I read "Man's search for meaning" in two weeks after watching the movie "The Pianist", wrote a review and some notes for myself, spent some time reading about the Holocaust and will read it again next year. This book remains the greatest influence this year on me as it made me realise that in our hardest time, we humans can have such incredible strengths to overcome difficulties and succeed in finding the meaning of life. The book and its success in describing the pure acknowledgment of the reality in the camps urged me to talk about it, to write about it and to share it.

John, may i suggest some some books i think you might enjoy because you'll learn great things : "What doesn't kill us (Scott Carney)" "Teach like a pirate" (Dave Burgess), "Deep Work" (Cal Newport), "the 7 habits of highly effective people" (Stephen Covey). If you like memoirs, you might like "Total Recall" (Arnold Schwarzenegger), and as you like a bit of philosophy, i would suggest also "thoughts for myself" (Marc Aurelius, the roman emperor) Thank you for your list, i'll buy some more books now haha :D

Hey John you should read The Dragon of Eden by Carl Sagan, it gets a little bit too technical in some chapters but it is very interesting, it shows you how most humans think they are superior to other animals but how much we resemble to them. Because of you, I read “Man’s search for meaning” over the past week; and it has significantly changed me. The suffering that those people went through is astronomical and makes all of my own struggles laughable. Because of this book, I go out into the world now and see just how fucking good I have it. The lessons in that book are truly incredible and emotionally impactful. After finishing this book, I feel so happy just to have the relationships and good health that I now don’t feel I deserve. I’ve always been inspired to help others around me feel better, but this just makes it that much easier for me to keep the right mindset going. I’ve already had a much easier time connecting with people and cheering them up wherever I go, and I owe it to this book, and of course you. Keep creating ripples man; from my personal experience, I know a video like this has the power to change infinite lives in the future! Thank you 🙏☺️

Hey John, focus on quality, not quantity. One book a week is too much. Do not be just a fast consumer. Some books, like the one from Frankl, need to be read and 'digested' slowly. You also need to get back to them more times and re-read some parts to really understand them. Also, given your age, you may find some part more relevant than others but as you mature and grow, other parts, ideas may appeal too you more. The opposite goes for the books you find 'shallow', boring...Do not feel like you have to read/ listen to them till the end. Wish you insipring reading!
@katie-ty1mn5 жыл бұрын
Johan Hoon to be fair, since many of the books are self-help or nonfiction, i think they can be read faster. if you’re going to read james joyce, for example, that requires much more mental effort to read and understand. (plus all self help/motivational books are lowkey the same lmao) but i totally agree about the quality over quantity!!

Hey John ! I think the idea of reading a book/week is great, in a sense, but what for? What's the idea behind? Hitting the number? Is it about learning or about a numerical challenge ? And do you target books of a certain size or a category to achieve this goal ? Because I think there are some books you cant read in a week, even if you wanted to, even if you were a super fast reader, especially if you're studying/working. Some books that are big in size and in content, profound or/and complex need time to grasp, and to reflect upon, to take notes.. sometimes it's also beneficial to read, stop, exchange with someone about an idea, take notes, and then go back to reading..this is, for me, the main idea behind reading, its main purpose..sometimes you learn more if you exchange about a book and reflect upon it than when you only focus on finishing the book..sometimes you learn more from reading one book in a month or half a month than when you do every week..Im not saying you're not doing all this, Im just saying this should not be solely about numbers.. Those were some ideas I had while watching your inspiring and great video as usual. Im a follower from Morocco and let me tell you're doing a great job ! So keep it up !

I tried this habit few years ago, with sci-fi/noir, thriller and few psychological books from Doctor Wayne Dyer. The most important thing that I have learned is : 99% of cases, too much time waisted on the so called "inspirational" books. with the exception of "Your erroneous zones" and now "Flow". I learned so much from Asimov's books and stories that you cannot immagine. As well as for Bradbury and Dick. According to me, what change life is that you started this process and at the end of it you will be a better man, but simply because of the commitment that it takes, not for all the stupid things that are written on those books.

Still in the middle of the video and so far I love it! I just wanted to add my very basic two cents about Richard Bach's book. While I understand your point, what I got from Jonathan Livingston Seagull (it's so weird to write that, the name is very different in portuguese haha) was not to give up on your dreams. Despite the assumptions made by others/society/family/tradition of what you can or should be doing; of who you are and how you should be. Maybe that's just the kid's version of the book, but I really got a sense of hope, persistence and passion (to follow your dreams) from it. As in, yes, you are a seagull, but you can fly low, you can reach the skies, you can twirl. You fight for your dream, you never give up, and your legacy - if there is one - is a new outlook on "human"/seagull capability. What was once impossible, like flying to the moon, was now possible. This is why I loved the book so much. Please note that this comment is in no way trying to combate your opinion. Books are there to offer the reader their own subjective reading. I just felt like sharing. Thank YOU for sharing your thoughts and growth. I appreciate learning from and with you.

How you choose the books you read? You are very motivational

Since I saw John's first video about reading a book a week, I decided to try it out, read 8 so far, so this is how I did it (even though its not that much) read one book from a writer, if you like it, you will find other books from that author you'll like. I also took recommendations from other people, including influencers, friends, or people I talk to on IG haha. Audible and amazon(i think) give you recommendations after you read one book, so you'll find well rated books from the same category just by looking for one. I hope that helps :) I really recommend if you are into the IT and social media world, "hatching twitter".

one question ! how do you afford a book a week ? Edit: Thanks for all the ideas I will try this challenge too
@lonniedraus24496 жыл бұрын
OM already used books maybe? I can Imagine that regarding the looks of e.g. flow, that he buys used and therefore cheaper books... So like around 5-8€ and ordering them at the same time can save shipping so 6,5€ × 50= 325€. And also borrow and buy from Friends and local events where they also sell used books? (Dont know if this is common in the US)

I've many times heard that smart (or something along those lines) people remember the ideas while less smart would remember the events and the least would remember names. Its supposed to be an ethics lesson type of thing about how we should focus on the real meaning behind things instead of gossipping about people but maybe its the same logic?
@drasticgamerstv10256 жыл бұрын
may be the names in the story aren't from ur native language or they aren't popular names ..if not idk

When I read books,I mostly remember about the story,the lessons and the story behind each characters.But the date,the name of the place and the characters’ name i most likely to forget EXCEPT the main character name Btw,books doesnt rlly improve my language but it does improve on how I think,general knowledge and the changes of myself as a person so sorry if my english is bad(english is my 2nd language.Malay is my 1st language)

when a movie or series is made out of a book , if it is well made then i got no beef with it but mostly the enjoyment and the involvement which the book gives u will always surpass the movie ....but an advantage of movies is that they have music ...i love good bgm .......read the sea wolf by jack london you will love it

@sp2776 жыл бұрын
Maybe 8 books a year is a very good goal. Not many people read even three books in a year :D The important thing is not the number of books but enjoy them learn from them and having a good time.
@Garentei6 жыл бұрын
sp277 I think it also matters what kind of books you read. A lended book you *have* to read will take more time because it's probably not as interesting to you as a book you actually chose. Heh.
@seanwebb6056 жыл бұрын
Thomas Yorkshire IV I get distracted to. Sometimes a book references a source and I spend an hour looking it up and reading summaries of the source material. Which adds to my reading list. Suddenly I’m reading three or four books on a similar topic.
