrambled eggs and silverbeet from the garden fried up as the filling but that would be tasty to use the the rest I put in the freezer like that. And that's smart to turn the Brussel sprouts into slaw too - they are like little mini cabbages after all! The grapes and doughnuts were so nice to get and have been very much appreciated😋

You can make burritos, soft tacos, cheese quesadillas , breakfast wraps , you get them a bit crispy crunchy put a little butter add jam or cinnamon sugar or honey and you have dessert . I loved the veggies you got . I’ve never had pumpkin or the dark fruit that was almost ready to eat because it had started to split and peel . Don’t laugh when we eat brussel sprouts we put mustard on them , also with cabbage. Have a wonderful day ! BTW were all those kangaroo 🦘🦘🦘🦘🦘 in your yard ?
